Dakakuri Shrine — Spinning Wheels

Location: Hebra Mountains, northwest Hyrule Ability Required: Ultrahand Difficulty: Medium — rotation and spinning mechanism puzzle

Overview

Dakakuri Shrine is a rotation puzzle — every mechanism in this shrine spins. You'll grab spinning wheels, use them to wind up platforms, and ride rotating gear systems to cross gaps. Understanding how rotation translates to linear motion is the key skill here.

Preparation

  • No combat
  • Cold gear for the mountain approach
  • Takes 8–10 minutes

Walkthrough

Room 1 — Wind the Platform

  1. A platform on the far side is connected to a vertical spindle. The platform can be wound up (raised) by rotating the spindle.
  2. Use Ultrahand to grab the spindle handle and rotate it — wind it clockwise to raise the platform.
  3. Wind it up to the level of the upper corridor, then sprint across to the raised platform before it unwinds.

Room 2 — Gear Chain

  1. Three interconnected gears connect a hand-crank on the left to a gate mechanism on the right.
  2. Use Ultrahand to spin the hand-crank — the gear chain transmits the rotation to the gate mechanism and opens the gate.
  3. The gate stays open only while you're spinning. You need to spin and sprint simultaneously.
    • Alternative: Wind the crank enough rotations that the gate opens, then release and sprint. The inertia of the gear system keeps the gate open for 3–4 seconds.

Room 3 — Carousel Ride

  1. A large rotating carousel platform is the only way across a long gap.
  2. The carousel spins at a fixed rate. You must board it as it passes your starting ledge and exit onto the far ledge as it passes there.
  3. Time your jump onto the carousel. The landing strip on your end is about 2 seconds wide. Board, ride 180 degrees, then jump to the far ledge.

Tips

  • Spindle winding: Rotate the spindle continuously in one direction — don't stop mid-wind or the platform will unwind from the resistance.
  • Gear crank inertia trick: Spin the crank with a fast circular Ultrahand motion (not just one rotation) to maximize stored inertia. 3–4 fast rotations gives enough open-gate time to sprint through.
  • Carousel boarding: Don't jump at the carousel when it's rotating away from you — wait for it to complete its half-rotation and come around to your side again. It passes your ledge every 5–6 seconds.
  • Carousel exit timing: When the far ledge is 1 second away, jump early. The carousel is moving, so leading your jump ensures you land on the ledge rather than short of it.
  • Chest access: In Room 2, look for a chest on a high shelf accessible by riding the gear chain's large gear as it rotates — stand on the gear edge and ride it to ceiling height.
