Tarrey Town Complete Guide — Tears of the Kingdom

Tarrey Town is a town built from scratch in the TotK timeline, continuing from Breath of the Wild's iconic "From the Ground Up" questline. Located on a small island in Akkala Lake northeast of Hyrule, it serves as the primary Akkala region hub — with unique shops, a functional inn, and the only gem merchant (Hagie) who buys rare gems at premium prices.

Location

Tarrey Town sits on Lake Akkala island (~3741, 1624, 0135), accessible by:

  1. Akkala Bridge — the road bridge from the southeast Akkala Citadel area
  2. Paraglider — glide from the Akkala Stable southeast of the lake

The "From the Ground Up" Questline

In TotK, Tarrey Town already exists from Breath of the Wild but needs expansion for several new businesses. Speak to Hudson (the construction foreman) to continue the town's development.

Quest steps:

  1. Bring Hudson building materials: Wood Bundles × 10 (harvest trees with an axe or bomb)
  2. Hudson recruits a gem merchant (Hagie) — bring specific gems to invite him
  3. Expand the general store: bring 5 Pumpkins and 5 Hylian Tomatoes
  4. Final expansion: bring 3 pieces of Zonai construction material

Reward: Full Tarrey Town with all shops active + Hudson gives Link a Royal Claymore as a thank-you.

Tarrey Town Shops (Post-Questline)

Hagie's Gem Shop (Best Gem Prices)

Hagie is TotK's highest-paying gem buyer. His prices exceed those of standard shops:

| Gem | Standard Sell | Hagie Price | |-----|--------------|-------------| | Amber | 10 | 30 | | Opal | 60 | 80 | | Topaz | 180 | 200 | | Ruby | 210 | 230 | | Sapphire | 260 | 280 | | Diamond | 500 | 600 |

Always sell diamonds to Hagie. The 100-rupee premium per diamond is significant — 10 diamonds = 1,000 extra rupees compared to other vendors.

Enchanted (Armor Shop)

Stock: Mid-tier armor sets. Includes the Soldier Armor (useful for combat builds) and occasionally rotating stock of rare armor pieces.

General Store

Stock: Standard cooking ingredients, arrows, torches.

Inn

Cost: 20 rupees per night. Full HP restore.

Tarrey Town Well

Contents: Korok Seed (rock balance puzzle), Chest: Soldier's Claymore

Akkala Lake Activities

From Tarrey Town, the lake provides:

  • Chillfin Trout fishing — the lake has Chillfin Trout (cold-resist ingredient, 8+ per visit)
  • Staminoka Bass fishing — Staminoka Bass in the deeper sections (stamina-restore ingredient)
  • Korok Seed on the lake — a pinwheel Korok on the eastern shore

Tarrey Town is the most profitable gem-selling location in the game. Sell all Diamonds and premium gems here before they accumulate — the Hagie premium adds up significantly over a full playthrough.

From the Ground Up — Detailed Quest Walkthrough

The "From the Ground Up" questline in TotK is a returning side quest from BotW. Hudson's construction project in TotK is a follow-on: Tarrey Town already exists as a small settlement, but Hudson wants to expand it into a proper hub.

Initiating the quest: Talk to Hudson at the construction site on the island. He's visibly exhausted and explains that the town needs more specialized residents to function as a real community.

Stage 1 — Timber and Foundation

Hudson requests 10 Wood Bundles to build additional structures. Collect them by:

  • Cutting any tree with a two-handed weapon or bomb (yields 3 Wood per tree)
  • Checking your inventory — Wood Bundles accumulate passively throughout exploration
  • The forest south of Akkala Citadel ruins has dense tree coverage within a 5-minute walk

Shortcut: If you have 30+ Wood from normal play, this step completes immediately.

Stage 2 — The Gem Merchant

Hudson needs a specialist who deals in rare gems. He's heard of Hagie, a traveling merchant, and asks you to track him down. Hagie's location varies — he's found at one of several stable areas in the Eldin or Akkala regions. Check Eldin Stable and Foothill Stable areas at daytime.

When found, Hagie agrees to move to Tarrey Town if you bring him a Diamond as a good-faith gesture. The diamond simply needs to be in your inventory during the conversation — it doesn't transfer permanently.

Stage 3 — General Store Restocking

The existing general store needs fresh produce to expand its inventory. Bring:

  • 5 Pumpkins (found in Kakariko Village gardens or purchased from traveling merchants)
  • 5 Hylian Tomatoes (available from same sources)

After delivery, the store's inventory expands to include cooking staples, arrow types, and mid-tier materials.

Stage 4 — Zonai Materials

The final expansion requires 3 Zonai Devices (any type of capsule — fans, wheels, or construct cores all qualify). These are easily obtained from Zonai dispensers across the Great Sky Island or Eldin sky islands.

Completion reward: Hudson presents Link with a Royal Claymore (weapon power 52, long reach) and the town officially opens all facilities.

Hagie's Gem Shop — Full Pricing Guide

Hagie's premium prices make Tarrey Town the definitive gem-selling destination. Sell nothing until you've visited him:

| Gem | Standard Price | Hagie Price | Bonus Per Gem | |-----|---------------|-------------|--------------| | Amber | 10 | 30 | +20 | | Opal | 60 | 80 | +20 | | Flint | 2 | 2 | +0 (no bonus) | | Luminous Stone | 70 | 100 | +30 | | Topaz | 180 | 200 | +20 | | Ruby | 210 | 230 | +20 | | Sapphire | 260 | 280 | +20 | | Diamond | 500 | 600 | +100 |

Priority sell order: Diamonds first (largest absolute bonus), then Luminous Stones, then Rubies and Sapphires. Amber and Opal premiums are modest — sell them elsewhere if Tarrey Town is out of route.

