Well Extended Guide — Every Village Well, Hidden Rewards & Secrets
Well Extended Guide — Every Hidden Underground Chamber
TotK adds a well system — small climbable wells in villages and towns that lead to underground chambers beneath the surface. Each well holds hidden chests, Koroks, sometimes enemies, and occasionally unique items not found above ground. This guide covers every well and its contents.
How Wells Work
Access: Interact with a well (the round stone opening) → choice to enter or not → drop down
Inside a well: A small underground chamber, usually 3–8 meters below the surface. Contains:
- At minimum: 1–2 chests
- Often: 1 Korok seed
- Sometimes: enemies (Horriblin, Like Like, Keese)
- Occasionally: unique armor pieces or rare materials
Exit: Climb back up the rope/ladder inside the well, or use Ascend (aim upward through the solid floor if close enough to the surface).
Village Wells
Lookout Landing Well
Location: Lookout Landing, the main hub settlement
Contents:
- Basic chest (arrows or common material)
- Korok seed hidden in a rock puzzle
- Small cave connection to the south
Worth visiting: Yes — Lookout Landing well is one of the first accessible wells. Good for establishing the pattern.
Kakariko Village Well
Location: Central Kakariko Village
Contents:
- 2 chests (weapons, sometimes armor)
- Korok seed
- Horriblin (1–2 inside)
Notable: One of the deeper wells — the chamber is larger than most. The chests have higher-tier loot than standard wells.
Hateno Village Well
Location: Hateno Village, East Necluda
Contents:
- Chest with a mid-tier weapon
- Unique material (sometimes a rare gem)
- Small enemy (Keese or Like Like)
Secret: The Hateno well connects to a small tunnel that leads toward the farming area underneath. Explore the tunnel for a second hidden chest.
Zora's Domain Well
Location: Inside Zora's Domain throne room area
Contents:
- Chest with a high-tier item (Royal weapon or Zora-themed gear)
- Korok seed
Access challenge: Water fills part of the well. Use the Zora Armor dive mechanic to reach the lower chamber.
Rito Village Well
Location: Rito Village lower platform
Contents:
- Chest
- Windy tunnel (leads to a second chamber below)
Access: Rito Village is built on a stone pillar — the well leads surprisingly deep.
Gerudo Town Well
Location: Inside Gerudo Town
Contents:
- Chest with desert-region weapon or Gerudo material
- Moonlight Scimitar (sometimes — rare find)
- Sand-Seal carving Korok
Note: Gerudo Town well is one of the most valuable — the Moonlight Scimitar or equivalent is a strong regional weapon.
Tarrey Town Well
Location: Tarrey Town (after building is complete)
Contents:
- Chest added as the town is rebuilt
- Material relevant to the town-building questline
Availability: Only accessible after Tarrey Town has some construction complete.
Lurelin Village Well
Location: Lurelin Village (after restoration)
Contents:
- Chest with coastal materials (Hearty ingredient sometimes)
- Korok puzzle at the bottom
Hidden Items by Well Quality
Basic wells: 1 chest with common weapons (5–15 attack range) or 20–50 rupees.
Mid-tier wells: 2 chests with better weapons (15–30 attack range) or ore gems.
Top-tier wells (Kakariko, Gerudo, Zora): 2–3 chests, possibly Korok seed, rare weapon or armor piece.
Well Combat
Some wells have enemies:
| Enemy Type | Well | |-----------|------| | Keese | Most wells (ceiling dwellers) | | Like Like | Mid-to-large wells (block path to chest) | | Horriblin | Kakariko well, some others | | Chu Jelly | Some wells have Chuchu clusters |
Combat in wells is tight quarters — spin attacks and AoE are less reliable. Arrow combat or quick melee preferred.
Secrets Beyond the Wells
Well Tunnels
Some wells connect to broader underground cavern systems:
- Hateno well → extended tunnel → second chamber
- Some wells near shrines have passages → reach the shrine's Depths entry from the well
Exploration tip: After collecting the obvious chest, check all walls for dark passages or breakable rocks indicating tunnels.
Well Ascend Shortcut
If you're in a well and need to exit fast:
- Use Ascend ability → aim upward at the well ceiling
- Ascend takes you directly back to the surface
- Much faster than climbing the ladder/rope
Quick Tips
- Check every well in every village — well contents are modest but cumulative. Each village visit should include the well. 5 minutes per village, 2–3 items per well = significant loot over a full playthrough.
- Fight the enemies first — Like Likes in tight well spaces are dangerous. Clear them before collecting chests or they may swallow your shield while you're distracted.
- Ascend to exit quickly — you don't have to climb the rope. Ascend from the well floor → surface in 2 seconds. Faster and conserves stamina.
- Well Koroks are easy seeds — rock puzzles in wells are the simplest Korok type. Always check the floor for out-of-place rocks or rock circles — most Koroks in wells are of this type.
- Gerudo Town well after quest completion — the Gerudo Town well is more rewarding after the town's main quests are complete (infiltration quest, Riju's questline). Some items only appear post-quest.
