Lynel Guide — How to Find and Beat Lynels in TotK
Lynel Guide — Finding and Beating Every Lynel
Lynels are the most dangerous non-boss enemies in Tears of the Kingdom. They're powerful mini-bosses that drop the highest-tier weapon materials in the game. Mastering Lynels transforms late-game combat.
What Is a Lynel?
Lynels are lion-centaur hybrids — massive enemies with high health, devastating attacks, and intelligent AI that punishes button-mashing. They carry weapons you can take after defeating them.
Why fight Lynels:
- Drop the best melee weapon materials (Lynel Horns, Hooves, Guts — needed for ★★★★ armor upgrades)
- Their weapons (Lynel Saber Horn, etc.) are among the highest-attack items for Fuse
- Defeating them repeatedly is the fastest late-game combat progression
Lynel Tiers
| Tier | Name | Health | Weapon Drops | When They Appear | |------|------|--------|-------------|------------------| | 1 | Red-Maned Lynel | ~2000 | Lynel Sword / Spear / Bow | Early-mid game | | 2 | Blue-Maned Lynel | ~3000 | Mighty Lynel Sword/Spear/Bow | Mid game | | 3 | White-Maned Lynel | ~4000 | Savage Lynel Sword/Spear/Bow | Late game | | 4 | Silver Lynel | ~5000+ | Silver Lynel Saber Horn (Fuse) | After 4th Blood Moon |
Note: Lynels respawn after every Blood Moon (approximately every 2.5–3 hours of in-game time). As you progress through the game (specifically after collecting more Poes), higher-tier Lynels replace lower-tier ones at fixed spawn points.
Lynel Tier Details — HP, Drops, and Difficulty
Red-Maned Lynel
- Health: ~2,000 HP
- Difficulty: Moderate — good entry point for learning Lynel combat patterns
- Weapon drops: Lynel Sword (base attack 24–30), Lynel Spear (base 12–18), Lynel Bow (3-shot spread)
- Material drops: Lynel Horn, Lynel Hoof, Lynel Guts
- Notes: Appears at the earliest accessible Lynel locations. If you're new to Lynel combat, practice on this tier — the attack windows are longer and the damage is forgiving.
Blue-Maned Lynel
- Health: ~3,000 HP
- Difficulty: Hard — attacks come faster and deal more damage than Red-Maned
- Weapon drops: Mighty Lynel Sword (base 36–44), Mighty Lynel Spear (base 20–26), Mighty Lynel Bow
- Material drops: Lynel Horn ×2, Lynel Hoof ×2, Lynel Guts ×1
- Notes: Blue-Maned Lynels replace Red-Maned variants after mid-game progression. Their charge attack is noticeably faster — adjust your Flurry Rush timing.
White-Maned Lynel
- Health: ~4,000 HP
- Difficulty: Very Hard — adds new attack patterns including a wide-radius fire spin
- Weapon drops: Savage Lynel Sword (base 52–62), Savage Lynel Spear (base 30–36), Savage Lynel Bow, Savage Lynel Shield
- Material drops: Lynel Horn ×2, Lynel Hoof ×2–3, Lynel Guts ×1–2
- Notes: White-Maned Lynels have a unique fire spin attack — they breathe fire while spinning 360°. Dodge away from this at range. The Savage Lynel Shield they drop has one of the highest guard values in the game.
Silver Lynel
- Health: ~5,000+ HP (scales with your progression)
- Difficulty: Extreme — highest-damage attacks, fastest movement, most aggressive AI
- Weapon drops: Silver Lynel Saber Horn (Fuse, highest attack in category), Silver Lynel Mace Horn, Silver Lynel Bow
- Material drops: Silver Lynel Horn ×2–3, Silver Lynel Hoof ×2–3, Silver Lynel Guts ×2
- Notes: Silver Lynels have a metallic sheen on their mane. They cannot be upgraded further — Silver is the permanent ceiling. Their Saber Horn Fused to a weapon gives the highest melee damage per hit available to players.
Lynel Locations — Complete Map
Akkala Region
Akkala Lynel (South Akkala Highlands)
- Coordinates: Approximately (3200, 1800, 0130) — south of Dah Hesho Shrine, north of Zora's Domain road
- Tier: Red-Maned early game → Blue-Maned mid → Silver late
- Notes: Patrols the highlands plateau. Accessible early without dealing with Zora's Domain quests. Good training Lynel.
