Rocket Guide: Zonai Rockets for Speed and Launches
Zonai Rockets are the fastest propulsion devices in Tears of the Kingdom. A single rocket can launch Link hundreds of meters into the air in seconds, making them invaluable for reaching sky islands, extending glide range, and building high-speed combat vehicles. This guide explains how to use them effectively.
What Is a Zonai Rocket?
A Zonai Rocket is a cylindrical red-and-gold device with a pointed nose. When activated, it fires a massive thrust in the direction it's pointed and burns for approximately 3-4 seconds before expiring. Rockets attached to vehicles or shields propel them at extreme speed. Rockets attached to surfaces and aimed upward launch Link into the air.
Where to Find Rockets
- Sky island Zonai dispensers: Rockets are one of the more common drops, especially on sky islands near the Great Sky Island
- Construct Factory: High-tier dispensers in the Construct Factory complex drop rockets frequently
- Autobuild schematics: Several preset Autobuild designs use rockets for propulsion
- Treasure chests: Some named sky island ruins contain device capsule chests with rockets
The Shield Rocket Launch
This is the most important rocket application for general exploration:
- Equip a shield
- Hold a Rocket capsule via Fuse onto the shield (don't attach it to a structure — Fuse it to the shield itself)
- When you need altitude, jump and immediately activate the shield rocket
- The rocket fires from the shield downward, launching Link upward
- Open paraglider at peak height
A single rocket fused to your shield gives you a massive altitude boost — enough to reach most low-altitude sky islands from surface level.
Vehicle Propulsion
Attach rockets to vehicles horizontally for speed boosts:
- One rocket on the back of a cart gives a quick burst of horizontal speed
- Two or three rockets on a large vehicle create a fast assault platform
- Rockets on a hoverbike extend the effective range before battery runs out
Vertical Launch Platforms
Place a rocket on the ground pointing upward, stand on a flat surface attached above it, and activate. This creates a simple launch pad. Useful for reaching cave ceilings or cliff ledges that are just out of paraglider range from ground level.
Rocket + Wing Glider (Fastest Simple Vehicle)
The most versatile rocket build for exploration:
- Place a wing (Zonai glider) on flat ground
- Attach a rocket horizontally to the wing's tail (pointing backward)
- Board the wing
- Activate rocket — the wing launches forward and gains altitude
- Glide to destination when rocket expires
One rocket burst extends into a glide of 500+ meters on flat trajectories. Add a fan to the wing for sustained horizontal propulsion after the burn ends. This is the fastest ground-to-sky transition that doesn't require an existing Skyview Tower.
Rocket + Hoverbike Extension
Standard hoverbikes (two fans + steering stick) have limited range before battery is depleted. Adding a rocket extends range significantly:
- Build standard hoverbike (2 fans + steering stick)
- Attach one rocket pointing backward at the rear
- Activate rocket at altitude peak — 3-4 seconds of thrust covers 200+ additional meters
- Continue on fan power after rocket expires
The burst lets you cross gaps that would otherwise require a larger Energy Cell or additional fans.
Combat Applications
Rocket shield knockback: Fuse a rocket to a shield, jump toward a group of enemies, activate shield at close range. The thrust deals burst damage and knocks enemies back — small damage but creates immediate breathing room from a surrounded position.
Vertical ambush from above: Build a rocket launch pad pointing upward behind cover, board it, activate. At peak height, draw bow and enter bullet-time to headshot enemies below during the apex of the launch. Effective in enclosed Depths spaces where enemies can't follow vertically.
Economy Tips
- Reserve rockets for altitude: Rockets have the best altitude-per-Energy-Cell ratio of any Zonai device. Use them specifically for altitude gain; use fans for sustained horizontal travel.
- Emergency shield rocket: Keep 1-2 rockets available to fuse to your shield as an emergency boost when terrain dead-ends block the path. 5-10 second setup time is faster than any alternative at a dead end.
- Depths Lightroot platforms: Several Depths Lightroots sit on elevated ledges inaccessible without a rocket or elaborate vehicle build. A single rocket + Ultrahand-dragged flat stone creates an instant two-step elevator platform.
- Dispenser batching: Feed Dispensers with Large Zonaite in large batches — the larger the input, the higher the probability of multiple rockets in the same output sequence.
