Snowquill Armor Guide — Rito Village Shop, Cold Resistance & Set Bonus
Snowquill Armor Guide — Cold Resistance for Hebra & High Altitude
The Snowquill Armor is TotK's essential cold-weather set — sold directly at Rito Village's clothing shop. Without it, the Hebra Mountains, Tabantha Snowfield, and Mount Lanayru summit deal constant cold damage. This guide covers purchase, upgrade, and when you actually need each tier of cold resistance.
Where to Buy Snowquill Armor
Shop: Brazen Beak — the clothing shop in Rito Village Location: Rito Village, northwest Hyrule (see Rito Village Guide for directions)
| Piece | Cost | |-------|------| | Snowquill Headdress | 650 rupees | | Snowquill Tunic | 500 rupees | | Snowquill Trousers | 800 rupees | | Full set | 1,950 rupees |
Priority buy order:
- Snowquill Tunic first (500r) — 1 piece already gives enough resistance for most Rito Village area exploration
- Snowquill Headdress (650r) — adds a second piece for moderate cold zones
- Snowquill Trousers (800r) — completes the set, unlocks set bonus
Cold Resistance Levels — What You Need Where
Cold Resistance stacks from armor pieces and food:
| Cold Level | What It Covers | |-----------|---------------| | Level 1 (1 piece) | Light cold (Rito Village area, Tabantha Frontier) | | Level 2 (2 pieces) | Moderate cold (lower Hebra Mountains, Tabantha Snowfield) | | Level 3 (full set ★★) | Severe cold (Hebra Peak summit, Mount Lanayru summit, blizzard weather) |
Supplementing with food:
- Spicy food (Warm Safflina, Sunshroom meals) adds 1-2 Cold Resistance levels temporarily
- Spicy Elixir (Warm Darner critter + monster part) — short duration, useful as backup
- Combining armor + food lets 1-2 pieces of Snowquill cover more territory than the pieces alone
Set Bonus — Unfreezable
At ★★ (all 3 pieces upgraded to ★★):
- Unfreezable — Ice attacks from enemies cannot freeze Link
Why this matters:
- Ice Keese, Ice-Breath Lizalfos, White Bokoblins, and Frost Gleeoks all have freeze attacks
- Without the set bonus, a freeze hit is a death sentence — you're immobile while enemies follow up
- With Unfreezable: ice attacks still deal damage but don't freeze Link at all
Highly recommended for: Frost Gleeok fights (all 3 heads have freeze attacks), upper Hebra Lynel (White-Maned with ice arrows), and any cold-biome enemy encounter.
Upgrade Materials
Great Fairy required for upgrades.
| Level | Materials per piece | |-------|-------------------| | ★ | 3× Bokoblin Fang, 5× Chuchu Jelly | | ★★ | 3× Red Chuchu Jelly, 3× White Chuchu Jelly | | ★★★ | 4× Icy Lizalfos Horn, 4× Icy Lizalfos Tail | | ★★★★ | 4× Frost Gleeok Horn, 4× Blizzrobe Horn |
Most important upgrade milestone: ★★ — unlocks the Unfreezable set bonus. Priority before ★★★ or ★★★★.
Frost Gleeok Horn (★★★★): Requires defeating Frost Gleeoks. Fixed spawn in Hebra Mountains. See Gleeok Guide for Frost Gleeok location and fight strategy.
Snowquill Armor vs Spicy Elixirs — When to Use Each
| Situation | Recommendation | |-----------|---------------| | Just passing through cold zone quickly | Spicy Elixir | | Extended Hebra exploration | Snowquill Armor (2+ pieces) | | Hebra Peak / Mount Lanayru summit | Full Snowquill set or set + Spicy food | | Frost Gleeok fight | Full Snowquill ★★ for freeze immunity | | Tabantha Snowfield farming run | 2 pieces minimum |
Cold Resistance Alternatives
If you haven't reached Rito Village yet:
Temporary cold resistance sources:
- Warm Doublet (BotW heirloom — minor, may not be in TotK)
- Spicy food: Warm Safflina Sauté, Spicy Pepper Seafood — each gives 5-15 min resistance
- Spicy Elixir: Warm Darner + any monster part — quick, cheap, accessible
Finding Warm Darner: The Warm Darner dragonfly lives near the border of warm and cold biomes — east of Death Mountain, near Eldin/Akkala border caves.
Quick Tips
- Buy Tunic first, explore, then buy the rest — 500 rupees for the Tunic is cheap; explore Rito Village area with just the Tunic equipped while farming the extra 1,450r for the other pieces.
- Rito Village = first cold region — Snowquill Armor is mandatory before Hebra. Don't try to explore Hebra Mountains with only Spicy Elixirs — the timers run out mid-climb.
- ★★ before ★★★ — getting all 3 pieces to ★★ (Unfreezable bonus) is more valuable than pushing one piece to ★★★. Do it in order.
- Check weather for cold modifier — blizzard weather in Hebra adds an extra cold damage tier. During blizzards, even ★★ Snowquill + food might not be enough for the summit. Wait out blizzards at a cave entrance.
- Mount Lanayru needs cold too — Snowquill isn't only for Hebra. The Spring of Wisdom at Mount Lanayru's summit is a cold damage zone. Bring the set.
