Overview

Hinox are giant one-eyed giants that sleep across Hyrule's surface, guarding campsites and resting in clearings. They're among the most rewarding regular mini-bosses, dropping high-quality weapons from the necklaces they wear. Tears of the Kingdom includes the same core variants as Breath of the Wild plus the skeletal Stalnox type. This guide covers every variant, their stats, weaknesses, and the best approaches for farming their loot.

All Hinox Variants

Red Hinox

The weakest Hinox variant, identifiable by its reddish skin. Red Hinox are often found sleeping in forests and clearings, particularly in Necluda and East Hyrule.

| Stat | Value | |------|-------| | HP | 600 | | Difficulty | Low | | Typical Loot | Hinox Toenail, common weapons on necklace |

Blue Hinox

The mid-tier variant with blue-tinged skin. More aggressive than Red Hinox and able to take more hits before going down.

| Stat | Value | |------|-------| | HP | 1,000 | | Difficulty | Medium | | Typical Loot | Hinox Tooth, mid-tier weapons on necklace |

Black Hinox

The strongest standard variant, with dark black or charcoal skin. Black Hinox often guard significant locations and carry the best necklace weapons.

| Stat | Value | |------|-------| | HP | 1,600 | | Difficulty | High | | Typical Loot | Hinox Guts, high-tier weapons on necklace |

Stalnox

The skeletal undead Hinox variant. Stalnox are exclusively found in specific caves and in the Depths. They collapse into a pile of bones when defeated during combat — but will reassemble unless you shoot their exposed eye with an arrow during the collapse phase.

| Stat | Value | |------|-------| | HP | 800 | | Difficulty | Medium | | Special Mechanic | Shoot eye during collapse phase to finish | | Typical Loot | Hinox Bone, Stalnox Horn |

Stalnox do not carry necklace weapons — their loot is entirely material-based.

Combat Strategy

Phase 1 — Approach

Most Hinox sleep and won't aggro until disturbed. You can:

  • Shoot their eye from long range with an arrow to wake and stun them simultaneously (Eye is the weakpoint)
  • Sneak up and steal weapons from their necklace before the fight starts
  • Use bullet-time (draw bow while falling) for a clean opening shot

Phase 2 — Eye Strike Priority

The Hinox's eye is the primary weakpoint. Hitting it with any arrow causes a stumble and knockdown, briefly exposing their back for melee attacks. Aim for the eye every time it's visible.

Phase 3 — Ground Phase

When a Hinox falls, rush in and strike multiple times before it recovers. Two-handed weapons with strong fusions (boulder, Lynel horn, Black Lizalfos tail) deal the most burst damage per knockdown window.

Necklace Weapon Theft

You can steal weapons off a Hinox's necklace without fighting by climbing onto their body while they sleep and using Ultrahand to pull weapons free. This is useful when you want their weapon specifically but don't want to engage in combat.

Stalnox Special Mechanic

When a Stalnox's HP is depleted to zero, it collapses into a pile of bones. Its eye rolls free on the ground. You must shoot the eye with an arrow before the Stalnox reassembles — failure to do so causes it to rebuild at partial health. The eye is easy to spot (it glows) but has a time window of roughly 5 seconds.

Locations — Notable Hinox

| Location | Type | Notes | |----------|------|-------| | Rabella Wetlands | Red Hinox | Near Zora's Domain area | | Mount Faloraa | Blue Hinox | Southern Faron | | Eventide Island | Black Hinox | Challenge island, strong variant | | Darun Mire | Stalnox | Cave Stalnox, multiple in area | | Depths — various | Stalnox | Scattered through Depths caves |

Tips

  • Blood Moon respawns all Hinox — schedule regular farming runs after each Blood Moon
  • Bomb Flowers fused to arrows deal area damage to groups near a Hinox
  • Wearing armor with Attack Up buff increases knockdown window damage significantly
  • Stalnox bones (Stalnox Horn, Stalnox Spine) are useful for Elixirs with Attack Up effects
  • A Hinox in the water will try to splash Link — maintain distance and use arrows for the full fight
