Secret Passages & Hidden Shortcuts Guide

Tears of the Kingdom rewards explorers with hidden passages, secret routes, and traversal shortcuts that dramatically cut travel time between major areas. Many of these are never explained by the game — you discover them through exploration, Ascend experimentation, or community discovery. This guide collects the most valuable secret routes.

Ascend Shortcuts

Ascend is TotK's most powerful traversal secret — it lets Link pass through any ceiling that is part of solid terrain geometry. This creates shortcuts that no one expects:

Hyrule Castle Shortcut

Standard route: Long climb up castle exterior → multiple enemy floors → throne room Ascend shortcut: Enter the castle basement via the Gloom moat, then Ascend vertically through multiple floors to bypass up to 8 floors of enemies and reach the upper castle directly.

How: Enter Hyrule Castle via the northwest basement access. Find a room directly below your target floor. Activate Ascend and pass through 1-3 floors per use. You can reach the Sanctum (final boss room approach) in under 3 minutes this way.

Fire Temple Ascend Paths

The Fire Temple on Death Mountain has multiple Ascend shortcuts through its floor levels:

  • The second lock room has an accessible floor you can Ascend through from below
  • Bypasses the long mine-cart segment on your return route after the boss

Depths to Surface

Anywhere in the Depths where the ceiling is a thin rock layer (visible as slightly lighter stone), Ascend pushes you directly to the surface — emerging into the exact overworld coordinates above you. This is a fast exit from any Depths area when you need to surface quickly.

Hidden Cave Passages

Akkala — North Sea Coast Cave

Behind the waterfall on the Akkala Sea coast (northwest face, near Robbie's Lab coordinates) is a hidden cave entrance that bypasses the mountain ridge entirely. Contains a chest and emerges on the far side of the Akkala cliff face — saving a 10-minute climb.

Zora's Domain — Underwater Tunnel

In the reservoir east of Zora's Domain, diving to the bottom reveals a submerged tunnel that connects to the inner cavern system below the throne room. The Zora Armor's swim dash ability is required to navigate the current sections.

Gerudo Town — Hidden Desert Tunnel

On the south wall of Gerudo Town's outer perimeter, a small cracked section is Ascend-accessible or breakable with a bomb. The tunnel behind connects to the Gerudo Desert's voe area — bypassing the formal town entrance and the Yiga ambush near the main gate.

Korok Forest — Entrance Shortcut

The Lost Woods approach to Korok Forest normally requires following the leaf patterns. However, a cave system on the western edge of Korok Forest's cliff bypasses the Lost Woods puzzle entirely — climb the western cliff face, enter the cave, and emerge inside the Forest.

Hebra — Snowfield Cave Network

Three connected caves in the Hebra snowfield share internal passages. Entering at the southernmost cave (near Snowfield Stable) and navigating the cave system exits near Hebra Peak — cutting the exposed snowfield crossing that normally takes 5-8 minutes.

Depths Access Points

The Depths are accessed through Chasms — dark holes in the ground. Many Chasms are hidden:

| Hidden Chasm | Location | Surface Coordinates | |-------------|----------|---------------------| | Hyrule Castle Basement | Under castle structure | (0140, 0840, 68) | | Akkala Citadel Cave | Cave system in Akkala ruins | (3820, 2440, 180) | | Gerudo Desert Sinkhole | Southwest desert | (-3640, -0940, 22) | | Eldin Cave Shaft | Inside Death Mountain cave | (2140, 2680, 450) | | Lanayru Cave Drop | Cave behind Zora's Domain waterfall | (2720, 0640, 240) |

Using a hidden Chasm can drop you directly into the Depths near your target Lightroot — significantly faster than navigating from a main Chasm to the same location.

Fast Traversal Tricks

Hoverbike + Whistle Sprint Combo

  1. Build or Autobuild a hoverbike near your start point
  2. Ride it to within range of your destination
  3. Dismount mid-flight and use Whistle Sprint for the final approach
  4. This preserves the hoverbike (it persists after you dismount briefly)

Updraft Chains

Volcanic and storm biomes have natural updrafts:

  • Death Mountain: Open your paraglider in any rising hot-air column near cave mouths for free altitude gain
  • Thunderhead Isles: Storm updrafts above the lightning temple can carry you 200+ meters up without using stamina
  • Great Sky Island: The central pillar creates a reliable thermal updraft — paraglide circles around the temple for continuous altitude

Recall + Projectile Travel

Use Recall on a thrown object to essentially teleport back to your previous location:

  1. Throw a rock or object from Point A toward Point B
  2. Activate Recall on the object
  3. Run onto the object while it travels backward along its arc
  4. The object carries you from B back to A at high speed

Most useful for crossing gaps you've thrown objects across previously.

Skyview Tower Hidden Paths

Every Skyview Tower has a hidden path for re-entry without activating the launch mechanism again:

  • Lookout Landing: The tower has a side rope-climb that bypasses the interior elevator
  • Ulri Mountain: Cave entrance at the tower base connects to the interior stairs
  • Eldin Canyon: The lava drainage pipe next to the tower is climbable from below using fire-resist gear

These allow you to reach tower height for paraglider launches without burning any Zonai energy.

Shop Tunnels & Merchant Shortcuts

Kakariko Village Underground

Beneath the inn in Kakariko Village, a basement passage connects to the Sheikah stone area on the far side of the cliff — bypassing the village path loop.

Tarrey Town Express

The Tarrey Town bridge construction side quest reward includes a permanent boat dock on the lake's south shore — a fast approach to town that avoids the long road around Lake Akkala.

Lookout Landing to Hyrule Castle

A direct river approach from Lookout Landing to Hyrule Castle's eastern moat entrance cuts travel time from 8 minutes (walking the road) to 2 minutes (raft across the river).

Summary — Top 5 Shortcuts

| Shortcut | Time Saved | How | |----------|-----------|-----| | Hyrule Castle Ascend skip | 15-20 min | Ascend through floors from basement | | Korok Forest cave bypass | 10 min | West cliff cave bypasses Lost Woods | | Zora's Domain underwater tunnel | 5 min | Dive to submerged passage | | Hidden Chasm placement | Varies | Skip Depths navigation entirely | | Gerudo Town cracked wall | 8 min | Bypass Yiga ambush + entrance queue |
