Sky Islands Guide — Complete Exploration Coverage
Sky Islands Guide — Complete Exploration
The Sky Islands are the floating platforms and archipelagos suspended above Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom. They hold exclusive shrines, Zonai Device stockpiles, armor sets, and unique challenges. This guide covers all major sky island regions and how to reach them.
How to Reach Sky Islands
Sky islands float at varying altitudes — from just above the surface to extreme heights above the clouds. Several methods exist for reaching them:
Method 1 — Skyview Towers (Best for Initial Access)
Each of the 15 Skyview Towers launches Link high into the air above its location. From the launch apex, you can glide to nearby sky islands. This is the primary intended method for first access.
Tips:
- Use Tulin's Gust at the apex of your launch to extend range dramatically
- The height you reach from each tower is fixed — some towers reach higher-altitude islands than others
- All 15 towers should be activated early — they reveal map sections and give sky access simultaneously
Method 2 — Recalled Debris
Look for falling rocks or platforms near sky island edges. Use Recall on them to reverse their path, riding them back up to the island above. This works for many mid-altitude islands that don't have direct tower access.
Method 3 — Zonai Fan Platforms / Hoverbike
Build a hoverbike (2 fans + steering stick) or a simple fan-powered platform. The hoverbike can fly to any altitude given sufficient battery. See the Battery Upgrades Guide for how to extend flight range.
Method 4 — Ascending (In Specific Cases)
Some sky islands are positioned directly above tall surface structures or mountains. Use Ascend through the ceiling of a cave roof to emerge on the island above, or climb a mountain near enough to glide across.
Method 5 — Cannon Launchers
Some sky island complexes have Zonai cannons that launch you toward higher platforms. Climb into the cannon cup and use Ultrahand to aim and fire.
Sky Island Regions
Great Sky Island (Tutorial Area)
Altitude: Medium (above Hyrule Castle area) Access: Starting location — you're here at the game's beginning What's here:
- All four tutorial shrines (Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, Recall)
- Temple of Time — story location
- Archaic Armor pieces (basic starting gear)
- Hot spring for heart regen
- Multiple cooking pots and mushroom-rich areas
Notes: You can return to Great Sky Island at any time via Paraglider + skyview tower + hoverbike. The temple is locked after the tutorial, but the island itself has some Korok Seed puzzles and ore deposits.
North Eldin Sky Archipelago
Altitude: High Access: Eldin Skyview Tower → glide northwest into the volcanic sky islands What's here:
- Igneo Talus Titan — elite boss, fire variant
- Several shrines including combat-trial types
- Dense Zonai Device Dispenser clusters
- Fire-element materials (Smotherwing Butterflies)
- Igneo Pebblit ore deposits
Hazard: Extreme heat. Bring Flamebreaker Armor or fireproof food before ascending.
Notable: The Eldin sky islands connect to the deeper volcanic sky chain to the north — some of the most vertical sky island exploration in the game.
Akkala Sky Archipelago (Ancient Citadel Area)
Altitude: Medium to High Access: Akkala Skyview Tower → glide north/northeast What's here:
- Valor Island — skydiving challenge for Glide Armor piece (Glide Tights)
- Several Zonai Device dispensers with large Charge drops
- Rare chest locations with Ancient Bow
- Multiple shrines
- Brightbloom Seed farming spots
Valor Island Challenge: The island requires skydiving through floating rings in sequence. Equip Glide Armor (if you have pieces) to improve control. Miss a ring and you restart.
Lanayru Sky Archipelago
Altitude: Medium Access: Lanayru Skyview Tower (near Zora's Domain) → glide east into the sky What's here:
- Courage Island — skydiving challenge for Glide Armor piece (Glide Shirt)
- Lightscale Trident-related sky location
- Zora-themed sky ruins
- Water-element critters and materials
Courage Island: Similar skydiving challenge to Valor Island. More complex ring pattern. Part of the full Glide Armor acquisition chain.
Faron Sky Archipelago
Altitude: Medium Access: Popla Foothills Skyview Tower (south Faron) → glide toward sky islands east/southeast What's here:
- Farosh's flight path passes through this region
- Multiple sky shrines
- Zonai device clusters
- Abundant Sky Fruit (used in some elixirs)
Gerudo Sky Archipelago (South Lomei Labyrinth Area)
Altitude: High Access: Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower → fly northwest, or rocket from the Gerudo Desert surface What's here:
- South Lomei Labyrinth — a massive maze sky island with the Barbarian Armor piece in the center
- Bravery Island — third Glide Armor piece (Glide Mask) skydiving challenge
- Rare chest with endgame equipment
- Lightning-element critters near Farosh's flight path
South Lomei Labyrinth: One of three Lomei Labyrinths. Navigate the maze to reach the central chamber with the Barbarian Armor chest. The labyrinth has multiple enemy encounters on its walls.
North Lomei Sky Island (Far North)
Altitude: Very High Access: Hebra Skyview Tower → fly north; or extend via hoverbike What's here:
- North Lomei Labyrinth — Barbarian Helm is in the center
- Cold-climate sky islands with ice materials
- Frostbite Scorchfish and Naydra-related sky items
Hazard: Extreme cold. Full Snowquill Armor or cold resistance Level 2 food required. The altitude adds wind turbulence — use Tulin's Gust carefully.

Efficient Sky Island Exploration Strategy
Activate all Skyview Towers first. Each tower reveals its sky island cluster on the map. Without activation, sky islands don't appear on the map even when you fly over them.
Use a sky island loop route. After unlocking the hoverbike, establish a circuit:
- Launch from Eldin Tower
- Hit Eldin Sky Archipelago (dispenser run)
- Fly northwest to Akkala sky islands
- Continue to Lomei Labyrinth if needed
- Return via fast travel to southern tower for Faron/Gerudo sky
Hoverbike + height. The hoverbike can reach any sky island without the altitude limitations of Skyview Towers. With 3–4 batteries, you can fly to islands that are inaccessible by tower alone.
Glide back to surface safely. From any sky island, you can simply leap off and glide down. Tulin's Gust doubles glide distance. With good positioning, you can glide from a sky island all the way to a surface stable or shrine for a free fast travel point.
Shrines on Sky Islands
Many sky island shrines are combat trials (defeating specific enemies) or Rauru's Blessing types (arrive and open the chest). They're generally shorter than surface shrines.
Sky island shrine strategy: Shrines on sky islands are often unlocked by completing a nearby challenge (defeating enemies on the island, solving a puzzle around the shrine). Read the shrine entrance description carefully — "Rauru's Blessing" means no puzzle, just open the chest.