Lomei Labyrinth Island Lynel
- Coordinates: NE ocean (~4400, 3400, 0000) — on the large island northeast of Akkala
- Tier: Blue-Maned → White-Maned
- Notes: Inside the labyrinth interior, not on the open exterior. Navigate the labyrinth to the central area. This Lynel is isolated from other enemies, making it a clean 1v1 fight.
Lanayru Region
Oseira Plains Lynel
- Coordinates: Approximately (2800, 0200, 0100) — on the plains west of Zora's Domain
- Tier: Red-Maned → Blue-Maned
- Notes: One of the first Lynels most players encounter. Located on the road approach to Zora's Domain. Patrols the open plain — easy terrain to dodge in.
Mount Lanayru Lynel (Foothills)
- Coordinates: Approximately (3700, -0400, 0180) — foothills below Mount Lanayru summit
- Tier: Blue-Maned → White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: Elevated terrain makes this fight slightly trickier. The Lynel can corner you against cliff faces. Approach from the open west side.
North Lanayru Snow Field Lynel
- Coordinates: Approximately (3300, 1200, 0300) — snowfield north of Lanayru
- Tier: White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: Cold weather here. Wear cold-resistant armor or bring warming food to avoid health drain during the fight. The snow slows movement slightly — account for this when dodging.
Eldin Region
Deplian Badlands Lynel
- Coordinates: Approximately (1600, 2800, 0100) — in the Deplian Badlands north of Death Mountain
- Tier: White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: Rugged terrain with rocks and boulders that limit movement. The Lynel here patrols a canyon-adjacent area. Fight on the flat sections west of the rock formations.
Death Mountain Slope Lynel
- Coordinates: Approximately (1900, 2400, 0600) — mid-slope of Death Mountain
- Tier: Blue-Maned → White-Maned
- Notes: High heat zone. Wear Flamebreaker Armor or bring fireproof elixirs — the environmental damage adds up during a long Silver Lynel fight.
Central Hyrule
Colosseum Ruins Lynel (Underground)
- Coordinates: Approximately (-0900, -0650, -0500) — beneath Colosseum Ruins in the Depths
- Tier: Silver (always — one of the first fixed Silver Lyne locations)
- Notes: This is THE primary Silver Lynel farm spot. The underground arena is a confined pit — the Lynel cannot roam far. Enter via the Colosseum Ruins hole in Hyrule Field (west of Hyrule Castle). This location spawns a Silver Lynel earlier than most others and is the classic farming destination.
Faron Region
Mount Dunsel Lynel
- Coordinates: Approximately (0800, -2800, 0200) — south Faron near Mount Dunsel
- Tier: White-Maned → Silver
- Notes: Remote location in south Faron. The surrounding terrain is hilly with good open patches for combat. Requires traveling through Faron — teleport to Popla Foothills Skyview Tower for quick access.
Gerudo Region
Gerudo Highlands Lynel
- Coordinates: Approximately (-2800, -0200, 0600) — on the Gerudo Highlands plateau
- Tier: Blue-Maned → White-Maned
- Notes: High-altitude location. Cold weather at elevation. The plateau is open and wide — excellent terrain for Lynel combat with room to dodge in all directions.
Pre-Fight Preparation
Armor
Barbarian Armor Set (Best for DPS)
- Obtainable from: Barbarian Armor set found in three separate Treasure Chest dungeons (Lomei Labyrinth Island NE, Lomei Labyrinth South, North Lomei Labyrinth)
- Set bonus at ★★: Attack Up — increases all melee damage
- Set bonus at ★★★★: Charge Attack Stamina Up — reduces charge attack stamina cost
- Why: The Attack Up set bonus directly increases your Flurry Rush and mounted attack damage. This is the top choice for Lynel farming.
Fierce Deity Armor Set (Best for Charge Attacks)
- Obtainable from: Amiibo rewards (Fierce Deity Link amiibo) or purchasable at Bargainer Statues in the Depths
- Set bonus at ★★: Charge Attack Speed Up — charge attacks release faster
- Why: The rapid charge attack timing during mounted phases makes this excellent for mount damage. Combine with Mighty Elixir for peak DPS.
Upgrade Minimum: Both sets should be at ★★★ minimum before fighting White-Maned or Silver Lynels. Lynel attacks deal 3–6 hearts per hit at base defense.
