Torenaki Shrine — Waterwheel Power

Location: Lanayru Wetlands, east of Zora's Domain Coordinates: (3224, 0512, 0148) Type: Puzzle Shrine Difficulty: Medium

Overview

Torenaki Shrine sits in the lush Lanayru Wetlands region, where abundant water and green terrain contrast with the surrounding Hyrule. The shrine's puzzles center on waterwheel mechanics — directing water flow to power wheels that open gates and lift platforms. The water theme fits perfectly within the Lanayru region's aquatic identity, and the shrine's interior reflects this with channels, waterfalls, and the sound of flowing water throughout. Players who completed Sidon's questline will find this shrine's water mechanics familiar and satisfying.

Preparation

  • No special equipment required beyond basic Ultrahand proficiency
  • Zora Armor is useful if you plan to swim in the waterways connecting Lanayru — not required in the shrine
  • Full hearts for the Lanayru approach — Gibdos and other enemies patrol the wetlands
  • Bring a bow with standard arrows — some precision shooting is needed for targets in the shrine
  • No temperature gear needed — Lanayru Wetlands are temperate year-round

Walkthrough

Step 1: Direct the First Flow

The entry room has a water source flowing from the north wall into a channel that splits in two directions. A gate valve (a wooden block in the left channel) diverts water left or right. Use Ultrahand to move the valve to the right channel — water flows left, powering the first waterwheel. The wheel turns and opens the first gate. Move through.

Step 2: Waterfall Platform

The second room has a waterfall dropping 3 meters onto a stationary platform. A gate above the platform is powered by the waterfall — when water hits the platform's waterwheel, the gate opens. However, the platform is misaligned — position it with Ultrahand directly under the waterfall's center. The waterwheel engages, the gate opens.

Step 3: Dual Wheel Activation

The third room requires two gates to open simultaneously — each powered by a separate waterwheel. One waterwheel is already positioned correctly under a permanent waterfall. The second wheel is detached and leaning against the wall. Use Ultrahand to position it under the second waterfall spout, orienting it so the paddles catch the flow. Both wheels spin, both gates open.

Step 4: Upstream Puzzle

The final section requires reaching a higher level — but the water flows downward, away from the exit. A Zonai-powered pump in the corner can reverse the flow direction when activated by a switch. Hit the switch with an arrow — the pump activates and water begins flowing upward through a lift channel. Stand in the lift channel, and the upward water pressure carries Link to the upper level.

Step 5: Altar

The altar is on the upper level. Collect your Light of Blessing. A chest near the waterfall in the upper area contains Opal — a gem associated with water energy that's useful for wet-climate elixirs.

Tips

  • Valve positioning in Step 1 is binary — left or right. The correct position is always whichever channel lacks wheel coverage
  • The platform in Step 2 must be centered precisely under the waterfall — off-center placement fails to engage the wheel
  • Underwater objects can be moved with Ultrahand — useful if components fall into channels
  • The pump in Step 4 must be activated by arrow before entering the lift channel — it doesn't activate on proximity
  • Sidon's Sage ability (water shield) is cosmetically satisfying to use in this shrine but mechanically optional
