Zora Armor Guide — How to Get It, Upgrades & Underwater Combat
Zora Armor Guide — Swimming, Diving & the Zora Set
The Zora Armor set unlocks Link's ability to swim up waterfalls — one of the game's most unique vertical traversal mechanics. Combined with Sidon's water shield ability, Zora gear defines how you navigate the Lanayru region. This guide covers the full set, upgrade requirements, and swimming mechanics.
The Zora Armor Set — Overview
| Piece | How to Get | Base Defense | |-------|-----------|-------------| | Zora Armor (body) | Main story — Water Temple questline (Zora's Domain) | 3 | | Zora Helm (head) | Treasure chest at Toto Lake (underwater, northeast of Zora's Domain) | 3 | | Zora Greaves (legs) | Side quest: "Restoring the Zora Armor" — speak with Yona in Zora's Domain | 3 |
Full set base defense: 9 (low by endgame standards — upgrade early)
How to Get Each Piece
Zora Armor (Body)
Obtained during the main story quest "Sidon of the Zora" — the Water Temple questline. You must:
- Talk to King Dorephan at Zora's Domain
- Help clear the sludge blockage around Zora's Domain
- Find and speak with Sidon above the domain
- Complete the Water Temple dungeon
The Zora Armor is a story-mandatory reward — you cannot miss it if you complete the Lanayru main temple.
Zora Helm (Head)
Location: Toto Lake, northeast of Zora's Domain.
- Equip the Zora Armor body piece (required to dive into the lake)
- Swim to the center of Toto Lake
- Dive to the lake floor
- Find the glowing treasure chest at the bottom — the Zora Helm is inside
Diving mechanics: With the Zora Armor equipped, jump into deep water and press A to dive. Link can swim to any depth while the armor is worn.
Zora Greaves (Legs)
Quest: "Restoring the Zora Armor" — started by talking to Yona (Sidon's wife) in Zora's Domain after completing the Water Temple.
Yona asks for materials to restore the greaves:
- 5× Lizalfos Tail — drop from any Lizalfos type (electric, fire, ice, or standard)
- 5× Luminous Stone — mined from glowing ore deposits in Lanayru region caves
Bring the materials back to Yona and she crafts the Zora Greaves as a reward.
Swimming Mechanics
Base Swimming (No Armor)
- Link swims on the surface using A
- Cannot dive underwater without Zora Armor
- Cannot swim up waterfalls without Zora Armor
- Stamina is NOT consumed by surface swimming (unlike BotW)
With Zora Armor Equipped
Waterfall climbing:
- Approach any waterfall or water cascade flowing downward
- Jump into the falling water stream
- Link automatically swims upward at high speed using no stamina
- Works on any waterfall regardless of height
Diving:
- Press A in deep water to dive
- Swim to any depth
- Underwater areas include lake floors, submerged caves, and flooded ruins
- Stamina depletes while holding direction underwater (sprinting)
Set bonus at ★★ (upgraded): Swim Speed Up — Link moves faster both on the surface and underwater
Armor Upgrade Requirements
Upgrade at a Great Fairy Fountain (4 are active after the main story chain — see Armor Upgrades Guide).
Zora Armor (Body)
| Level | Materials | |-------|-----------| | ★ | 3× Opal, 3× Lizalfos Tail | | ★★ | 5× Opal, 5× Lizalfos Tail | | ★★★ | 5× Opal, 5× Lizalfos Horn | | ★★★★ | 10× Opal, 5× Lizalfos Talon, 3× Star Fragment |
Zora Helm (Head)
| Level | Materials | |-------|-----------| | ★ | 3× Opal, 3× Lizalfos Horn | | ★★ | 5× Opal, 5× Lizalfos Horn | | ★★★ | 5× Opal, 3× Lizalfos Talon | | ★★★★ | 10× Opal, 5× Lizalfos Talon, 3× Star Fragment |
Zora Greaves (Legs)
| Level | Materials | |-------|-----------| | ★ | 3× Opal, 3× Lizalfos Tail | | ★★ | 5× Opal, 5× Lizalfos Talon | | ★★★ | 5× Opal, 3× Lizalfos Horn | | ★★★★ | 10× Opal, 5× Lizalfos Talon, 3× Star Fragment |
Material sources:
- Opal — Lanayru region ore deposits, river caves, underwater nodes; also from Opals in treasure chests
- Lizalfos Tail — drop from any Lizalfos when defeated; East Necluda and Zora's Domain area spawn many
- Lizalfos Horn — drop from Lizalfos; rarer than tail, same spawn zones
- Lizalfos Talon — rare drop from Blue, Electric, or Black Lizalfos specifically
- Star Fragment — drop from shooting stars at night; Land at craters marked by light beam on the ground
Full Set Bonus
At ★★ (all 3 pieces upgraded to level 2): Swim Speed Up bonus activates.
This makes swimming dramatically faster — surfacing to catch a waterfall, pursuing the Water Temple's enemies, and crossing large lakes all become significantly more efficient.
At ★★★★ the bonus upgrades to Max Swim Speed — Link swims nearly twice the base speed.
Sidon Partnership — Water Shield
After completing the Water Temple, Sidon becomes a Sage companion. His ability:
Sidon's Water Shield:
- Press D-Pad + Y (Sage Ability) → Sidon creates a water barrier around Link
- The barrier absorbs incoming damage (blocks one hit completely)
- While active, charging an attack builds up a Sidon Water Burst — release for a powerful ranged water slash
- Also extinguishes fire on Link automatically when activated
Best uses for Sidon's ability:
- Before a Lynel charge — activate, absorb the charge damage, then burst-counter
- Against Igneo Talus — water burst deals bonus damage to fire enemies
- Zora Armor + Sidon's burst = natural synergy for Lanayru content
- Anti-Gloom: the water burst cleans Gloom buildup off Link's hearts
Lanayru Exploration with Zora Armor
The Zora Armor unlocks a significant chunk of Lanayru content:
Toto Lake — equip Zora Armor, dive to floor for the Helm chest + several ore nodes
Upland Zorana Byroad — waterfalls along the east cliffs; climb via waterfall to reach sky islands above
Zora's Domain underwater caves — multiple submerged alcoves with luminous stone deposits and korok seeds
Mount Lanayru waterfall routes — the mountain has cascades on the lower face; Zora Armor lets you climb them instead of scaling the icy rock face
Floating scales / The King's Scales quest — several underwater collectibles around Zora's Domain accessible only with diving capability
Quick Tips
- Get the Helm as soon as you finish the Water Temple — Toto Lake is 2 minutes northeast and the chest is simple to reach
- Farm Lizalfos Tails early for Yona's quest — keep tails from the Water Temple approach fights
- Luminous Stone farms well at the cave northeast of Zora's Domain (Zora Highlands Cave)
- Waterfall climbing is stamina-free — use it in place of climbing gear when wet rock faces would drain stamina
- Swap to Zora Armor only when swimming — for general combat, climbing gear or attack armor is superior. The Zora set's defense is modest until fully upgraded
- Star Fragments for ★★★★: These are rare (1 per in-game night on clear sky nights). Plan your ★★★★ upgrades carefully — needed for multiple sets, not just Zora
- Underwater ore — Opal and Luminous Stone nodes often spawn on riverbeds and lake floors. Dive in rivers near Zora's Domain for passive resource collection
