Akkala Region Guide — Northeast Hyrule

Akkala is TotK's northeastern region — a rugged highland connecting Eldin's lava fields to the Lanayru Sea. It holds some of the game's most valuable farming spots, a cluster of powerful enemy camps, Akkala Citadel ruins with rare gear, and the Ancient Tech Lab. This guide covers every major location and secret.

Region Overview

How to reach Akkala:

  • North from Eldin Canyon
  • East from Lanayru Wetlands
  • Tower: Akkala Citadel Tower (climbs the citadel ruin structure)

Climate: Temperate to cold at higher elevations. No special weather gear required for most of the region except the snowfield border.

Character: Military ruin aesthetic — Akkala was a fortress region. Enemy camps are strong here (Black Bokoblins, Lizalfos clusters).

Akkala Citadel

Location: Central Akkala, elevated plateau

What it is: Ruins of the former Hyrulean military fortress. Partially destroyed in the Great Calamity (BotW era), further damaged by the Upheaval.

Tower: Akkala Citadel Tower is inside the citadel structure — climb the outer walls, find the internal structure, and activate the tower from the summit.

Enemy presence:

  • Multiple Black Bokoblin camps on the citadel walls
  • Boss Bokoblin on the main platform
  • Lizalfos on the lower approach routes

Citadel chests:

  • Royal weapons scattered through the citadel corridors
  • Zonai materials in structural alcoves
  • Amber and Ruby deposits in the walls

Best approach for clearing:

  • Enter from the south face (fewer enemies on initial approach)
  • Sneak to the top level first — clear the Boss Bokoblin on the summit
  • Then clear downward floor by floor

Akkala Ancient Tech Lab

Location: Northeast tip of Akkala, overlooking the sea

NPC: Robbie (the researcher from BotW) — now studying Upheaval effects on ancient technology

Services:

  • Compendium picture upload (if you missed photographing items)
  • Research notes on Zonai devices (lore)
  • Camera and Sensor+ upgrade path starts here (in BotW; in TotK some of this moved to Lookout Landing)

Nearby chest: Behind the lab building, a chest containing a Zonai device or materials — easily missed.

Farming Spots

Akkala Citadel Enemy Farm

Enemy types: Black Bokoblin, Blue/Black Lizalfos Resets: Every Blood Moon

Farm loop:

  1. Clear all Citadel enemies (15–20 enemies total)
  2. Collect all weapons + drops
  3. Blood Moon reset → repeat

Drop value: Black Bokoblin Guts rate is high here. Best Guts-per-hour farm outside the Floating Colosseum.

Akkala Ore Deposits

Dense gem deposit clusters on the citadel walls and northeast cliffs:

  • Ruby: Most common in Akkala (lava-adjacent zones)
  • Topaz: Northeast cliff faces near the sea
  • Opal: Cave systems around the citadel base

Mining tip: Use low-durability weapons from camp enemies to mine deposits. Break them on rocks before mining to preserve combat weapons.

East Akkala Sea Chest Islands

Small islands in the Akkala Sea east of the citadel:

  • Reachable by hoverbike or boat
  • 2–3 chests on different islands
  • Contain rare bows and materials not easy to find elsewhere

Shrines

| Shrine | Location | Puzzle Type | |--------|---------|-------------| | Rasitakiwak Shrine | Akkala Highland plateau | Combat trial | | Upland Zorana Skyview Tower area shrine | Northeast | Construction | | Akkala Ancient Tech Lab adjacent shrine | Northeast tip | Exploration |

Shrine cluster: Akkala has 4–6 shrines clustered in the central and eastern areas. Worth doing all before moving to adjacent regions.

Hidden Locations

Skull Lake

Location: Akkala Depths adjacent, northern Akkala

Skull Lake is a lake shaped like a skull (visible from the map). The Depths section beneath it has:

  • Large Zonaite deposits
  • A Lightroot near the center
  • A Forge Construct for Zonaite exchange

Access: Drop into the chasm on the northwest edge of Skull Lake → reach the Depths section directly below.

East Akkala Sea Depths

The Depths beneath the Akkala Sea contains significant Zonaite ore:

  • Navigate east from Akkala Depths
  • Multiple large Zonaite clusters along the underwater floor
  • Forge Construct in the Depths equivalent of the sea floor

Secret Cave: Akkala Cave of Shadows

One large cave system in Akkala contains multiple Bubbulfrogs — worth a dedicated exploration run before checking the Koltin exchange.

Akkala as a Hub Region

Akkala is well-positioned for players who:

  • Need Black Bokoblin Guts (best in Akkala)
  • Want a Ruby/Topaz farming loop (mine → sell for rupees)
  • Are completing the northeast shrine cluster
  • Need to visit Robbie at the Ancient Tech Lab

Route suggestion: Akkala Citadel (farm + Tower) → Ancient Tech Lab (Robbie) → East Sea Chest Islands (hoverbike) → Skull Lake Depths drop → return to citadel via fast travel.

Quick Tips

  • Akkala Citadel Tower is inside the citadel — unlike most towers that are stand-alone structures, the Akkala tower is embedded in the citadel ruin. Climb the ruin walls, not the surrounding cliffs, to reach the tower top.
  • Black Bokoblin Guts farm — if you're building high-value elixirs and need Guts, Akkala Citadel is the most reliable Black Bokoblin farm in the game. Blood Moon reset → clear → Blood Moon reset → clear. One of the best loops.
  • Sea islands by hoverbike — the chest islands in the Akkala Sea look impossible to reach without a boat but a hoverbike makes them trivial. Set course from the citadel east → touch down on each island → collect.
  • Robbie is worth visiting — even if you've already upgraded your Camera, Robbie's research notes unlock some Hyrule Compendium entries you may have missed. Visit him before maxing out the Compendium.
  • Ruby farming beats ore farming in Eldin — Akkala's Ruby deposits are more accessible than Eldin's (no heat gear required). If selling gems for rupees, Akkala is a better sustained farm than the volcano area.
