Goron City Complete Guide — Tears of the Kingdom

Goron City sits on the slopes of Death Mountain in the Eldin region — the volcanic heart of Hyrule and home to the Gorons. It serves as the hub for the Fire Temple main quest, Fireproof Armor acquisition, and Eldin region exploration. Without Fireproof resistance, Death Mountain's extreme heat environment is lethal — preparation is mandatory.

Getting to Goron City

Route options:

  1. Eldin Canyon Road — Main road northeast from Lookout Landing. Follow the road past the Foothill Stable and up the Eldin Canyon switchbacks. 15–20 minutes on foot.
  2. Eldin Skyview Tower — Launch from the Skyview Tower south of Goron City and glide directly onto the crater approach.
  3. Death Mountain Warp (late game) — After the Fire Temple, fast travel to the Goron City shrine.

Heat preparation before arrival:

  • Level 1 heat (Eldin Canyon): 1 piece of Fireproof/heat-resist gear or 1 Fireproof Elixir
  • Level 2 heat (Death Mountain summit): Full Flamebreaker Armor set or 2 Fireproof Elixirs
  • Fireproof Elixirs are sold at the Foothill Stable (Gaile sells them, 60 rupees each)

Yunobo Questline — Main Quest

When Link arrives in Goron City, something is wrong — the Gorons are acting erratically, eating rocks compulsively, and Yunobo (Daruk's descendant) has turned aggressive. The culprit is Marbled Rock Roast, a marbled stone being sold by a mysterious supplier.

Questline overview:

  1. Speak to the Gorons near the Eldin Canyon Stable to learn about the drug-like rock
  2. Find Yunobo at his office near the mine — he challenges Link
  3. Boss fight: Yunobo (controlled) — Yunobo rolls into a boulder mode and charges. Dodge and use the Goron's own rolling motion against him by Recalling his roll path into terrain.
  4. After the fight, pursue the rock supplier up Death Mountain
  5. Enter the Fire Temple to confront the source

Fire Temple access: After fighting Yunobo, he accompanies Link as a sage. His Rolling Strike ability is required to break volcanic rock seals inside the Fire Temple.

Goron City Shops & Services

Goron City General Store

Hours: Always open Notable stock:

  • Goron Spice (cooking ingredient, adds heat to meals) — 16 rupees
  • Amber (ore) — 30 rupees (useful if you need specific Amber for upgrades)
  • Arrows × 10 — 35 rupees
  • Goron Ore (decorative) — 15 rupees

Rollin' Inn

Cost: 20 rupees per night Benefit: Full HP restore. The only inn on Death Mountain — essential for multi-session Death Mountain exploration without returning to Lookout Landing. Special: Sleeping here during a Blood Moon triggers the Blood Moon cooking bonus immediately on wake — the innkeeper lets you cook at the adjacent fire.

Goron Hot Springs

Location: Southeast of Goron City main plaza Benefit: Soaking in the hot springs for 10 seconds restores all HP and grants a temporary Flame Guard buff (30 seconds of reduced fire damage). Free to use — no rupee cost. One of the best free healing spots in the Eldin region.

Flamebreaker Armor — Complete Set

The Flamebreaker Armor is the primary heat-resistance set for Death Mountain. Sold in pieces at Goron City's armor shop.

| Piece | Cost | Defense | Effect | |-------|------|---------|--------| | Flamebreaker Helm | 1,400 rupees | 3 | Flame Guard 1 | | Flamebreaker Armor | 700 rupees | 3 | Flame Guard 1 | | Flamebreaker Boots | 1,200 rupees | 3 | Flame Guard 1 | | Full set | 3,300 rupees | 9 | Flame Guard 2 |

Flame Guard 2 (full set): Completely negates Death Mountain summit heat damage. No elixirs required at any elevation.

Set bonus (tier 2 upgrade): Fireproof — Link cannot catch fire from any source including Fire Enemies, fire floors, or lava splash. Transforms Death Mountain exploration.

Upgrade materials:

  • Tier 1: Fireproof Lizard × 3 (found on Death Mountain rock faces)
  • Tier 2: Smotherwing Butterfly × 3 (Death Mountain caves and ledges)
  • Tier 3: Fire Lizalfos Horn × 3 (Fire Lizalfos drops)
  • Tier 4: Magma Hands × 2 (rare Gloom Hands variant near summit)

Death Mountain Activities

Goron Mines (Ore Farm)

Location: Above Goron City on the volcano approach Ore types: Flint (abundant), Amber, Opal, Ruby (moderate), Diamond (rare — Black Ore veins) Method: Strike exposed ore veins with a hammer-fused weapon. Blood Moon respawns all deposits.

Best mining route:

  1. Start at Goron City, head up the mine road
  2. Clear ore deposits on left side going up (~8 deposits)
  3. At the summit area, 3 black ore veins with Diamond potential
  4. Return via right side going down (~6 deposits)
  5. Total: ~17 ore strikes per loop

Fire Lizalfos Farming

Location: Mid-mountain paths between Goron City and the summit Drops: Fire Lizalfos Horn (armor upgrade), Fire Lizalfos Tail (cooking, Fireproof Elixirs), Fire Lizalfos Scale

Fire Lizalfos combat tips:

  • They shoot fire loogies — dodge by sidestepping left (they aim center)
  • Ice arrows one-shot Fire Lizalfos at any tier
  • When stunned, grab their dropped fire tail with Ultrahand for instant collection without running across the terrain

Smotherwing Butterfly Farming

Location: Cave entrances and ledge undersides on Death Mountain Active: Primarily at night (18:00–06:00) when the mountain cools slightly Method: Crouch-walk near cave entrances — Smotherwing Butterflies are active near cave mouths at night. Catching them requires slow approach (standard butterfly catch mechanic).

Efficiency tip: Cook a Sneaky meal before butterfly farming — stealth food increases catch rate significantly.

Fireproof Lizard Farming

Location: Rock faces and sunny ledges on the mid-mountain zone Active: Daytime (06:00–17:00) — they retreat to crevices at night Method: Slow approach from below (they don't see Link approaching from beneath their rock perch)

Best spawn points: 4 lizards near the Goron City approach switchbacks (respawn every 2 in-game days).

Fire Temple Preparation

Before entering the Fire Temple:

  1. Full Flamebreaker set (or 10+ Fireproof Elixirs for budget approach)
  2. 2 strong weapons (40+ attack) — Yunobo's Rolling Strike handles the rock puzzles; Link handles enemies
  3. 20+ ice arrows (Fire Temple enemies are all fire-type)
  4. 5+ Fireproof Lizard Elixirs for inside the temple's extreme heat zones

The Fire Temple's Marbled Gohma boss: A massive spider boss hanging from the volcanic ceiling. Use Yunobo's Rolling Strike to break its armored legs — each broken leg opens a damage window on its eye. 3 phases total.

Eldin Skyview Tower

The Eldin Skyview Tower is the launch point for aerial access to:

  • Goron City (direct glide from tower)
  • Death Mountain summit (Skyview launch + Paraglider to summit)
  • Akkala region (launch northeast)
  • Sky Islands above Eldin (several rare resource clusters)

Tower location: ~2432, 0828 — southeast of Goron City on the canyon wall.

Note: The tower has 3 fire-type enemies guarding the base — clear them before attempting tower activation. Ice arrows or a frost Fuse weapon handles them efficiently.
