Lynel All Types Guide — Every Lynel Variant in TotK
Overview
Lynels are the hardest non-boss enemies in Tears of the Kingdom — centaur-like lion warriors combining extreme HP, devastating attack patterns, and multiple ranged and melee modes. Defeating Lynels consistently is the mark of mastery in TotK combat. There are five tiers of Lynel, each significantly stronger than the last. This guide covers every variant's stats, location types, combat tactics, and the valuable loot each one drops.
Lynel Tier Overview
| Tier | Name | Color | HP | Difficulty | |------|------|-------|----|------------| | 1 | Red-Maned Lynel | Red/Orange | 2,000 | Hard | | 2 | Blue-Maned Lynel | Blue | 3,000 | Very Hard | | 3 | White-Maned Lynel | White | 4,000 | Extreme | | 4 | Silver Lynel | Silver/Purple | 5,000 | Elite | | 5 | Crimson/Golden Lynel | Gold | 6,000+ | Max Difficulty |
Red-Maned Lynel
The entry-level Lynel, found in the Akkala region and some canyon areas. Red-Maned Lynels are still dramatically more powerful than any other non-boss enemy at their tier. They use basic charge attacks, fireball projectiles, and sword combos.
Key Locations: Akkala Highlands (southeast), Canyon areas near Eldin
Loot: Lynel Hoof, Lynel Guts, Lynel Saber Horn (regular)
Blue-Maned Lynel
Blue-Maned Lynels have more HP, use slightly faster attack combos, and deal higher base damage. Their fireballs have a wider spread. Found throughout Hyrule's mid-tier hostile zones.
Key Locations: Tabantha Frontier, Gerudo Highlands, Hyrule Ridge
Loot: Lynel Hoof, Lynel Guts, Lynel Saber Horn, Lynel Bow
White-Maned Lynel
One of the most fearsome encounters in the game. White-Maned Lynels are fully aggressive, multi-phase fighters. Their sword combos are longer, their charge covers more ground, and their fireball breath can track Link mid-dodge.
Key Locations: Akkala Citadel summit, Mount Lanayru adjacent areas, Colosseum
Loot: Lynel Hoof x2, Lynel Guts, White-Maned Lynel Saber Horn, Savage Lynel Bow
Silver Lynel
Silver Lynels are near-endgame threats with silver and purple coloration. They spawn only after the Demon King's army has fully strengthened across Hyrule (late game progression). Silver Lynels hit harder than White-Maned, move faster, and have additional attack variants including a multi-bomb charge.
Key Locations: Colosseum (post-clear), Floating Colosseum (guaranteed), various late-game plateau areas
Loot: Lynel Hoof x2-3, Lynel Guts x2, Silver Lynel Saber Horn, Savage Lynel Bow+
Golden Lynel (Colosseum / Floating Colosseum Exclusive)
The rarest and strongest Lynel variant, the Golden Lynel or Crimson Lynel appears exclusively in the Floating Colosseum in Hyrule Castle's sky. This enemy has the highest HP of any non-final-boss enemy in the game and uses every attack in the Lynel moveset at maximum speed and damage.
Location: Floating Colosseum (sky island above Hyrule Castle)
Loot: All Silver Lynel drops + rare Golden Horn materials
Universal Combat Strategy
Step 1 — Opening Gambit
Mount the Lynel on your first arrow shot to the face. A hit to the head stuns a Lynel and lets Link mount it by running up and pressing A. Mounted combat bypasses the Lynel's guard entirely — strike as many times as possible before being thrown.
Step 2 — Flurry Rush Windows
After any major Lynel attack (charge, leap slam, fireball), there is a brief recovery window. If you successfully dodge-rolled with perfect timing, Flurry Rush deals rapid multi-hits that bypass the Lynel's defense phase.
Step 3 — Bullet Time Arrows
Draw your bow while in the air (jump, draw bow) to trigger slow motion. Use this window to aim at the Lynel's face for a stun — repeat every time the Lynel charges.
Step 4 — Fuse Priority
Lynel fights are long — bring multiple weapons fused with strong materials. Lynel Horns fused to swords deal extreme damage and are worth saving specifically for Lynel kills.
Tips
- The Barbarian Armor Set (Attack Up bonus) combined with attack food can increase Lynel damage by 50%+
- Silver Lynels in the Floating Colosseum have predictable paths — identify patterns in their first 30 seconds
- Never sprint away from a Lynel — they will charge and one-shot from behind; always face them
- Shock Emitter fused arrows (or Riju's lightning) can stun Lynels mid-combo
- After Blood Moon, all Lynels respawn — schedule dedicated farm runs for weapons and materials
- Lynel Guts are used for the highest-tier armor upgrades — you will need many
