Ancient Hero's Aspect Guide — How to Get the Rare Outfit
Ancient Hero's Aspect Guide — The Rarest Outfit in TotK
The Ancient Hero's Aspect is one of the most exclusive rewards in Tears of the Kingdom — a full-body appearance transformation that replaces Link's model with a Zonai warrior aesthetic. It is earned by completing all 152 shrines across the Surface and Sky Islands. Unlike armor, the Ancient Hero's Aspect provides no stat bonuses — it is purely cosmetic and serves as a prestige item for completionists.
What Is the Ancient Hero's Aspect?
The Ancient Hero's Aspect is a full-body costume that transforms Link's visual appearance:
- Replaces Link's outfit with ancient Zonai warrior armor
- Green glowing patterns cover the body (matching the Zonai aesthetic)
- A unique headdress/helm completes the transformation
- The costume occupies all three armor slots (head, torso, legs) simultaneously
- No defense value — it provides zero armor rating
This is the game's way of recognizing and celebrating 100% shrine completion.
How to Unlock It
Requirement: Complete all 152 shrines in Tears of the Kingdom
The 152 shrines are distributed:
- ~120 Surface shrines (scattered across all regions of Hyrule)
- ~32 Sky Island shrines (on various sky island chains)
There are NO Depths shrines — the underground has Lightroots (not shrines).
Step-by-Step
- Locate and complete every shrine — obtaining the Light of Blessing from each
- After completing the 152nd shrine, a special notification appears
- Travel to the Goddess Statue at Lookout Landing (or any major Goddess Statue)
- Interact with the statue — a special scene plays
- The Ancient Hero's Aspect is added to your inventory as a Key Item
- Equip it from the inventory screen — it auto-applies to all three armor slots
Tracking Your Shrine Progress
In-game tracking:
- Open the map — completed shrines show as bright gold icons
- Uncompleted shrines show as darker icons
- Shrines you haven't discovered yet don't appear
Sky Island shrines tip: Many players miss sky shrine clusters. Check:
- Above each Skyview Tower (small sky island chains extend outward)
- Dragon Head Island (Faron sky area)
- Thunderhead Isles sky region (storm cloud area, south Faron)
- Rising Island Chain (Wind Temple path)
Depths tip: The Depths has Lightroots not shrines. Don't count Lightroots toward your 152.
Finding All 152 Shrines — Region Counts
Approximate shrine distribution:
| Region | Count | |--------|-------| | Central Hyrule | 17 | | Akkala | 12 | | Eldin | 10 | | Lanayru | 14 | | Necluda | 14 | | Faron | 12 | | Gerudo Desert | 12 | | Gerudo Highlands | 8 | | Hebra | 14 | | Tabantha | 10 | | Great Hyrule Forest | 8 | | Sky Islands (all) | 32 | | Total | ~152 |
Note: Exact counts vary by how sub-regions are grouped. The in-game map count is authoritative.
Most Commonly Missed Shrines
Players who struggle to find their last few shrines often miss:
Surface shrines:
- Shrine near Eventide Island (Faron coast — requires boat or sky approach)
- Shrine beneath the Akkala Citadel ruins (underground, enter via cave)
- Shrine deep in the Lanayru cave network
- Shrine on a platform in the middle of Lake Hylia (water access or sky launch)
- Shrine inside a cave behind the Zora's Domain waterfall
Sky Island shrines:
- Small sky platforms above Eldin — very high altitude, easy to overlook
- Dragon Head Island shrine — inside the dragon rock formation's mouth
- Thunderhead Isles shrine — requires breaching the storm (Thunder Helm or Lightning resistance)
- The chain of sky islands extending northeast from the Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower
- Small islands above Gerudo Highland peaks
Tips for finding missed shrines:
- Use the Sensor+ feature on your Purah Pad (set to Shrine) — it beeps when a shrine is nearby
- Activate all 15 Skyview Towers to reveal unexplored terrain where shrines might be hiding
- Check cave entrances — many shrines are inside caves only accessible from small openings
Is It Worth It?
Pros:
- The most exclusive visual reward in the game
- Incredible visual design — the Zonai aesthetic is stunning
- Achievement marker for true completionists
- Completing all 152 shrines also means significant Light of Blessing farming (lots of heart and stamina upgrades)
Cons:
- No defensive stats — you'll swap back to armor in combat
- Requires completing 152 shrines, which takes 30–50+ hours depending on guidance
- You cannot wear other headgear, chest armor, or leg armor while using it
Bottom line: The Ancient Hero's Aspect is a trophy item. If you enjoy shrine completion and want a permanent visual reward for your effort, it's an excellent goal. If you're focused on endgame combat, you'll rarely use it.
Tips
- Use the Sensor+ — Set the Sheikah Sensor to detect shrines. It beeps louder as you approach undiscovered shrines. Essential for finding the last 5–10 hidden shrines.
- Complete shrines as you explore — Don't attempt to "rush" all shrines at once. Naturally completing shrines during your playthrough gets you 120+ without dedicated farming.
- Sky Islands need dedicated trips — Allocate a specific session to sky shrine hunting. Build sky vehicles and work through each sky region systematically.
- The Light of Blessings are the real reward — Each shrine gives one Light of Blessing (4 = 1 heart container or stamina vessel). 152 shrines = 38 extra heart containers or stamina vessels worth of upgrades.
