Zonai Charge Farming Guide — Energy Cell & Device Power
Zonai Charges are the battery fuel for Zonai devices — fans, rockets, flame emitters, cannons, and every vehicle component that makes TotK's building system work. Running out mid-flight or mid-build is one of the most frustrating resource problems in the game. This guide covers every farming method, efficiency rankings, and how to permanently expand your Energy Cell through upgrades.
Zonai Charge Types
| Item | Effect | |------|--------| | Zonai Charge (Small) | Restores 1 battery segment of the Energy Cell | | Large Zonai Charge | Restores the entire Energy Cell instantly |
Large Zonai Charges are the priority target — they refill everything instantly and are dramatically more efficient per inventory slot than carrying stacks of small charges. Prioritize farming Large Charges whenever possible.
Energy Cell Basics
Your Energy Cell starts at 3 segments (earned through Great Sky Island progression). Power draw by device type:
- Low draw: Fans, Steering Sticks (passive minimal drain)
- Medium draw: Flame Emitters, Cannons, Portable Pots
- High draw: Rockets, Homing Carts at full boost, multiple simultaneous active devices
The Energy Cell recharges automatically when no Zonai devices are consuming power. The recharge rate is fixed — you cannot accelerate it. The permanent solution to Energy Cell limitations is upgrading the cell itself at Crystal Refineries.
Method 1 — Construct Enemy Farming (Direct Drops)
Every Construct enemy has a chance to drop Zonai Charges on death:
| Enemy | Drop Rate / Quantity | |-------|---------------------| | Construct I | Zonai Charge (small) ~40% drop rate | | Soldier Construct II | Small × 1-2, ~50% drop rate | | Captain Construct IV | Small × 2-3, ~70% drop rate + occasional Large | | Flux Construct I/II/III | Large Zonai Charge guaranteed + multiple small |
Best Construct Farming Locations
Depths camps:
- Central Depths Crossroads Base — 10 Constructs (6 Construct I, 3 Soldier II, 1 Captain IV), yields ~8–12 Charges per clear
- Northern Eldin Mine Garrison — 14 Constructs, the densest Construct camp in the Depths; yields 12–18 Charges per clear
- Gerudo Western Gate Checkpoint — 7 Constructs, fast clear, good routing stop
Sky Islands:
- Akkala Sky Archipelago — large networks with Construct patrols and permanent camps
- Lanayru Sky Archipelago — extensive eastern Sky Island cluster with multiple Construct variants
- Necluda Sky Islands — medium density, accessible from the Necluda Skyview Tower
All Constructs respawn after every Blood Moon — time clears to the Blood Moon cycle for maximum efficiency.
Method 2 — Flux Construct Farming (Best Single Source)
Flux Constructs drop the largest single-encounter Charge yield in the game. Each defeat guarantees:
- Large Zonai Charge × 1-2
- Small Zonai Charge × 3-5
- Strong Construct Horn (bonus fuse material)
Flux Construct Locations
| Location | Type | Region | |----------|------|--------| | Great Sky Island (tutorial) | Flux Construct I | Sky | | Gerudo Highlands Sky Island | Flux Construct I | Sky | | Necluda Sky Island | Flux Construct II | Sky | | Central Sky Island cluster | Flux Construct II | Sky | | Gerudo Depths | Flux Construct III | Depths | | Faron Depths | Flux Construct III | Depths |
Fastest route: The two Flux Construct III encounters in the Depths (Gerudo and Faron) each drop 2 Large Charges guaranteed — that's 4 full Energy Cell refills from a single combat loop. Add Construct camp clears during transit and one Depths circuit yields 8–12 Large Charges.
Blood Moon timing: Position at a Flux Construct spawn just before a Blood Moon triggers. When midnight hits, the Construct immediately respawns — defeat it again with zero travel time wasted.
Method 3 — Zonai Device Dispensers (Sky Islands)
Zonai Device Dispensers are the ring-shaped structures on Sky Islands. Feed them Zonaite (or Zonai Balls depending on dispenser type) and they dispense randomized Zonai devices and materials including:
- Zonai Charges (small) — common output
- Large Zonai Charges — rare output (~15% chance per dispense)
- Devices (fans, rockets, wings, construct heads, etc.)
Best Dispenser Locations
- Great Sky Island — 3 dispensers accessible immediately after the tutorial area
- Sky Archipelago above Eldin — 4 dispensers in a compact cluster
- Wellspring Island (Lanayru sky) — 3 dispensers near the Zora's Domain sky area
- Thunderhead Isles — 2 dispensers; requires thunder-resistant gear or elixir
Efficiency note: Dispensers are random — for guaranteed Large Charge output, Flux Construct farming and Depths mining are more reliable. Use dispensers primarily to convert excess Zonaite into device components while you're already on a Sky Island.
