Ukouh Shrine
Ukouh Shrine — Ability to Sneak
Location: Great Sky Island, first sky tutorial area Coordinates: (-1384, -1238, 1584) Type: Tutorial / Puzzle Shrine Difficulty: Easy
Overview
Ukouh Shrine is one of the four tutorial shrines on the Great Sky Island — the first major area of Tears of the Kingdom. It introduces the Ultrahand ability through a series of scaffolding, hook, and bridge-building puzzles. As one of the earliest shrines in the game, Ukouh is designed to make Ultrahand feel intuitive, guiding players through attach, rotate, and place mechanics that will underpin nearly every puzzle in the game. The Sky Island setting reinforces the wonder of TotK's world: floating stone platforms with open sky views in every direction, far above Hyrule below.
Preparation
- No gear required — this is the tutorial experience, designed for a fresh Link
- Ultrahand is given to Link before this shrine can be accessed
- No temperature, combat, or stamina hazards inside the shrine
- The Great Sky Island exterior is temperate with no hostile weather
- This shrine is best attempted with no expectations — let the environment teach naturally
Walkthrough
Step 1: The Hanging Hook
The first room introduces the hook mechanic: a wooden board hangs from a wall-mounted hook by a loop on one end. The gap ahead is too wide to cross without the board as a bridge. Use Ultrahand to grab the board, detach it from the hook, rotate it horizontally, and place it across the gap as a bridge. The board's length exactly spans the crossing. Walk across to the other side.
Step 2: Rope Bridge Construction
The second area has a longer gap and two board sections — neither long enough alone, but connected they span the distance. Pick up board one with Ultrahand and attach it end-to-end to board two. The attachment point glows when the pieces align correctly. Lower the combined bridge across the gap. Link can walk across the connected bridge. This step teaches the attach mechanic that is the foundation of all TotK construction.
Step 3: Hook Transfer
The third room presents a hook on the far wall and a crate with a loop on top hanging nearby. The exit door is above the far ledge — accessible only by climbing the crate if it's moved to the ledge. Use Ultrahand to move the crate across the gap and hang its loop on the far hook — the crate hangs against the far wall, creating a climbable surface. Climb the crate, grab the ledge, and proceed upward.
Step 4: Final Platform
The altar is on an elevated platform above the third room. A flat board is available to bridge the final gap between the hook-ledge and the altar platform. By now all three Ultrahand mechanics (pick up, attach, place) have been demonstrated. Construct the final bridge and cross to the altar.
Step 5: Altar
Collect your Light of Blessing. Your first of four on the Great Sky Island — three more shrines await. The chest in the corner contains Zonai Capsules with a Fan device inside — useful for the Sky Island puzzles ahead.
Tips
- The attach glow (pieces snapping together) is the key feedback indicator — always look for the golden glow before placing
- Rotating objects with Ultrahand uses the right stick — small adjustments are easier than full rotations
- The tutorial pacing is deliberate — don't rush to the next room until you feel comfortable with what you've done
- After completing Ukouh, Rauru speaks to Link — listen fully for lore context about the Sky Island and the next steps
- The view from the Great Sky Island at dawn is exceptional — one of TotK's most memorable early-game moments
