Frox Guide — The Depths' Massive Eyeball Whale

Frox are enormous deep-sea-like creatures that roam specific locations in the Depths — massive, bloated creatures with an eyeball hidden on their back that must be targeted to deal damage. They're among the Depths' most rewarding miniboss encounters. This guide covers every Frox location and optimal fight strategy.

What Is a Frox?

A Frox is a large Depths creature (think of a giant, armored platypus-whale with eyes on its back). It patrols a fixed area in the Depths, occasionally surfacing from the Gloom floor.

Key characteristics:

  • Immune to standard attacks on its armored body
  • Weak point: the eyeball on its back — only vulnerable when exposed
  • Digs into the Gloom floor to submerge and reposition
  • Deals Gloom damage on contact (heart max reduction)

All Frox Locations

Frox appear in specific large cavern areas in the Depths. They don't wander far from their territory:

| Location | Depths Area | |----------|-------------| | Frox 1 | West Depths — large cavern west of Central Mine | | Frox 2 | South Depths — cavern below Faron region | | Frox 3 | East Depths — near Akkala Deep Ruins | | Frox 4 | North Depths — below Eldin | | Giant Frox (boss-tier) | Far West Depths — massive territory |

Finding Frox: Look for areas with unusual gloom pool patterns and circular depressions in the Depths floor — these indicate Frox territory. The gloom is deeper and more actively hostile near Frox.

Exposing the Eyeball

The Frox's eyeball is hidden on its back and only briefly exposed:

Method 1 — Throwing Food at It

The primary intended method:

  1. Frox opens its enormous mouth while roaming → it's feeding
  2. Throw Brightbloom Seeds, rocks, or any throwable item into the open mouth
  3. The item goes into its system → Frox shakes → eyeball pops up on its back
  4. Attack the eyeball immediately with arrows or melee before it retracts

Timing: The eyeball is exposed for approximately 5-8 seconds after the item-in-mouth trigger.

Method 2 — Octorok Item Launch

If a nearby Octorok is present (rare in Depths but possible):

  • Get the Octorok to fire at the Frox
  • Same effect as throwing food — item-in-mouth → eyeball exposed

Method 3 — Direct Attack Stagger

Strong direct hits to the Frox's body (bomb arrows, large Fused weapons) can briefly stagger it:

  • During the stagger animation, the eyeball partially surfaces
  • Less reliable than mouth-feeding but works when you lack throwable items

Combat Strategy

Setup Before the Fight

  1. Equip Ancient Armor (★★ minimum) — Frox deals Gloom on contact; the armor prevents rapid heart reduction during close-range attacks
  2. Prepare arrows — Frox eyeball exposure is a ranged-shooting window; shock arrows or strong Fused arrows are ideal
  3. Bring Sundelion meals — in case Gloom damage accumulates during the fight
  4. Light the area — throw Brightbloom Seeds around the Frox's territory before engaging for better visibility

Fight Loop

  1. Observe the Frox's feeding cycle — it opens its mouth periodically while walking around
  2. Throw an item into the open mouth (any size item works — even small rocks)
  3. Frox shakes → eyeball pops up
  4. Sprint and melee OR arrow volley at the eyeball (3-5 hits per exposure)
  5. Frox submerges into the Gloom floor → repositions → resurfaces
  6. Wait for mouth-open again → repeat

Phase 2 (Below Half HP)

Frox becomes more aggressive:

  • Fewer mouth-open feeding moments
  • More frequent underground dives → surprise resurface attacks
  • Resurface attack: erupts directly under Link's position (avoid by moving constantly)

Phase 2 adjustment: Use bomb arrows to force stagger when mouth-feeding opportunities are rare. Bomb arrow to body → brief eyeball exposure → attack.

Dealing Damage Efficiently

Best arrow type for eyeball: Shock arrows (electricity) deal normal damage and sometimes paralyze the Frox briefly — extending your attack window.

Best melee for eyeball: Sprint to exposed eyeball → jump attack for highest single-hit damage → land combo before retraction.

Fuse tip: A Lynel Saber Horn Fused sword deals massive damage in the short melee window per exposure. Prioritize high single-hit damage over fast weapons.

Rewards

| Drop | Use | |------|-----| | Frox Fang | Armor upgrades, elixirs | | Frox Fingernail | Armor upgrades | | Frox Guts | Elixirs — powerful amplifier | | Dark Clump | Material (no upgrade use — sell) |

Frox Guts are used in armor upgrade chains and produce strong elixirs when combined with critters. They're among the most valuable Depths-exclusive drops.

Blood Moon respawn: All Frox respawn on Blood Moons. Their territories remain fixed — same locations, same fight.

Giant Frox

The Giant Frox in the far west Depths is significantly larger and has more HP than standard Frox.

Differences:

  • Mouth is proportionally larger — easier to throw items in
  • Eyeball exposure lasts longer (8-12 seconds)
  • HP is approximately 3× a normal Frox
  • Drops double loot

Giant Frox strategy: Same as normal Frox but more forgiving timing. The larger scale makes it clearer when the mouth is open and when the eyeball is exposed.

Quick Tips

  • Brightbloom Seeds as bait — throw a Brightbloom Seed (plentiful and cheap) into the mouth for a reliable eyeball trigger. Don't waste valuable items like Bomb Flowers when rocks work.
  • Stand still before throwing — the Frox's feeding cycle requires you to be patient. Don't chase it; let it come to you. When its mouth opens while facing toward you, throw immediately.
  • Ancient Armor prevents Gloom bleeding — equip it even if you're otherwise overpowered. Frox deals Gloom on contact and the heart max reduction compounds quickly without protection.
  • Eyeball arrow volley — use a multi-shot bow (Lynel bow or White-Maned Lynel Bow) during the exposure window for maximum arrows per second. 5-6 arrows in 5 seconds with a multi-shot bow.
  • Frox Guts for elixirs — Frox Guts + Tireless Frog = Endura Elixir with extended duration. Far more powerful than standard critter elixirs. Sell only after your elixir stocks are well stocked.