Method 4 — Depths Zonaite Mining + Crystal Refinery Conversion
Zonaite ore mined in the Depths converts to Zonai Charges at Crystal Refineries:
| Conversion | Rate | |------------|------| | 3 Zonaite → 1 Zonai Charge (small) | Standard | | 1 Large Zonaite → 1 Large Zonai Charge | Standard | | Bulk Zonaite → Crystallized Charges | For Energy Cell upgrades |
Best Zonaite Farming Locations
- Triple Frox Basin (Necluda Depths) — defeat 3 Frox, then mine all exposed ore nodes; yields Large Zonaite × 12+ per Blood Moon
- Northern Eldin Mine — richest single ore deposit cluster in the game once the garrison is cleared
- Obsidian Frox encounters — each Obsidian Frox (2 in the Depths) drops Large Zonaite × 8 on death plus mineable ore from the corpse
Crystal Refinery locations: One refinery per major Depths region. The Central Depths refinery at the Great Abandoned Central Mine is the most accessible — near the Nisoij Lightroot area.
Mining efficiency tip: Fuse a Cobble Crusher (rock hammer) or a Boulder to any weapon — it hits multiple ore nodes per swing rather than one at a time, dramatically speeding up ore farming.
Method 5 — Sky Island Treasure Chests
Treasure chests across Sky Island ruins frequently contain Large Zonai Charges. This is passive collection during exploration rather than active farming, but systematic Sky Island clearing naturally builds your Large Charge stockpile.
Most chest-dense Sky Island regions:
- Akkala Sky Archipelago — numerous ruins with multiple chests per island
- Lanayru Sky Archipelago — multi-level ruins with chests on elevated platforms
- Necluda Sky Islands — compact island chains with concentrated chest clusters
Pair Sky Island exploration with Construct killing and Dispenser feeding for maximum resource efficiency per trip.
Method 6 — Tarrey Town Zonai Shop
After completing the Tarrey Town questline in Akkala, a Zonai materials shop opens selling Zonai Charges for Rupees. This is the most Rupee-inefficient method but useful as an immediate supplement if you're flush with currency. Start with "A Wife Wafted Away" quest at Tarrey Town to unlock this shop.
Upgrading the Energy Cell — Crystallized Charges
The permanent solution to Energy Cell limitations is upgrading its maximum capacity at Crystal Refineries. Each upgrade adds 1 segment to your Energy Cell maximum.
Cost per upgrade: 100 Crystallized Charges
| Upgrade Target | Cumulative Crystallized Charges | |---------------|-------------------------------| | 4 segments | 100 | | 5 segments | 200 | | 6 segments | 300 | | 7 segments | 400 | | Max capacity | 500+ |
Priority: Upgrade the Energy Cell before aggressive Charge farming — larger capacity means longer uninterrupted vehicle operation and less frequent mid-use recharging.
Recommended milestones:
- 5 segments — solid mid-game target; noticeable improvement for device use
- 7 segments — comfortable for complex multi-device vehicle builds
- Max capacity — long-term goal for dedicated Zonai builders
Efficient Per-Blood-Moon Farming Loop
Recommended Blood Moon Zonai Charge circuit:
- Northern Eldin Mine Garrison (Depths) — clear 14 Constructs for ~15 Charges
- Central Depths Crossroads Base — clear 10 Constructs for ~10 Charges
- Gerudo Depths Flux Construct III — defeat for 2 Large Charges guaranteed
- Faron Depths Flux Construct III — defeat for 2 Large Charges guaranteed
- Mine ore nodes during transit — convert at Central Depths Crystal Refinery
Estimated yield per loop: 35–45 Small Charges + 4–6 Large Charges. At endgame Energy Cell capacity, this loop keeps you in surplus indefinitely when cycled per Blood Moon.
Tips
- Blood Moon positioning: Before a Blood Moon triggers, position at a Flux Construct spawn. When midnight hits and the Construct respawns, defeat it immediately — zero travel time wasted.
- Large over Small: Always prioritize Large Zonai Charges. They refuel 3–4× more battery per inventory slot. Trade small Charges at Bargainer Statues for consumables if inventory is tight.
- Pre-flight prep: Before any complex multi-device vehicle flight, have 2–3 Large Charges accessible. More reliable than hoping small Charges accumulate quickly enough.
- Passive accumulation: Clear every Construct camp during normal exploration — 3 Construct Is average 1–2 free Zonai Charges. These drops compound significantly over a full play session.
