Thunderhead Isles Guide — Tears of the Kingdom

The Thunderhead Isles are a cluster of sky islands permanently shrouded in a violent thunderstorm above the Faron region. Lightning strikes constantly, the cloud cover is impenetrable from below, and the islands are invisible until Link ascends above the storm layer. Despite the danger, Thunderhead Isles contain some of the game's best sky island rewards — a rare chest cache, a hidden shrine, and Farosh the electric dragon's primary daytime patrol zone.

Finding the Thunderhead Isles

Location: Above Faron region, approximately coordinates (1370, -3630, 1200) — directly above the Dracozu River delta and Lake Floria area.

Access options:

  1. Faron Skyview Tower launch — Launch from the Faron Skyview Tower and immediately deploy Paraglider. Fly southeast and ascend. You'll enter the storm clouds — visibility drops to zero inside the cloud.
  2. Ascend through a sky island — If you can reach the base of a Thunderhead island (via Zonai rockets from high Faron terrain), use Ascend to pass through the island floor.
  3. Farosh farming approach — Farosh the electric dragon exits the storm periodically at Lake Floria level (approximately 17:00–19:00). Following Farosh as it descends and re-ascending on the updraft carries Link directly into the Thunderhead zone.

Warning: The thunderstorm applies constant shock damage if Link is holding metal weapons or wearing armor with metal components. Either:

  • Wear Rubber Armor (full set negates shock immunity)
  • Store metal weapons in your inventory and fight with non-conductive items while inside

Navigating the Storm Layer

Visibility inside the cloud: Near zero. The storm interior is white fog — you cannot see more than 10 meters. The sun compass (top of screen) disappears. Navigate by:

  • Using the minimap (still works inside clouds)
  • Following Farosh's position if it's inside the storm
  • Memory of island layout after first exploration

Lightning mechanics inside Thunderhead:

  • Lightning strikes continuously — 1 strike every 8–12 seconds
  • Metal objects attract lightning (metal weapons in hand = guaranteed hit when lightning triggers)
  • Rubber Armor completely negates lightning damage
  • Non-metal Fused weapons (stone, bone, wood) don't attract strikes

The storm does NOT affect:

  • Paraglider control
  • Zonai device function
  • Bow firing (non-metal bows are safe)

Island Layout

Thunderhead Isles consists of 6 connected floating platforms at various altitudes within the storm cloud layer.

Platform 1 — Entry Ledge (lowest)

The first platform accessible from below. Has 2 Aerocuda enemies and 3 chests with standard loot (rupees, arrows, materials). The entry point for all routes into the Thunderhead.

Key feature: Large updraft on the east side — use it to gain altitude for reaching Platform 3 directly.

Platform 2 — Observation Ring

A circular ring platform with no enemies but an exceptional viewpoint above the storm when the clouds briefly thin. Contains a Korok Seed puzzle (rock weight balance on the ring's south arm).

Chest: Contains a Large Zonai Charge (fills entire battery if used).

Platform 3 — Central Hub (largest platform)

The main island. Contains a Stone Talus boss, 3 treasure chests, and a Bokoblin camp (4 Blue Bokoblins + 1 Black). The Stone Talus here has a significant Ore Deposit on its back — hit the deposit during the fight for mid-battle ore collection.

Chests:

  • Chest 1: Eightfold Longblade (38 base attack — strong early weapon)
  • Chest 2: Opal × 5
  • Chest 3: 100 rupees

Stone Talus drops: Diamond (80% chance), Ruby (60%), 3× Flint

Platform 4 — Farosh Rest Ledge

A narrow ledge where Farosh perches when resting inside the storm (rare — approximately 10% of Blood Moon cycles). When Farosh rests here, all dragon parts are harvestable without combat: walk up and strike the specific body part you need.

Normal farming: Farosh charges when approached normally — you must ride the wind and time your arrow shots. The Rest Ledge method is passive.

Platform loot: 2 chests — Topaz × 3, and a Rubber Helm (Shock Resistance +1).

Platform 5 — Construct Research Station

A small platform with an intact Zonai research station — 4 Zonai Dispenser machines (the only sky-island Dispenser cluster in this area) and a Soldier Construct III guard.

Dispensers: Each gives 1–3 random Zonai devices. Common drops: Fans, Springs, Rockets, Flame Emitters. Rare drop: Wing (glider component).

The station chest: Contains a Zonai Capsule Bundle — 5 random devices, 20% chance for a Rocket.

Platform 6 — Hidden Shrine Platform (top)

The highest platform, accessible only by using Zonai rockets or stacking updrafts. Contains the Mayosojow Shrine — a Rauru's Blessing (world trial) shrine. The trial was reaching this altitude inside the storm.

Shrine chest: Contains a Stormy-Blue Dye Stone — one of the rarest cosmetic materials, used at the Hateno Dye Shop for the Stormy Blue outfit color.

Shrine reward: Light of Blessing (same as all Rauru's Blessings — the approach was the challenge).

Farosh Farming at Thunderhead Isles

Farosh the electric dragon is intimately connected to the Thunderhead Isles — the storm is partially attributed to Farosh's presence. Farosh emerges from the storm daily:

  • Sunrise spawn: Farosh exits at Lake Hylia (5:00 game time) heading northeast — this is the primary farming window below the storm
  • Midday patrol: Farosh re-enters the Thunderhead around 10:00–11:00 and rests in the storm until dusk
  • Evening exit: Farosh exits again near Lake Floria (17:00–18:00) before returning underground via a chasm

Inside the storm farming: Farosh flies slower inside the storm cloud. If you can match altitude and glide alongside Farosh, you have extended time windows to:

  • Strike the horn for Farosh's Horn Shard (+25 Fuse, applies electric)
  • Strike the scales for Farosh Scale (lightning armor upgrade material)
  • Strike the claws for Farosh Claw (various recipe uses)
  • Strike the tail for Farosh Tail (rare drop, required for armor tier 4)

Farosh respawn: Farosh yields 1 part per in-game day. If you farm a part at sunrise, wait 24 in-game hours (a full sleep cycle) before the next part is available.

Thunderhead Isles Efficiency Tips

One-session completion: The entire Thunderhead Isles can be cleared in 25–35 minutes once you have:

  • Rubber Armor (no shock damage management)
  • 3 strong weapons (Stone Talus fight + Bokoblin camp)
  • Zonai rockets (2–3 for Platform 6 ascent)

Pairing with Farosh farming: Enter Thunderhead at 16:00 game time — you'll arrive as Farosh begins its evening exit. Farm Farosh's evening exit (15 minutes), then clear all 6 platforms before the next sunrise.

Blood Moon alignment: Blood Moon respawns the Stone Talus, the Bokoblin camp, the Aerocuda, and all Zonai Dispensers. Plan a Thunderhead run every Blood Moon for the Diamond drop and Dispenser reload.

The Thunderhead Isles are one of TotK's most atmospheric locations — a perpetual lightning storm hiding rare treasures and Farosh's secret resting place. The Rubber Armor turns this from dangerous to routine. Go in prepared and strip it clean every Blood Moon.
