What Defense Up (Tough) Food Does

Defense Up adds damage reduction to all incoming hits:

Defense Up vs. Hearty Food — Which Is Better?

  • Gets used up as you take hits, then requires re-eating

Defense Up Food (damage reduction):

  • Best for: Sustained fights against high-frequency attackers (Lynels, Silver Lynel, multi-phase bosses)
  • Reduces every hit for the full duration — no consumption
  • Less useful against attacks that one-shot you regardless

Best strategy: Stack both.

Eat a Hearty meal for the yellow heart buffer, then eat a Defense Up meal for the damage reduction. The combination means you take fewer damage per hit AND have more health to absorb hits with.
