Elixirs Guide — All Types, Best Recipes & When to Use Them
Elixirs Guide — All Buffs, Resistances & Potions
Elixirs are the other half of TotK's cooking system — crafted from critters (bugs, frogs, lizards) combined with monster parts. They provide the same buffs as food but often more efficiently for specific effects. This guide covers every elixir type, optimal recipes, and when to reach for an elixir instead of a meal.
How Elixirs Work
Recipe formula: 1 or more critters + 1 or more monster parts = elixir
Key rules:
- Critter type determines the elixir effect
- Monster part determines the potency/duration (higher-tier monster parts = longer duration)
- Mixing multiple critters of the same type extends duration
- Mixing critters of different effects creates a neutral "Dubious Elixir" — don't mix effect types
Elixirs vs Food:
- Elixirs do NOT restore hearts
- Elixirs provide buffs/resistances more efficiently than food in most cases
- Use food for heart restoration + buffs; use elixirs when you only need the buff
All Elixir Types
Hearty Elixir (Extra Hearts)
Critter: Hearty Lizard Effect: Adds yellow bonus hearts (temporary health beyond max) Best use: Before Lynel fights or boss encounters — gives extra buffer HP Duration: 5-10 minutes (varies by potency)
Where to find Hearty Lizards: Floria River area, Faron region, near water bodies in East Necluda
Energizing Elixir (Stamina Restore)
Critter: Restless Cricket or Hot-Footed Frog Effect: Instantly restores stamina wheel Best use: Mid-climb emergency when stamina is about to run out; pulling the Master Sword Note: Restores stamina once — not a duration buff. Different from Enduring.
Enduring Elixir (Bonus Stamina)
Critter: Tireless Frog Effect: Adds bonus yellow stamina rings beyond your max Best use: Long paraglide sessions, extended climbs, Master Sword pull Where to find Tireless Frog: Lanayru Wetlands, Necluda rivers, Zora's Domain area
Mighty Elixir (Attack Up)
Critter: Bladed Rhino Beetle Effect: Attack Up (weapon damage increases) Use with: Barbarian Armor for maximum damage output stack Duration: 3-10 minutes depending on monster part quality
Best monster part pairing: Lynel Guts (longest duration), Bokoblin Guts (medium duration)
Tough Elixir (Defense Up)
Critter: Rugged Rhino Beetle Effect: Defense Up Best use: Before entering a dungeon or facing a high-damage boss Stacking: Defense Up from Tough Elixir stacks with armor defense
Sneaky Elixir (Stealth Up)
Critter: Sunset Firefly or Woodland Rhino Beetle Effect: Stealth Up — reduces noise and enemy detection radius Best use: Sneaking past camps, approaching Lynels undetected, stealth harvesting critters Stacking: Sneaky Elixir + full Stealth Armor set = nearly invisible movement
Where to find Sunset Firefly: Hyrule Field and Necluda forests at night (they glow)
Hasty Elixir (Speed Up)
Critter: Hot-Footed Frog (alternate use) or Hightail Lizard Effect: Movement speed increase Best use: Crossing large flat terrain quickly, outrunning enemies Where to find Hightail Lizard: Kakariko area, East Necluda warm terrain
Spicy Elixir (Cold Resistance)
Critter: Warm Darner (dragonfly) Effect: Cold Resistance 1-3 levels depending on quantity Best use: Hebra mountains, Tabantha Snowfield, Mount Lanayru summit Where to find Warm Darner: Eldin/Akkala border area, warm caves near Death Mountain
Cold coverage: 1 Spicy Elixir = Cold Resistance level 1 (survives moderate cold). Full Snowquill Armor = Cold Resistance level 3. Stack both for maximum insurance.
Chilly Elixir (Heat Resistance)
Critter: Cold Darner (dragonfly) Effect: Heat Resistance Best use: Gerudo Desert, Death Mountain exterior areas Where to find Cold Darner: Lanayru mountains, Necluda cave systems near cold water
Electro Elixir (Shock Resistance)
Critter: Electric Darner Effect: Shock Resistance — prevents knockback from electric attacks Best use: Thunderstorm weather (prevents lightning strikes), Electric Lizalfos fights, Thunderhead Isles Priority: Extremely useful without Rubber Armor. Stack Electro Elixir if you don't have the full Rubber set.
Where to find Electric Darner: Necluda Wetlands, East Akkala, Lanayru riverbanks
Fireproof Elixir (Flame Guard)
Critter: Fireproof Lizard Effect: Flame Guard — prevents fire damage from floor hazards (NOT lava damage) Best use: Death Mountain upper slopes (flaming rocks), Fire Temple interior Where to find Fireproof Lizard: Death Mountain base and slopes (Eldin region)
Note: Flame Guard from Fireproof Elixir protects from ambient fire hazards. Flamebreaker Armor is better for sustained Death Mountain exploration.
Monster Parts — Effect on Duration
The monster part in your elixir recipe determines how long the effect lasts:
| Monster Part Tier | Duration Added | |-------------------|---------------| | Basic (Bokoblin Horn, Chuchu Jelly) | Short (1-2 min) | | Mid-tier (Lizalfos Horn, Moblin Fang) | Medium (3-5 min) | | High-tier (Lizalfos Guts, Moblin Guts) | Long (7-10 min) | | Elite (Lynel Guts, Boss drops) | Maximum (12-20 min) |
Best practice: Save Bokoblin/Moblin Horns for short-duration needs; use Guts (Bokoblin/Moblin/Lizalfos) for longer effects.
Elixir Stacking Rules
- One buff type active at a time — if you drink a Mighty Elixir while one is already active, it refreshes the timer (doesn't stack the Attack Up level)
- Different buff types stack — Attack Up + Stealth Up + Cold Resistance can all be active simultaneously from different elixirs
- Food + Elixir stack — a Mighty Meal (food) + Sneaky Elixir = both buffs active simultaneously
Quick Reference — Best Elixir Per Situation
| Situation | Best Elixir | |-----------|------------| | Before Lynel fight | Mighty Elixir (Attack Up) + Hearty Elixir (bonus HP) | | Hebra/Snowfield exploration | Spicy Elixir (Cold Resistance) | | Gerudo Desert | Chilly Elixir (Heat Resistance) | | Thunderstorm | Electro Elixir (Shock Resistance) | | Death Mountain | Fireproof Elixir (Flame Guard) | | Stealth mission | Sneaky Elixir (Stealth Up) | | Long climb or paraglide | Enduring Elixir (Bonus Stamina) | | Boss fights | Tough Elixir (Defense Up) |
Quick Tips
- Carry 2-3 of each resistance elixir — one for each biome you're entering. Elixirs take no inventory space beyond your pouch count.
- Elixirs before hard fights — pop a Mighty + Hearty before any Lynel or miniboss encounter. The combination is cheap (common critters) but dramatically improves fight outcome.
- Farm critters at night — Sunset Fireflies and some dragonflies only appear at night. Run your critter farming circuit after dark.
- Don't mix critter types — always cook critters of the same type. Mixed types = Dubious Elixir (no effect).
- Hightail Lizards for Speed — underrated. Hasty Elixir + horse = significantly faster field traversal when you don't have fast travel options nearby.
