Time of Day Guide — Day vs. Night in TotK
Time of Day Guide — Day vs. Night
Tears of the Kingdom has a full day-night cycle that changes enemy behavior, available activities, NPC schedules, resource spawns, and event triggers. Understanding how to manipulate time and what to do at specific hours is one of the game's underrated efficiency mechanics.
The In-Game Clock
TotK's day is divided into 24 in-game hours. One real-time minute = approximately one in-game hour at normal gameplay pace. You can check the current time by opening the map screen — time is displayed in the top-right corner.
Key time markers:
- 06:00 (Dawn) — enemies begin return patrols; passive monsters become aggressive again
- 12:00 (Noon) — peak daylight; no special effects
- 17:00 (Sunset) — Aerocuda and Keese begin spawning near camps
- 21:00 (Night start) — nocturnal enemies fully active; Stal enemies begin emerging
- 24:00 (Midnight) — Blood Moon window opens (if enough time has passed)
- 06:00 (Dawn) — Stal enemies dissolve; Blood Moon ends if active
Day — Best Activities
Mining & Exploration
- Ore nodes are visible at all times but shadows are minimal at noon — easier to spot
- Non-aggressive animals (deer, foxes, horses) are most active and plentiful during daytime
- NPC schedules: merchants are open, traveling vendors are on roads
Building & Traversal
- Daytime provides full visibility for Ultrahand construction — ideal for complex builds
- Wind patterns on sky islands are consistent during day hours
- Updrafts from volcanic regions are strongest between 10:00-14:00
Horse Activities
- All horse-related activities (Mounted Archery, Pony Points registrations) operate during daylight only
- NPCs at stables are most active and interactive from 08:00-20:00
Night — Best Activities
Stal Enemy Farming
Stal enemies only spawn at night:
- Stalkoblin — emerge from the ground around Bokoblin camps after dark
- Stalizalfos — appear near water and ruins after 21:00
- Stalhorse — rideable skeleton horse, only available at night in specific locations
Night farming value: Stalkoblin skulls and Stalizalfos tails are valuable cooking ingredients (monster parts) for certain elixirs. Night farming is the only way to gather these.
Gloom Hands Encounters
Gloom Hands only appear at specific locations at night (or in certain dungeon areas regardless of time). Night patrol of Hyrule Castle and major ruins increases encounter rate.
Star Fragments
Star Fragments fall from the sky every night — look for shooting stars between 21:00-05:00. The streak ends with a ground impact point you can fly toward to collect. One Fragment per night maximum, but they're rare (approximately 1-in-5 chance per night).
Star Fragment tips:
- Stand on high ground at 21:00-22:00 for the best sky visibility
- Mark the impact point with a map pin immediately when you see the streak
- Star Fragments sell for 200 Rupees each OR are used for specific Great Fairy upgrades
Night-Exclusive Resource Drops
- Blupee encounters — the spirit deer that drops Rupees when hit are most common at night
- Sunset Firefly — only available from 20:00-06:00; needed for specific crafting
- Hot-Footed Frog — more active at night in swampy areas
Controlling In-Game Time
Resting at Campfires / Inns
The primary method of time advancement:
- Campfire rest: Press A when near a lit campfire → choose Morning, Noon, or Night
- Inn rest: Pay 20-80 Rupees depending on location → same time options plus Yellow Heart bonus
- Cooking pot rest: Some cooking spots allow rest with same mechanic
Use cases:
- Skip to Night for Stal farming or Star Fragments
- Skip to Morning for fresh enemy respawns in camps you cleared
- Skip to reset to avoid waiting
Blood Moon Timing
Blood Moons trigger when enough gameplay time has passed (approximately 7 real-time hours of active play). You can force a Blood Moon via:
- Akkala Ancient Tech Lab — Cherry the ancient oven has a mechanic to trigger Blood Moon
- Extended rest looping — repeatedly sleeping at an inn shifts the clock rapidly
Blood Moon effects:
- All enemies respawn
- All ore nodes respawn
- All minibosses respawn (Talus, Hinox, Molduga)
- NOT respawned: treasures, shrines, collectibles, static NPCs
Enemy Behavior at Night
| Enemy | Night Behavior | Notes | |-------|---------------|-------| | Bokoblin | More aggressive, larger patrol radius | Lit torches at camps | | Lizalfos | Active swimmers (harder to avoid) | Move faster in water at night | | Keese | Swarm more frequently | Avoid camp fires to reduce Keese | | Aerocuda | Patrol routes extended | Higher altitude spawns | | Stal variants | Only spawn at night | Dissolve at dawn | | Gloom Hands | Appear at specific night locations | Avoid until endgame-ready | | Yiga Clan | Active both day and night | Disguise detection works same |
NPC Schedules
Most NPCs have day/night routines:
- Merchants — close at night, reopen at dawn. Arriving at midnight means closed shop.
- Traveling NPCs — road vendors camp at night; approach their fire camp for trades
- Village NPCs — remain home at night, accessible during day only for certain quests
- Stable staff — 24/7 operation (stables never close)
Time of Day Combat Tips
- Sneak attacks at night are easier — enemy sight ranges are slightly reduced in low light
- Fire-lit camps at night signal enemy locations from far distance — useful for planning routes
- Rain starts more frequently around midnight in most regions — avoid fire-based builds during rain
- Thunderstorms on peak Hebra and Gerudo are more common at night — unequip metal armor/weapons
Sunrise and Sunset Events
- Sunrise (06:00): Stal enemies collapse and dissolve — this kills any Stalhorse you were riding
- Sunset (17:00-18:00): NPCs in villages begin indoor routines — some quest triggers only activate at sunset
- Blood Moon (midnight): The sky turns red, Ganondorf appears briefly in the sky narrative shot, enemies respawn in a red flash — distinctive visual cue