Rupee math: If you're carrying 20 Diamonds, selling at Hagie vs. any other vendor = +2,000 rupees. For late-game players with 50+ Diamonds stockpiled, the difference can exceed 5,000 rupees per sell session.

Armor Shop — Enchanted

Tarrey Town's armor shop stocks a rotating selection. Confirmed permanent stock includes:

| Item | Cost | Notes | |------|------|-------| | Soldier's Armor | 500 | Base set, strong defense for early-mid game | | Soldier's Helm | 450 | Pairs with Soldier's Set | | Soldier's Greaves | 450 | Full set bonus: +Att Up when low on health | | Dark Tunic | varies | Occasionally in stock, Dark Set piece |

The Soldier's Set is worth buying if you haven't found the chest version. Its full set bonus (Attack Up when hearts are low) makes it useful for aggressive combat styles.

Tarrey Town as Akkala Base

Tarrey Town is the only settlement on the eastern Akkala side of the map. For players doing Akkala content, it serves as:

  • Rest point between Skull Lake and Death Caldera explorations
  • Fast travel hub for eastern Hyrule once the shrine near it is activated
  • Poe exchange via the Bargainer Statue in the adjacent Depths entrance at Akkala Ancient Tech Lab area
  • Fish + cooking platform with the lake directly accessible and a campfire nearby

Akkala Shrine nearby: Timawak Shrine is close to the Tarrey Town fast travel point. Activating it before heading into the Depths makes re-entry significantly faster.

Mattison's Independence — Side Quest

Rhondson and Hudson's daughter Mattison has reached adulthood and wants to travel to Gerudo Town to connect with her Gerudo heritage (she's half-Gerudo through Rhondson). The questline involves:

  1. Speak to Hudson — he's conflicted about Mattison leaving
  2. Find Mattison in the town square and hear her plans
  3. Help her pack and prepare for the journey (bring 3 Gerudo-region materials or food from Gerudo Desert as a farewell gift)
  4. Accompany Mattison to the Akkala Bridge, where Hudson gives a final send-off

Quest reward: Rhondson's Trade Shop expands its inventory rotation. Hudson opens up with extended dialogue about building Tarrey Town's next phase. The quest is a short emotional beat — no combat, pure story — and gives good insight into how the founding families of Tarrey Town have evolved since BotW.

Nearby Shrines

| Shrine | Distance | Type | Notes | |--------|----------|------|-------| | Timawak Shrine | ~400m southwest | Rauru's Blessing | Fast travel anchor for Depths entry | | Rasiwak Shrine | ~600m northwest | Puzzle | En route from Akkala Citadel ruins | | Isisim Shrine | ~800m east | Combat | Overlooks Lake Akkala eastern shore |

Timawak Shrine is the highest priority activation here — it sits close to the Depths chasm near Akkala Ancient Tech Lab and makes future Depths runs from this corner of the map significantly faster.

Cooking at Tarrey Town

The campfire by the lake is the primary cooking station. Tarrey Town is one of the best locations in Akkala for ingredient availability:

Recommended Akkala-region recipes (cooked at Tarrey Town campfire):

| Dish | Ingredients | Effect | Hearts | |------|-------------|--------|--------| | Seafood Skewer | Chillfin Trout × 3 | Cold resistance (3 min) | 3–5 | | Stamina-restore dish | Staminoka Bass × 3 | Stamina wheel extension | 3–4 | | Hearty Elixir | Hearty Lizard + Bokoblin Guts | Full heal + yellow hearts | — | | Mighty Fish Skewer | Mighty Carp + Hearty Bass | Attack Up + hearts | 5+ |

Fishing from the dock: Chillfin Trout and Staminoka Bass are both available from Akkala Lake without a rod — throw a Bomb Flower into deeper water sections to stun surface fish, then collect. 8–12 fish per session is typical without any equipment investment.

Akkala Tech Lab Connection

The Akkala Ancient Tech Lab is 600 meters northwest of Tarrey Town on the plateau. In TotK it's partially operational and contains:

  • A Depths chasm with a nearby Lightroot — ideal for starting eastern Depths runs
  • Autobuild schematics cached in a nearby chest (regional variant)
  • NPC reference to the Guardian manufacturing history from BotW

Tarrey Town functions well as a base camp for clearing both the Akkala Depths zone and the Tech Lab area in the same exploration session.

Hudson and the Continuity from BotW

For players who completed "From the Ground Up" in Breath of the Wild: Tarrey Town exists in TotK because your BotW efforts canonically succeeded. Hudson and Rhondson are still married. Their daughter Mattison has grown up here and is preparing to leave for Gerudo Town — the next chapter in the family the player helped create.

The human continuity from BotW to TotK is most visible at Tarrey Town. This is the same family, same town, 5 years later. Hudson's weariness is the weariness of a man who built something real and is watching it become its own thing, independent of him. It's one of TotK's quieter emotional notes and rewards players who remember the BotW questline.
