Secret Stones Guide — What They Are and How They Work in TotK
Overview
Secret Stones are ancient artifacts of immense power in Tears of the Kingdom, connected directly to the Sage abilities, the Dragons of Hyrule, and the game's central mystery. Each stone is a condensed form of the Triforce's divine energy, passed down through Hyrule's sacred lineage. Understanding Secret Stones explains why the five dragons exist, what happened to Zelda, and how Ganondorf achieved his final form.
What Are Secret Stones?
Secret Stones originated with Rauru, the first king of Hyrule, who possessed one as a divine right of his bloodline. They appear as smooth, glowing gemstones of varying colors. A Secret Stone grants its bearer amplified magical power and, critically, the ability to transform into a dragon by swallowing the stone.
This transformation is irreversible. A person who swallows their Secret Stone becomes a dragon permanently — their consciousness remains but their human form is gone forever.
The Five Secret Stones
| Stone | Bearer | Dragon Form | Color | |-------|--------|-------------|-------| | Rauru's Stone | Rauru (ancient king) | — (sacrificed differently) | Gold | | Sonia's Stone | Stolen by Ganondorf | — | Red | | Mineru's Stone | Mineru (Sage of Spirit) | — (used for construct) | Purple | | Zelda's Stone | Zelda | Light Dragon | Gold/White | | Ganondorf's Stone | Ganondorf | Demon Dragon | Black/Red |
Zelda and the Light Dragon
The central revelation of TotK's story is that Zelda swallowed her Secret Stone to transform into the Light Dragon — the massive golden dragon Link has been encountering throughout his adventure. Zelda made this sacrifice to carry the Master Sword backward through time so that Link could find it in the present day with the necessary power to defeat Ganondorf.
By becoming a dragon, Zelda gave up her human existence. The Light Dragon appears throughout all regions of Hyrule, flying in large circular patterns at high altitude. Link can land on its back and claim the Master Sword from between its horns once the sword has charged sufficiently.
Ganondorf and the Demon Dragon
At the game's climax, Ganondorf swallows his Secret Stone — a stone he obtained by killing Queen Sonia and stealing hers — transforming into the Demon Dragon. This triggers the final boss sequence above the clouds. The Demon Dragon is a corrupted black-and-red version of a dragon, covered in gloom crystals.
The final battle involves the Light Dragon (Zelda) and the Demon Dragon (Ganondorf) clashing above Hyrule, with Link riding the Light Dragon to fight on the Demon Dragon's back.
Mineru's Stone
Mineru used her Secret Stone differently — she stored her consciousness and spirit inside a Zonai Construct rather than transforming into a dragon. This explains why the Mineru construct feels alive and intelligent, and why her spirit persists long after her physical death.
Sage Abilities and Secret Stones
The four living sages — Tulin, Riju, Sidon, and Yunobo — each possess a smaller fragment or reflection of Secret Stone power, which is the source of their sage abilities. Their stones grant access to elemental powers (wind, lightning, water, fire) that Link can invoke through the sage vow system.
Tips and Lore Connections
- The Light Dragon always flies a consistent route across Hyrule — track it from a Skyview Tower to intercept it
- Collecting all 12 Dragon's Tears memories reveals the full context of Zelda's sacrifice
- The Master Sword on the Light Dragon's head grows stronger as you collect more Dragon's Tears — don't rush to grab it before it's fully charged (after the 12th tear)
- Ganondorf's ability to steal a Secret Stone from Sonia is depicted explicitly in the memory sequence
