Leviathan Bones Guide — All 3 Locations & Research Team Quest
Leviathan Bones Guide — All 3 Locations
Scattered across Hyrule are the skeletal remains of three enormous ancient creatures called Leviathans — massive whale-like beings that died in the distant past. Finding all three is required for the "Leviathan Bones" side adventure, which unlocks lore about the Leviathans and rewards you with a unique item.
What Are Leviathans?
Leviathans are ancient sea creatures from Hyrule's mythological past. Their fossilized bones remained after the regions dried out or transformed. Each Leviathan died in a different environment — Hebra's snowfields, Eldin's volcanic plains, and the Gerudo Desert — hinting at massive ecological changes in Hyrule's ancient history.
A three-person research team from Kakariko Village is searching for these remains. Finding and reporting back to them completes the side adventure.
Starting the Quest
Quest: Leviathan Bones (Side Adventure) Trigger: Speak to the research team at Kakariko Village. They're at the entrance road near the village well. Three researchers — Onya, Garini, and Bhodi — are about to split up to each investigate a different Leviathan site.
After talking to all three, the quest registers in your Adventure Log. You need to photograph each Leviathan and report back.
Tip: You don't need to speak to the researchers first to visit the Leviathan sites. You can photograph them on your own timeline and return to report.
Leviathan 1 — Eldin Dragon's Exile Fossil
Location: Eldin Canyon, northeast of Death Mountain
Coordinates (approximate): The Eldin Leviathan is northeast of the Foothill Stable, visible from the road climbing toward Death Mountain. Look for the giant ribcage arching over the canyon walls.
Reaching the Eldin Leviathan
- Fast travel to Eldin Canyon Skyview Tower (north of Death Mountain)
- Head northeast along the canyon road
- The Leviathan's ribcage is draped across the canyon — you can walk under it or climb the bones
Hazard: This area has Fire Lizalfos and the ambient heat increases as you approach Death Mountain. Wear Flamebreaker Armor or maintain a Fireproof Elixir.
Photographer Bhodi
Bhodi is camping near the Eldin Leviathan site. Speak with him after photographing the bones to get his research notes. He believes the Leviathan died when volcanic eruptions dried up the ancient sea that once covered Eldin.
Photo tip: Position yourself at the base of the ribcage and take a photo framing the full arch for the most complete shot of the skeleton.
Leviathan 2 — Hebra Peak Fossil
Location: Hebra Mountains, in the snowfield northwest of Rito Village
Coordinates (approximate): Northwest Hebra, near the Snowfield Stable region. The skeleton is partially buried in snow on the mountain plateau.
Reaching the Hebra Leviathan
- Fast travel to Rospro Pass Skyview Tower (northwest Hebra)
- Head southwest from the tower
- The Leviathan skeleton is visible as a large dark curved structure emerging from the snow
Hazard: Extreme cold. Equip Snowquill Armor or 3× Spicy food to maintain Cold Resistance Level 2. The Hebra plateau has some of the harshest weather in the game.
Photographer Garini
Garini is huddled near the Hebra Leviathan, cold and slightly miserable. Speak with her for research notes. She hypothesizes the Hebra Leviathan died when ancient warm seas froze over during a climatic shift thousands of years before the Zonai arrived.
Navigation tip: The Leviathan is partially buried. Look for the exposed skull and ribcage emerging from the snow — it's most visible from slightly above, so use a sky island vantage or Recall Launch to get altitude before descending.
Leviathan 3 — Gerudo Desert Fossil
Location: Gerudo Desert, northwest of Gerudo Town
Coordinates (approximate): Far northwest Gerudo Desert, in the dunes near the Gerudo Canyon Summit area. The skeleton is buried in sand with only the upper bones exposed.
Reaching the Gerudo Leviathan
- Fast travel to Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower (southern Gerudo Desert)
- Paraglide northwest across the desert dunes
- The Leviathan bones appear as a curving ridge of white bone against the tan sand
Hazard: Gerudo Desert has extreme heat. Wear Desert Voe Armor or eat 3× Chilly food for Heat Resistance Level 2. The deeper desert (northwest) is hotter than the main town area.
Alternative approach: Reach the Gerudo Highlands above and paraglide down to the desert floor — this saves the surface heat exposure time.
Photographer Onya
Onya is the expedition leader. She's at the Gerudo Leviathan site. Her notes theorize the desert Leviathan died as ancient inland seas evaporated during a catastrophic drought. She connects this to the Gerudo people's own ancestral myths about a great ocean that dried up.
Returning to Kakariko — Completing the Quest
After photographing all three Leviathans:
- Return to Kakariko Village
- The three researchers have also returned
- Compare notes with all three — they're near the entrance road
- Onya synthesizes all three findings into a unified theory about Hyrule's ancient ocean ages
Reward:
- Large Zonai Charge (uncommon material)
- Leviathan Bones complete in Adventure Log
- Unique lore entry about Hyrule's ancient geological history
Lore: What Are the Leviathans?
Based on researcher notes and ancient text fragments:
The Leviathans were creatures of the Great Sea that covered ancient Hyrule. Their deaths correspond to the three great geological events that shaped modern Hyrule:
- Eldin Leviathan: Died when volcanic activity from Death Mountain drained and boiled the sea in the Eldin region
- Hebra Leviathan: Died when the Hebra region froze, trapping the creature in ice that eventually became the permanent snowfield
- Gerudo Leviathan: Died when the inland Gerudo Sea evaporated during the age of drought
The three Leviathans represent the end of an age — when Hyrule's ocean became the fractured landscape of mountains, snowfields, and desert that exists today.
This also explains the Zora's longing for water — their ancestors lived in a much wetter world. The Goron's volcanic homeland was once underwater. The Gerudo Desert was once a seabed.
Tips for All Three
- Photograph from a distance first — Some Leviathans are best photographed with the full skeleton visible, which requires standing 20-30 meters away
- Mark on map — Pin each Leviathan location after finding the researcher to avoid losing track
- Complete during regional exploration — Each Leviathan is in a region you'll visit for temples and shrines anyway; pick up photos during your normal route
- Night photography — The Gerudo and Eldin Leviathans look particularly atmospheric at night with the lighting; no gameplay difference but worth seeing
