Lightning Temple Guide — Walkthrough, Riju, & Queen Gibdo Boss
Lightning Temple Guide — Riju's Lightning & Queen Gibdo
The Lightning Temple is the Gerudo region dungeon, accessed after the Gerudo questline. It combines Riju's lightning sage power with TotK's multi-floor terminal puzzle structure. This guide covers the full walkthrough, all 5 terminal locations, and the Queen Gibdo fight.
Prerequisites
Before the Lightning Temple:
- Complete the Gerudo questline — infiltrate Gerudo Town (requires Desert Voe set or Isha's outfit), find the jewelry shop, defeat Gibdo swarm
- Reach Riju — she joins as a sage after the town defense sequence
- Have the Lightning Helm or at least the chest piece — heat resistance for the Gerudo desert approach
Getting to the Lightning Temple
From Gerudo Town:
- Speak to Riju after the Gibdo attack — she agrees to fly you to the temple
- The Lightning Temple is located northwest of Gerudo Town in the desert sky — it's a sky structure, not ground-level
- Riju launches Link with her lightning bow → sky launch → glide to the temple entrance
- You arrive at the outer platform ring
If you missed the launch or need to return:
- The temple has a Entrance Shrine nearby for fast travel
- From the desert surface, use Ascend or a vehicle to reach the temple's altitude
Riju's Lightning — How It Works
Riju's sage power: She fires a lightning arrow that detonates on impact, dealing area-of-effect electric damage and activating lightning-sensitive puzzles.
Key mechanics:
- Summon Riju: Press L to bring her near you
- Target puzzle: Aim bow at the target, Riju fires lightning simultaneously
- Gibdo weakness: Lightning temporarily stuns Gibdo enemies — critical for the boss fight
- Crystal targets: Many terminals require hitting glowing crystals with lightning arrows (your arrow + Riju's bolt hits simultaneously)
Stamina note: Riju's ability has a brief cooldown — you can't rapid-fire lightning endlessly. Between shots, standard arrows still work for puzzles.
Temple Overview
The Lightning Temple has 5 terminals across 4 floors. Each floor has Gibdo enemies and environmental lightning hazards (sparking pillars, electric barriers).
General pattern:
- Find the crystal target on each floor
- Use Riju lightning to activate it
- Some require Ultrahand or Recall to position items between you and the crystal
- Gibdo enemies spawn frequently — lightning staggers them, letting you follow up with melee
Terminal Locations
Terminal 1 — Ground Floor (West Wing)
- Enter the temple → go left (west) from the central chamber
- Past the first Gibdo spawn → reach the west room
- The crystal target is high on the wall — visible from the center of the room
- Stand at room center → aim slightly upward → Riju lightning hits the crystal
- Door opens → access Terminal 1
Terminal 2 — Ground Floor (East Wing)
- From the central chamber, go right (east)
- Two Gibdo enemies — stun with lightning, eliminate
- The crystal is behind a pillar — angle your shot from the room's southeast corner
- Terminal 2 is in the alcove behind the crystal door
Terminal 3 — Second Floor (North)
- Take the stairs/ramp upward from the central chamber
- Second floor has electric barrier blocking progress
- Puzzle: A large metal ball is nearby — Ultrahand the ball into the circuit gap to complete the circuit (ball acts as conductor, deactivates the barrier)
- Once through: crystal target is on the north wall
- Lightning shot → Terminal 3
Terminal 4 — Third Floor (Moving Platform)
- Continue upward to the third floor
- A moving platform crosses a gap — Gibdo appears mid-crossing
- Crystal is on the far wall across the gap — visible only when the platform is at the far position
- Timing: Stand on moving platform → when it reaches far position and crystal is in sight → fire Riju lightning
- Terminal 4 is accessible after the crystal door opens on the far side
Terminal 5 — Roof (Sky Platform)
- From the third floor, go upward through the ceiling opening
- You're now on the temple roof / outer sky platform ring
- Large crystal target on a tower structure above — requires height
- Puzzle: Attach a Zonai fan or use Ascend through the structure to reach the elevated platform near the crystal
- Fire Riju lightning from the elevated platform → Terminal 5
Queen Gibdo — Boss Fight
With all 5 terminals active → main chamber boss door opens → Queen Gibdo
Phase 1 — Immunity Phase
Queen Gibdo is immune to all damage when her sand cocoon is active.
Breaking immunity:
- Riju fires periodic lightning bolts at the arena — watch for Riju charging up
- Do NOT leave the central platform — the outer arena drains HP from sand
- When Riju's lightning fires: it creates a clear zone around the impact point
- Queen Gibdo's cocoon is vulnerable in these zones — attack immediately after lightning
- Hit the exposed body rapidly with any weapon — she re-armors quickly
Pattern:
- Gibdo swarms spawn constantly during Phase 1
- Priority: Stagger Gibdos first (Riju lightning staggers them) → clear the mob → watch for Riju's shot → attack Queen Gibdo
Phase 2 — Enraged (Below Half HP)
At roughly 50% HP, Queen Gibdo takes flight:
- Gains ranged attacks (sand torpedoes shot downward)
- Weak point moves to her wings — target them with Riju lightning
- When lightning hits her wings, she's temporarily grounded → melee window
Phase 2 strategy:
- Dodge sand torpedoes (sidestep — they have a telegraph animation)
- Watch for Riju's charge → fire at Queen Gibdo's wings
- She crashes to ground → sprint in → max-damage weapons
- Repeat until defeated
Recommended gear:
- Any mid-tier weapon works — you need burst damage during the grounded windows
- Fire arrows: effective on Gibdo swarms (they're undead/dry)
- Riju's lightning: free damage every time you trigger her ability
Rewards
- Heart Container (or Stamina Vessel if you haven't started exchanging Lights)
- Riju Sage's Vow — Riju officially joins as a permanent sage; access her lightning power freely hereafter
- Lightning Temple Clear — Gerudo region quest line complete
Quick Tips
- Gibdo swarms before Queen Gibdo — clear the arena swarm early in Phase 1 so you can move freely during Riju's lightning window. Standing in a mob when lightning fires means you miss the Queen Gibdo damage window.
- Stay on central platform — the sand ring outside the main platform deals continuous damage in Phase 1. Never step off to chase Gibdos.
- Fire arrows on Gibdos — the Gibdo swarms during the Queen fight die in one fire arrow hit. Carry 20+ fire arrows before the temple.
- Recall for Terminal 4 — if you miss the timing shot on the moving platform, Recall the platform back to the far position and try again.
- Riju's vow after — once you have her Sage's Vow, her lightning power is available anywhere in Hyrule. Particularly strong against Bokoblin camps and water-based enemies.
