Hearty Food Guide — Maximizing Extra Hearts
Hearty food is the most important cooking category in Tears of the Kingdom for survivability. Hearty meals restore all current hearts AND add temporary yellow hearts on top — this is the difference between surviving a Lynel or Gleeok hit and dying immediately. Understanding which hearty ingredients stack and how to cook them efficiently is essential for endgame play.
What Hearty Food Does
Hearty food provides two effects simultaneously:
- Full heart restoration — restores all current lost hearts to maximum
- Temporary yellow hearts (Extra Hearts) — adds yellow bonus hearts on top of your maximum
Yellow hearts take damage first before your red hearts. They do NOT regenerate — once gone, you need to eat again. But they essentially give you a health buffer of 1–10+ hearts above your maximum, turning difficult boss fights manageable.
Example: At 10 hearts, eating a meal with +5 Hearty puts you at 15 effective hearts (10 red + 5 yellow). A boss that deals 3 hearts per hit now takes 5 hits to kill you instead of 3.4.
Best Hearty Ingredients
Tier 1 — Maximum Yellow Hearts
Hearty Durian (5 yellow hearts per ingredient)
- The single most efficient hearty ingredient in the game
- 1 Hearty Durian = +5 yellow hearts per cook
- Where to find: Faron region jungles, south of Lake Hylia. The area around Lurelin Village and the Faron Grasslands has dense Hearty Durian trees. Also sold by Beedle at Lakeside Stable.
- Cooking cap: 5 ingredients max → 5 Hearty Durians = +25 yellow hearts (maximum possible)
Hearty Radish (4 yellow hearts per ingredient)
- Second-best hearty ingredient
- Where to find: Akkala Highlands meadows, east Necluda hillsides, and the area north of Zora's Domain
- 5 Hearty Radishes = +20 yellow hearts
Big Hearty Radish (4 yellow hearts per ingredient)
- Same potency as Hearty Radish
- Where to find: Specific cave locations and the Akkala region high plateaus
- Less common than regular Hearty Radish but same output
Tier 2 — Good Yellow Hearts
Hearty Bass (3 yellow hearts)
- Fish found in large rivers and lakes — Lake Hylia, the Zora's Domain waterways
- Efficient if you're near water anyway, but Hearty Durian is better
Hearty Salmon (3 yellow hearts)
- Found in mountain streams and cold water rivers (Lanayru, Akkala)
Hearty Lizard (3 yellow hearts)
- Rare spawn near warm rocks in Necluda and Faron regions
- Fast-moving — use arrows or crouch-walk to catch
Hearty Blueshell Snail (2 yellow hearts)
- Found on shorelines near Lurelin Village and southern coast
- Less efficient, use only when you don't have better ingredients
Best Hearty Recipes
Maximum Yellow Hearts — The Boss Fight Meal
5x Hearty Durian
- Yields: Full restore + +25 yellow hearts
- This is the absolute maximum. With 10 base hearts, you're at 35 total effective hearts
- Use for: Ganondorf, Lynel runs, Gleeok fights, anything that one-shots you
Balanced Hearty Meal
3x Hearty Durian + 2x Hearty Radish
- Yields: Full restore + +23 yellow hearts
- Nearly as effective as the max recipe, useful when you're short on Durians
Early Game Hearty
3x Hearty Radish + 2x Hearty Lizard
- Yields: Full restore + +18 yellow hearts
- Accessible in the first half of the game before reaching Faron for Hearty Durians
Budget Hearty
5x Hearty Bass or Hearty Salmon
- Yields: Full restore + +15 yellow hearts
- Fully farmable from rivers without exploration — good for early fights
Cooking Tips for Hearty Meals
The 5-ingredient rule: Always cook exactly 5 ingredients for maximum effect. Fewer than 5 ingredients works but wastes potential. Five Hearty Durians gives exactly 25 yellow hearts — the in-game maximum.
Single-ingredient trick: Cooking 1 Hearty Durian alone gives +5 yellow hearts + full restore. While less efficient than a 5-ingredient stack, it's useful when you want to preserve your supply.
Critical cook bonus: There is a small random chance of a "critical cook" that doubles the yellow hearts on a Hearty meal. This is not reliable but can occasionally give bonus effects. Having a fairy in your inventory increases critical cook odds (confirmed by community testing).
Do NOT mix hearty with other effects: Adding a non-hearty ingredient to a hearty recipe does NOT add a second buff — it can cancel the hearty effect entirely or produce a neutral dish. Always cook hearty ingredients together only.
Hearty Durian Farming
Hearty Durians are the best hearty ingredient. Efficient farming:
-
Faron Jungle route: Start at the Popla Foothills Skyview Tower. Fly south toward Lurelin Village. The jungle area around Lake Lurelin and south has 15–25 Hearty Durian trees within gliding distance.
-
Lakeside Stable purchase: Beedle at Lakeside Stable (east of Lake Hylia) sells Hearty Durians for 60 Rupees each. Buy his full stock (typically 3), rest for 3 in-game days, buy again.
-
Blood Moon reset: All foraged Durians on trees respawn after a Blood Moon. A Faron forest sweep post-Blood Moon can yield 30+ Hearty Durians in one run.
Tip: You can carry up to 999 of any ingredient. Stock 50–100 Hearty Durians and you'll have hearty food for the entire game without needing to restock constantly.
Hearty vs. Other Food Types
| Type | Effect | Best For | |------|--------|----------| | Hearty | Full restore + yellow hearts | Boss prep, dangerous areas, sustained fights | | Enduring | Yellow stamina (extra stamina wheel) | Long climbs, stamina-intensive activities | | Energizing | Restores stamina | Quick stamina refills mid-activity | | Mighty | Attack Up | Combat damage boost | | Tough | Defense Up | Tanking hits |
Hearty is the highest priority food type for boss fights. Extra hearts is a uniquely powerful defensive advantage — Attack Up food can't save you from a one-shot, but 25 yellow hearts can.
