Energy Cell Guide — Upgrading Your Zonaite Battery

The Energy Cell is TotK's battery for Zonai devices — it powers fans, rockets, flame emitters, and every Zonai vehicle. A larger Energy Cell means more sustained flight, longer device runtime, and more powerful builds. This guide covers how to upgrade it efficiently.

Energy Cell Basics

Starting capacity: 3 Energy Wells (small battery) Maximum capacity: After all upgrades — ~24 Energy Wells (8x starting capacity) What depletes it:

  • Zonai devices while active (fans, rockets, construct factories, etc.)
  • Riding Zonai vehicles (hoverbike, glider, etc.)
  • Using Zonai dispensers (not actually, those cost Zonaite directly)

What recharges it:

  • Natural recharge over time (slow)
  • Stopping all devices temporarily (recharges faster)
  • Energy Cells recharge fully at any point of rest

How to Upgrade the Energy Cell

Energy Cell upgrades happen at Crystal Refineries — Zonai shrines in the Depths.

Upgrade currency: Crystallized Charges — refined from Zonaite and Large Zonaite at the Crystal Refinery.

Exchange rate:

  • 100 Zonaite → 1 Crystallized Charge
  • 1 Large Zonaite → 3 Crystallized Charges (more efficient — prioritize Large Zonaite)

Upgrade cost:

  • 1 Energy Cell upgrade = 100 Crystallized Charges (= 10,000 Zonaite if using basic Zonaite)
  • But with Large Zonaite: 34 Large Zonaite = ~100 Crystallized Charges (much faster)

Total upgrades: There are approximately 8 total Energy Cell upgrades available (some sources indicate more — upgrade until the Crystal Refinery shows no more upgrades available).

Crystal Refinery Locations

Crystal Refineries are Zonai shrines in the Depths — they appear as glowing orange terminals with Zonai designs.

Primary Crystal Refinery:

  • Located in the Depths near the central area below Hyrule Field
  • Coordinates approximately: 0050, -0850, -0500 (Depths)

Other refineries:

  • Additional refineries are scattered through the Depths regions
  • Look for the distinctive orange Zonai glow near major Depths structures
  • Activating the Lookout Landing Skyview Tower and entering the Depths below it is near one refinery

How to reach the Depths:

  1. Find a Chasm (large pit) anywhere on the surface
  2. Drop in (use Brightbloom Seeds for visibility)
  3. Navigate to the Crystal Refinery marker on your Depths map

Zonaite Farming — Best Methods

Method 1 — Zonaite Deposits in Depths (Primary)

Zonaite deposits appear as green crystal formations throughout the Depths:

  • Hit them with any weapon → drop regular Zonaite
  • Large Zonaite deposits appear as larger clusters — hit them for Large Zonaite
  • Best Depths areas: Below Eldin Canyon (many deposits), below Lanayru

Weapon tip: Use a dedicated "mining weapon" (rock-fused club) for Zonaite deposits just like surface ore nodes.

Method 2 — Flux Construct Kills

Flux Constructs are the Depths mini-bosses (glowing block constructs):

  • Each Flux Construct drops 3-8 Large Zonaite
  • Flux Construct I (easiest): 3-4 Large Zonaite
  • Flux Construct III (hardest): 6-8 Large Zonaite
  • All Flux Constructs respawn on Blood Moon

Flux Construct kill strategy:

  1. Identify the glowing core cube (the different-colored block in the construct)
  2. Attack it directly with arrows or Ultrahand (grab and throw)
  3. When it separates, slam the core cube repeatedly
  4. 3-4 rounds = dead

Method 3 — Zonaite Dispensers (Exchange Method)

Zonaite Dispensers in the Depths convert small Zonaite to devices and charges:

  • Less efficient for Energy Cell upgrades but useful for getting specific Zonai devices

How Much Energy Cell Do You Need?

For Hoverbike

The hoverbike (two fans + control stick) is the most popular Zonai build:

  • Uses ~2 Energy Wells per minute of sustained flight at standard speed
  • 3 Wells (base): ~90 seconds of hoverbike time
  • 8 Wells (first upgrade): ~4 minutes
  • 16+ Wells (mid upgrades): ~8+ minutes
  • Recommendation: Get at least 6-8 Energy Wells (2 upgrades) before using hoverbike for serious exploration

For Rocket Launches

Single rocket bursts consume ~1 Energy Well per launch:

  • 3 Wells = 3 rocket launches
  • 8 Wells = 8 rocket launches
  • Rockets are great for gaining height quickly — more wells = more vertical launches per trip

For Sustained Builds (Boats, Large Vehicles)

Large Zonai builds with multiple fans consume energy rapidly:

  • Multi-fan flying vehicles: 3-5 Wells per minute
  • Recommended: 12+ Wells for large builds
  • Maximum (~24 Wells) for late-game sustained multi-device use

Energy Cell Upgrade Priority

Early game (0-2 upgrades): Focus on just surviving. Hoverbike is usable but limited. Get 1 upgrade ASAP.

Mid game (2-4 upgrades): Hoverbike becomes properly usable for cross-map travel. Invest consistently as you collect Zonaite.

Late game (4-8 upgrades): You can use Zonai builds freely without energy anxiety. Focus on maximizing to enjoy the full build system.

Farming efficiency: Each Blood Moon circuit of Flux Constructs + Depths Zonaite deposits gives enough for ~1-2 upgrades if you collect efficiently.

Large Zonaite vs. Zonaite — Priority

Always convert using Large Zonaite first:

  • Large Zonaite gives 3 Crystallized Charges (vs. 100 regular Zonaite for 1 charge)
  • In ratio: 1 Large Zonaite = ~3x more efficient than 100 regular Zonaite
  • Farm Flux Constructs specifically for their Large Zonaite drops

Never sell Large Zonaite (worth 40R) — the Crystal Refinery value is far higher than the rupee value.