Arrows
Bring a minimum of:
- 60 regular arrows — for general targeting and face shots
- 20 Shock Arrows — Shock Arrows deal brief stagger to Lynels, creating mount openings
- 10 Bomb Arrows — useful for opening fire when the Lynel is far away
Arrow usage tip: Don't dump all arrows into a Lynel at range. Save most for face shots (stagger → mount opportunity) and for the Flurry Rush setup. The fight should be won primarily through melee.
Food Buffs
Mandatory before Silver Lynel:
- 5+ Hearty Meals — yellow hearts give you buffer HP to survive a mistimed dodge
- Recipe: Hearty Durian × 4 + anything = 20 temporary yellow hearts
- Mighty Elixir (Attack Up Level 2, 8 minutes) — increases all attack output by ~50%
- Recipe: Bladed Rhino Beetle × 3 + Monster Parts
- Optional: Endura food — extra stamina wheels help if you dodge extensively and want more Flurry Rushes
Weapons
What to carry into a Silver Lynel fight:
- 5–6 weapons minimum — Lynels break weapons fast
- Best loadout: Master Sword (if obtained) + 2× weapon with Silver Lynel Saber Horn fused from previous fights + 2× high-base-attack weapon with Lynel Hoof or Lynel Horn fused
- Shield: Savage Lynel Shield or Royal Shield — anything with 30+ guard power
Combat Breakdown — Phase by Phase
Opening Phase — Establishing Control
When you enter Lynel territory, it will immediately detect you and engage. Do not panic sprint — this triggers the charge. Instead:
- Take a breath. Wait for the Lynel to begin its first attack animation.
- Identify the first attack type — charge, swing, or bow volley.
- Execute the appropriate dodge.
Never try to open with a flurry of sword swings. Lynels have a fast retaliation and will immediately punish a prolonged attack chain.
Charge Attack → Flurry Rush (Core Loop)
This is the primary damage cycle for every Lynel fight:
- The Lynel lowers its head and begins to gallop toward you.
- Wait. Do not dodge early — the timing window is just before impact.
- Press ZL + left or right to dodge sideways at the last possible moment.
- If timed correctly, time slows (Flurry Rush trigger) — press Y rapidly for 8–12 hits.
- After the Flurry Rush ends, the Lynel staggers for 1–2 seconds.
- Run to the Lynel's back and press A to mount.
- While mounted, press Y rapidly — you deal free hits with no stamina drain for ~6–10 hits.
- When the Lynel shakes you off, immediately prepare for the next charge.
Timing note: The dodge window for Blue-Maned and higher Lynels is shorter than Red-Maned. If you're missing the Flurry Rush, try delaying your dodge by 2–3 additional frames.
Arrow-to-Face Stagger → Mount
An alternative mount setup when you can't land a Flurry Rush:
- Equip your bow and enter aim mode (ZR).
- Aim directly at the Lynel's face (the mouth/nose area).
- Fire one arrow. If it hits the face, the Lynel staggers for 2–3 seconds.
- Immediately sprint to the Lynel's back and press A to mount.
- Press Y rapidly during the mount for free hits.
This technique is especially useful as a reset when you've lost your Flurry Rush rhythm or after a failed dodge attempt. It costs one arrow but guarantees a mount opportunity.
Multi-shot bow bonus: Using a Lynel Bow (which fires 3 shots simultaneously), one arrow tap guarantees at least one face hit even at moderate range.
Mounted Combat — Maximizing Damage
While mounted on a Lynel:
- Hit count: You can land approximately 8–12 hits before the Lynel shakes you off.
- Weapon choice: Use your highest base-attack weapon. The mount phase does full weapon damage per hit with no stamina cost.
- Fierce Deity bonus: With the Fierce Deity set bonus, charge attacks during mount are nearly instant — this effectively doubles your mounted damage output. Hold down Y briefly between taps.
- Dismount timing: The Lynel always performs a recovery animation immediately after dismounting you. This is your next Flurry Rush window — be ready to dodge.
Fire Breath — White-Maned Specific
White-Maned and Silver Lynels use fire breath in two forms:
Forward cone breath: The Lynel breathes fire in a forward arc. Dodge sideways — the fire travels in a narrow forward path.
Fire spin (spin attack with breath): The Lynel breathes fire while rotating 360°. This is the most dangerous attack. Do NOT attempt to Flurry Rush through this. Run backward and create distance until the spin ends, then re-engage.
Bow Volley — Defensive Response
When a Lynel circles you firing arrows:
- Do not try to dodge every arrow individually.
- Sprint sideways at full speed — arrows have travel time and Lynels lead their shots, but sustained sprinting breaks their aim.
