Complete Cooking Guide — Best Recipes & Effects

Cooking is the core survival and combat system of Tears of the Kingdom. The right meal before a boss fight or difficult traverse can be the difference between a flawless run and a game over. This guide covers the most effective recipes for every situation.

Cooking Basics

How to cook:

  1. Find a cooking pot (campfire with a pot hanging over it)
  2. Open your inventory and hold up to 5 ingredients
  3. Select "Cook" — all held items combine into a meal

Key rules:

  • Ingredients with the same effect stack — more of the same ingredient = longer duration or higher potency
  • Mixing different effects cancels them out — produces a generic Dubious Food
  • Monster Parts added to dishes create elixirs (not food) — monster parts + critters = elixir
  • Fairy Tonic is cooked with a fairy and any food item — strong healing output

Cooking Pots — Best Locations

| Location | Pot Notes | |----------|-----------| | Lookout Landing | Always-available pot outside Link's room | | Kakariko Village | Cookfire near the inn | | Hateno Village | Two pots — near Reede's farm and the inn | | Tarrey Town | Central pot available post-reconstruction | | Rito Village | Pot near the general store | | Zora's Domain | Multiple pots throughout | | Goron City | Heat-proof environment — pot always accessible | | Gerudo Town | Pot near the throne room | | Stable campfires | Every stable has a cookfire with pot |

Ingredient Farming Routes

Hearty Radish Farm (Best Healing)

Route: Kakariko Village → East Necluda cliffs → Great Fairy Fountain south of Dueling Peaks → Akkala Citadel area

Big Hearty Radishes respawn after a Blood Moon. A single route hitting these 3-4 locations yields 8-12 radishes — enough for 2-3 maximum-hearts batches.

Mushroom Farm (Versatile Mid-Game)

Route: Eldin Canyon → Death Mountain trail → Akkala forest clearings

Eldin produces Sunshrooms, Ironshrooms, and Razorshrooms in concentration. Akkala adds Heartshrooms and Razorshrooms. One sweep yields 15-20 mushrooms of mixed types.

Monster Parts Farm (Elixir Ingredients)

Route: Any Bokoblin camp → Moblin patrol area → Lizalfos nest

Priority drops: Bokoblin Horns (all elixirs), Moblin Fangs (attack/defense elixirs), Lizalfos Tails (electro/chilly elixirs). Fight camps near stables to sell duplicates.

Dubious Food — What To Avoid

Dubious Food is produced when:

  • You mix ingredients with conflicting effects
  • You combine monster parts with food (instead of critters)
  • You cook only incompatible ingredients

Dubious Food heals only 1 heart regardless of ingredients used. Always double-check your held items before confirming a cook.

Safest cooking strategy: Only hold one type of ingredient at a time, or hold multiple of the same ingredient, until you have memorized recipes well.

Rock Hard Food

Rock Hard Food is produced when you cook raw meat, fish, or vegetables with materials that prevent cooking (gemstones, ore deposits). It cannot be eaten. Don't cook gems.
