Tolonesh Shrine
Tolonesh Shrine — Proving Grounds: Swings and Gaps
Location: Central Hyrule, Hyrule Field west Coordinates: (-1412, -0268, 0018) Type: Puzzle Shrine Difficulty: Easy
Overview
Tolonesh Shrine is a rope and swing traversal puzzle — using Ultrahand to manipulate hanging ropes, extending bridges, and creating swing-based crossings. The Central Hyrule location makes this one of the first accessible movement-focused shrines, and its mechanics complement the pendulum lessons from nearby Mayachin Shrine. Rope physics in TotK are organic and responsive — ropes swing, stretch, and interact with environment and gravity — and Tolonesh specifically teaches how to use this system for crossing gaps and reaching high ledges through momentum rather than raw construction.
Preparation
- Basic Ultrahand for rope manipulation
- Good jump timing — the swing mechanic requires jumping at arc apex for maximum distance
- No weapons or armor required inside the shrine
- No temperature gear needed — Central Hyrule is temperate
- Accessible early game; a cooked meal for hearts is sufficient preparation
Walkthrough
Step 1: Rope Extension Bridge
The first room has a gap with a rope dangling from the ceiling. The rope is too short to reach the far platform while swinging. Use Ultrahand to attach a wooden board to the rope's end, extending the length. The extended rope now reaches the far platform when swung to its rightmost arc. Grab the rope+board at its leftmost point and ride the swing — release at the rightmost apex and land on the far platform.
Step 2: Rope Ladder
The second section has a ledge 5 meters above. A rope hangs from the ceiling to approximately 2 meters off the ground — too high to climb from a standing position, but reachable with a jump. Grab the rope at the bottom by jumping and holding, then climb hand-over-hand upward. The rope leads directly to the upper ledge. This room establishes rope-climbing as distinct from wall-climbing.
Step 3: Pendulum Timing Crossing
The third room has two ropes swinging in opposite directions across a gap — the left rope swings right-to-left, the right rope swings left-to-right. Transfer from the left rope to the right rope mid-swing when they're closest at center arc. Grab the left rope, swing left-to-right, transfer to the right rope at center, then ride the right rope to the far platform. Miss the transfer and you fall — the drop is survivable.
Step 4: Rope-and-Boost
The final section has a high ledge that even the longest rope swing won't reach from the floor. Use Ultrahand to raise the anchor point of the available rope from its floor mount to a higher ceiling hook — repositioning the rope's origin elevates the swing arc, giving the rightward arc enough height to reach the ledge. Reattach rope to the ceiling hook, swing, and land.
Step 5: Altar
The altar is on the high ledge. Collect your Light of Blessing. The chest contains Energizing Elixir — stamina restoration for climbing-intensive exploration.
Tips
- Rope extension with boards in Step 1: any wooden piece from the environment works — boards, sticks, anything Ultrahand can attach
- Rope climbing is slower than wall climbing but works without stamina drain — use ropes for vertical traversal when stamina is low
- The transfer timing in Step 3: both ropes cross center simultaneously at one point in their cycle — count the swings to predict the crossing window
- Raising the anchor in Step 4: the ceiling hook is visible as a protruding ring — Ultrahand can re-hook ropes to it precisely
- Ropes in the overworld work identically — find and use them in Hyrule's ruins and structures for navigation shortcuts