- Shield surf (hold ZL + press A while sprinting) — this lets you block while moving, although it drains shield durability.
Farming Route — Full Lynel Loop
For maximum Silver Lynel drops per session, hit them in this order. This loop prioritizes fast travel efficiency:
- Colosseum Ruins (Depths) — Enter via Central Hyrule, descend to the underground Colosseum. Silver Lynel. Fast travel out after kill.
- Oseira Plains (Lanayru) — Teleport to Zora's Domain or nearby shrine. Silver Lynel on the plains approach.
- Mount Lanayru Foothills — Teleport to Mount Lanayru area shrine. Silver Lynel.
- North Lanayru Snow Field — Short travel north from Mount Lanayru Lynel. Silver Lynel.
- Deplian Badlands (Eldin) — Teleport to Eldin area shrine. Silver Lynel.
- Akkala Highlands — Teleport to Akkala Tower or Dah Hesho Shrine. Silver Lynel.
Full loop time: 45–60 minutes depending on fight speed. Yields 6 sets of Silver Lynel drops per loop.
Trigger Blood Moon mid-loop: You can use a campfire and rest until blood red night to force a Blood Moon, which respawns any Lynels you've already killed earlier in the loop. This lets you re-run the Colosseum Lynel twice per loop. Use this when you need a specific rare drop.
Post-Blood Moon Respawn Notes
- All Lynels respawn after every Blood Moon.
- Blood Moons occur approximately every 2.5–3 hours of real in-game time (not real-world time), but they can be forced by resting at a campfire on a clear night and waiting.
- Lynel tier does NOT reset — once a Lynel has upgraded to Silver, it respawns as Silver after each Blood Moon. You do not need to farm lower tiers again.
- After very late game (100+ hours), most Lynel locations default to Silver permanently.
- The Blood Moon cutscene serves as a "save checkpoint" for farming — after a successful loop, trigger a Blood Moon to confirm all Lynels reset before starting the next loop.

How to Use Lynel Materials
Lynel Saber Horn (Fuse): Fuse to any melee weapon — provides massive attack bonus. Silver Lynel Saber Horn fused to a Royal Broadsword or Knight's Broadsword gives one of the highest DPS weapons available.
Lynel Guts: Required for final-tier (★★★★) upgrades on armor sets including Barbarian Armor, Fierce Deity Armor, and Champion's Leathers. Farm Guts actively — they're the bottleneck ingredient for most endgame armor.
Lynel Hoof: Required at ★★★ and ★★★★ for multiple armor sets. Silver Lynel Hooves are required for the highest defense armor upgrades.
Lynel Bow: The Lynel Bow fires 3 arrows simultaneously (consumes 1 arrow). This makes it excellent for staggering Lynels with face shots and for general combat. Silver Lynel Bows fire 5 arrows simultaneously.
Advanced Tips
Don't get cornered. Lynels get aggressive when they close distance. Always maintain space to dodge. Fighting in open flat terrain is easier than in narrow canyon areas.
Use Stasis+ (camera) before engaging. Take a photo of the Lynel with the Camera ability to add it to the Compendium. This lets you use Sensor+ to track nearby Lynel locations on the map.
Bring multiple weapons. Lynel fights are long and weapons break. Carry 5+ weapons before attempting a Silver Lynel so you don't run out mid-fight.
Charged attacks on mount. If you have the Fierce Deity Armor set bonus (charge attack speed), charged attacks during the mount phase are nearly instant — massive damage per second.
Arrows to the face stagger briefly. Shooting a Lynel in the face with an arrow staggers it for 2–3 seconds — an opportunity to land a free hit or close distance.
Stamina management during Flurry Rush. Each dodge costs stamina. If you run out of stamina mid-fight, you cannot perform Flurry Rushes. Eat Endura food or carry Endura Carrots to extend your stamina pool.
Chain Flurry Rush → Mount → Flurry Rush. With practice, you can chain these indefinitely. After dismounting, the Lynel always does a recovery shake — use this moment to position for the next charge and land the Flurry Rush immediately. Master this loop and Silver Lynels die in under 3 minutes.
Avoid the leap slam. If a Lynel leaps into the air above you, sprint in any direction — the slam has a medium radius but does not track well if you're already moving.
Elixir refresh timing. A Mighty Elixir lasts 8 real-time minutes. For a full farming loop, drink one before entering each fight, not at the start of the loop. This ensures full attack buff for every fight.
