Basum Shrine — Ice and Snow

Location: Hebra Mountains, northwest Hyrule Ability Required: Ultrahand Difficulty: Easy — ice and snowball physics puzzle

Overview

Basum Shrine uses the Hebra region's snowy physics — snowballs grow as they roll downhill, and ice blocks can be arranged to create ramps and bridges. A light, creative puzzle that plays well with the cold mountain atmosphere.

Preparation

  • Cold-resistant gear required for the approach (Snowquill Armor or spicy elixirs)
  • Inside shrine: temperature-neutral
  • No combat

Walkthrough

Room 1 — Snowball Ramp

  1. A large snowball sits at the top of an icy slope. A gate is blocking the path — the gate has a pressure plate in front of it.
  2. Use Ultrahand to pick up the snowball and place it uphill from the slope.
  3. Release it — the snowball rolls down the slope, grows as it gathers more snow, and smashes into the pressure plate area, holding the gate open.
  4. Sprint through the gate while the snowball maintains pressure.

Room 2 — Ice Bridge

  1. Three ice blocks of different sizes are available. A gap of about 10 meters needs to be bridged.
  2. Use Ultrahand to stack or line up the ice blocks horizontally across the gap, creating a walkable bridge.
  3. Walk across to the next chamber.

Room 3 — Snowball Target

  1. A large bowl target is set into the floor of the far platform. A snowball sits on a shelf above and to the left.
  2. Use Ultrahand to pick up the snowball and release it down the slope at the correct angle to land in the bowl.
  3. When the bowl catches the snowball, the altar gate opens.

Chest Summary

| # | Contents | Location | |---|----------|----------| | 1 | Opal | Room 2 — frozen into an ice wall on the left side. Shoot a fire arrow at the ice block to melt it and access the chest. |

Tips

  • Snowballs grow: A small snowball released on a snow-covered slope will grow as it rolls. Release it from higher up to get a bigger impact.
  • Ice block bridge: The blocks don't need to be perfectly level — as long as they span the gap and aren't too steep, Link can walk across. Slight slopes are fine.
  • Room 3 angle: Aim the snowball's release direction so it curves into the bowl. A straight downhill shot usually overshoots — angle it slightly sideways.
  • Chest location: In Room 2, look for a chest frozen into an ice wall. Shoot a fire arrow at the ice block to melt it and access the chest.
  • Gate timing in Room 1: The snowball only maintains pressure while it's in contact with the plate. If the snowball is too small, it may roll off — try dropping the snowball from a higher point on the slope to build more mass.
