Korok Seed Guide — Puzzle Types, Routes & Hestu Upgrades
Korok Seed Guide — Puzzle Types, Routes and Hestu Upgrades
Tears of the Kingdom hides 1,000 Korok Seeds across Hyrule's surface, sky islands, and the Depths. Trading them to Hestu expands your weapon, bow, and shield inventory — the most important quality-of-life upgrade in the game. This guide covers every puzzle type, the best collection strategies, and how to prioritize your upgrades.
What Are Korok Seeds For?
Korok Seeds are the only currency accepted by Hestu, the large dancing Korok who expands your inventory slots. Each category (weapons, bows, shields) can be expanded independently, with costs increasing per slot.
| Slot Number | Seeds Required | |-------------|---------------| | 1st slot | 1 seed | | 2nd slot | 2 seeds | | 3rd slot | 3 seeds | | 5th slot | 5 seeds | | 10th slot | 10 seeds | | Later slots | 15-20 seeds each |
You do not need all 1,000. About 150 seeds gives you a very comfortable inventory. Full completion is for dedicated completionists.
Upgrade Priority
- Weapon slots first — you burn through weapons constantly due to the durability system
- Bow slots second — carrying multiple bow types (sniper, multi-shot, bomb utility) is essential
- Shield slots last — shields break less often and you need fewer varieties
Finding Hestu
Hestu moves between three locations as you progress:
- First encounter: Near Lindor's Brow Skyview Tower in western Hyrule. He is standing on the road and hard to miss.
- Second location: Lookout Landing, after your first interaction. He dances in the central plaza.
- Permanent home: Korok Forest, after you complete the Lost Woods and clear the Deku Tree quest. He stays here for the rest of the game.
All Korok Puzzle Types
1. Lift the Rock
A lone rock sitting conspicuously on a stump, pillar, or cliff edge. Pick it up with Ultrahand or your hands — Korok appears underneath.
Where: Stumps, cliff edges, cave entrances, isolated pillars. Extremely common.
2. Match the Rock Formation
A circle or pattern of rocks with one gap. Find the matching rock nearby (always within 20 meters) and place it in the empty spot using Ultrahand.
Where: Stone circles near ruins, arranged patterns along roads.
3. Pinwheel and Balloon Targets
Approach a pinwheel — balloons appear in the air. Shoot all balloons with arrows before they vanish (about 10 seconds).
Tip: Multi-shot bows make balloon Koroks trivial. A Savage Lynel Bow fires five arrows per draw, popping multiple balloons simultaneously.
4. Hanging Acorn
An acorn dangles from a tree branch on a thin string, or sits inside a hollow log. Shoot it with an arrow.
Where: Near large trees, on cliff faces, over water.
5. Flower Trail
A sparkling flower hovers in place. Touch it — it teleports to a new spot. Follow and touch it 3-5 times until the Korok appears.
Where: Open fields, meadows, forest clearings.
6. Dive Through the Ring
A ring of lily pads, rocks, or flower petals arranged on water or land. Jump or dive through the center of the ring.
Where: Rivers, lakes, ponds. Also land variants with flower rings.
Tip: Line up directly above the center before dropping. Off-center dives will not trigger the Korok.
7. Race Stumps
A glowing tree stump starts a timer when you step on it. Sprint to the next glowing stump before time expires. Repeat through 2-4 stumps.
Where: Forests and wooded areas. Use Tulin's wind gust or whistle-sprint for speed.
8. Companion Korok (Two-Korok Reunions)
A backpack-wearing Korok says "I want to reach my friend!" Use Ultrahand to carry it to its partner (50-300 meters away). Awards 2 seeds per reunion.
Tip: Attach the Korok to a Zonai vehicle — fans on a flat board make transport fast. The partner Korok is marked with an icon once you are carrying the first one.
9. Torch Lighting
An unlit torch or brazier sits near other lit torches. Light it using a flame weapon, fire arrow, or Flint + Wood.
Where: Near ruins, ancient structures, cave entrances.
10. Sparkling Circle
Small sparkles arranged in a circle on the ground. Stand in the center — Korok appears.
Where: Forests, cliff edges, sky islands. Easy to solve but hard to spot — slow down and scan for sparkle effects.
Efficient Collection Routes by Region
Central Hyrule (Best Starting Region)
Dense spread of all puzzle types within walking distance of Lookout Landing. Sweep the roads radiating outward from the center. Expect 30-40 seeds in this region alone.
Akkala (Northeast)
High density of rock puzzles near ancient ruins. Multiple companion Koroks near Akkala Citadel Ruins. Sweep the coastline and highland systematically.
Faron (South)
Dense forest terrain with acorn, pinwheel, and flower trail puzzles. Slower travel but high seed density per square kilometer.
Sky Islands
Every sky island platform has at least 1-2 Koroks. Ring-dive puzzles are especially common. The Great Sky Island alone holds 8-10 seeds — sweep it thoroughly during your first visit.
The Depths
Koroks exist underground but are harder to find in darkness. Companion Koroks are the most common type here. Not recommended for casual farming — focus on surface and sky first.
Speed Techniques
- Whistle-sprint: Hold the whistle button while tapping sprint to move faster than normal sprinting without draining stamina. Essential for race stump puzzles.
- Tulin wind gust: After completing the Wind Temple, Tulin's ability gives a burst of forward speed. Use it to reach elevated Koroks and complete race puzzles.
- Sensor+ camera upgrade: Photograph a Korok-related trigger (acorn, pinwheel) and set Sensor+ to ping when you are near one. This dramatically speeds up hunting.
- Zonai vehicles for companion Koroks: Build a simple fan-board and attach the backpack Korok with Ultrahand. Drive to the partner in seconds instead of walking.
