Lynel Farming Guide — Combat Strategies, Drop Rates & Routes
Lynel Farming Guide — Combat Strategies, Drop Rates and Routes
Lynels are the most dangerous overworld enemies in Tears of the Kingdom and the best source of elite fuse materials. The Savage Lynel Saber Horn (+55 attack) is the highest-value fuse material in the game. This guide covers how to fight Lynels efficiently, the best farming circuit, and how to maximize your material yields.
Why Farm Lynels
- Savage Lynel Saber Horn (+55 attack): The best fuse material in the game. A Royal Claymore + Savage Lynel Saber Horn = 91 attack, the highest achievable two-handed weapon.
- Savage Lynel Bow: 5-shot multi-arrow bow, devastating with fused arrows in bullet time.
- Savage Lynel Shield: 62 guard power, second only to the Hylian Shield.
- Lynel Guts: Premium elixir ingredient worth 200 rupees.
Lynel Variants and Drop Tables
| Variant | HP | Key Drops | Saber Horn Value | |---------|-----|-----------|-----------------| | Red Lynel | ~2,000 | Lynel Horn, Lynel Hoof | +15 attack | | Blue-Maned Lynel | ~4,000 | Lynel Saber Horn, Bow | +32 attack | | White-Maned Lynel | ~5,000 | Savage Lynel Saber Horn, Savage Bow | +45 attack | | Silver Lynel | ~7,500 | Savage Lynel Saber Horn, Gems, Star Fragment | +55 attack |
Farm target: White-Maned and Silver Lynels exclusively for Savage Lynel Saber Horns. Red and Blue-Maned are not worth the fight for late-game farming.
Drop Rate Details
Every Lynel kill guarantees:
- 1 horn drop (type matches variant)
- 1 hoof
- 1 guts (not guaranteed from Red)
- Silver Lynels additionally drop gems (Ruby, Sapphire, or Star Fragment)
Core Combat Strategy: Headshot-Mount Loop
The most efficient Lynel kill method is a repeating loop of headshot stagger, mount, and melee burst.
Step 1 — Headshot Stagger
Draw your bow, aim at the Lynel's face, and land a headshot. The face hitbox is larger than it appears — aim slightly below the eyes. A successful headshot staggers the Lynel to its knees for approximately 3 seconds.
Tip: Use a single-shot bow for headshots. Multi-shot bows waste arrows and the spread may miss the face at distance.
Step 2 — Mount
Sprint toward the staggered Lynel and press A to mount when you reach its back. You have about 3 seconds from stagger to mount — do not hesitate.
Step 3 — Mounted Melee Burst
While mounted, spam the attack button. You get 5-8 hits depending on weapon type. Mounted attacks do NOT consume weapon durability, making this the most efficient damage method in the game.
Equip your highest-attack weapon before mounting. A fused two-handed weapon deals devastating damage per mounted hit.
Step 4 — Dismount and Reset
After being bucked off, immediately draw your bow and line up the next headshot. The Lynel typically performs one attack after bucking you — dodge or shield, then headshot as it resets.
Loop Duration
A Silver Lynel takes 4-6 headshot-mount loops to kill with a 70+ attack weapon. The entire fight lasts 2-3 minutes once mastered.
Alternative Method: Flurry Rush
If headshots are inconsistent, Flurry Rush is reliable:
- Wait for the Lynel to attack
- Backflip (for overhead strikes) or sidehop (for charges) at the last moment
- Flurry Rush activates — mash attack for 8 hits with a one-handed weapon
- After Flurry Rush, the Lynel is briefly staggered — mount immediately
| Lynel Attack | Dodge Direction | Timing | |-------------|----------------|--------| | Overhead slam | Backflip | As weapon reaches apex | | Horizontal swing | Sidehop | As arm begins forward arc | | Charge rush | Sidehop | When hooves are 2 meters away | | Fire breath | Sprint sideways | Do not attempt dodge — run |
Equipment Loadout
Weapons
- Primary: Royal Claymore + Savage Lynel Saber Horn (91 attack) for mounted phase
- Backup: 2-3 additional fused weapons in case of durability loss
- Bow: Any single-shot bow with good range for headshots
Armor
- Barbarian Armor Set (upgraded): Attack Up bonus per piece stacks with food buffs
- Alternative: Soldier's Armor for survivability while learning the fight
Food
- Mighty Banana x5 meal: Attack Up Level 3 — stacks with Barbarian Armor for maximum mounted DPS
- Hearty Durian x5: Full heal + bonus hearts as safety net
- Enduring Carrot meal: Extra stamina for extended dodge sequences
Sage Ability
- Sidon (Water Sage): His water barrier absorbs one Lynel hit cleanly — essential against fire breath which deals massive damage. Re-summon after every barrier break.
Best Farming Circuit
Route A — Surface Circuit (4 Lynels, ~45 minutes)
1. Akkala Highlands (White-Maned) Launch from Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower, fly east to the open meadow. Flat terrain with no environmental hazards.
2. Lanayru Road (White-Maned) Southeast of Zora's Domain near the road to Hateno. Bring cold resistance if approaching from Mount Lanayru.
3. Hyrule Field (Blue-Maned/White-Maned) Central Hyrule near the Coliseum Ruins. Multiple Lynels patrol this area in late game.
4. Gerudo Highlands (Blue-Maned) Southwest Hyrule at high altitude. Requires cold resistance gear.
Route B — Depths Circuit (Silver Lynels)
Silver Lynels spawn in the Depths in large underground arenas. These are the highest-value targets:
- Central Depths (below Hyrule Castle) — Silver Lynel in an open arena
- Akkala Depths — Silver Lynel near ancient mine ruins
- Eldin Depths — Silver Lynel in a volcanic cavern
Tip: Silver Lynels in the Depths drop gems and Star Fragments in addition to standard Lynel materials. The Depths route is more profitable per kill but requires Gloom management.
Blood Moon Reset
All Lynels respawn on Blood Moon (every 2 hours 48 minutes of real gameplay). After completing a full circuit, the Blood Moon timer should be close to triggering. Farm other materials or explore while waiting.
Common Mistakes
- Using multi-shot bows for headshots: The arrow spread at distance means fewer face hits. Use a single-shot bow.
- Attacking during fire breath: Fire breath cannot be Flurry Rushed. Sprint sideways or use Sidon's barrier.
- Forgetting to re-equip strongest weapon before mounting: Mounted hits use your equipped weapon's attack power — always switch to your best weapon before pressing A to mount.
- Fighting Lynels on slopes: Lynels gain speed on downhill charges. Fight on flat ground whenever possible.
- Wasting arrows on body shots: Body shots deal minimal stagger. Only headshots create the mount window.
Savage Lynel Saber Horn Usage
After farming, fuse Savage Lynel Saber Horns to your best base weapons:
| Base Weapon | Fused Attack | Notes | |-------------|-------------|-------| | Royal Claymore | 91 | Highest two-handed damage | | Royal Guard Claymore | 87-91 | Royal Guard bonus at low durability | | Master Sword | 85 (115 powered) | Regenerates — never lose the horn | | Knight's Broadsword | 81 | Reliable one-handed option |
Tip: Fuse a Savage Lynel Saber Horn to the Master Sword. Since the Master Sword regenerates, you never permanently lose the fuse material — it persists through cooldown cycles.
