Lanayru Depths Guide — Lightroots, Mining & Zora Underwater Paths
Lanayru Depths Guide
The Lanayru Depths occupy the underground zone beneath Lanayru and Zora's Domain — a vast, flooded Depths region with a unique characteristic: large underwater sections. Portions of the Lanayru Depths are submerged, requiring either Zora Armor (for swimming buffs) or creative navigation with Ultrahand devices. This makes it one of the most distinctive and challenging Depths zones in the game.
Entry Points
| Chasm | Surface Location | Notes | |-------|-----------------|-------| | Lanayru Wetlands Chasm | East of Zora's Domain | Main entry, closest to lightroot cluster | | Zora's Domain Depths entrance | Below Zora's Domain via underwater passage | Requires swimming ability | | Mount Lanayru Chasm | High altitude east Lanayru | Drops into eastern Depths |
Recommended approach: Enter via the Lanayru Wetlands Chasm — it drops you close to the first lightroot and avoids the flooded zones on initial entry.
Lightroots
Lanayru Depths has 8 lightroots across the flooded and dry sections:
| Lightroot | Zone | Flood Risk | |-----------|------|-----------| | Lanayru Depths L1 | Northwest dry zone | None | | Lanayru Depths L2 | Near Zora mirror point | Shallow water edges | | Lanayru Depths L3 | Central underwater | Fully submerged | | Lanayru Depths L4 | Southern dry corridor | None | | Lanayru Depths L5 | Eastern section | None | | Lanayru Depths L6 | Deep central lake | Fully submerged | | Lanayru Depths L7 | North Lanayru | Partial flooding | | Lanayru Depths L8 | Mount Lanayru mirror | None |
For submerged lightroots: Wear Zora Armor (top + any second piece) for swimming speed boost — you can reach the fully submerged lightroots by diving and swimming quickly. An Energizing Elixir beforehand restores stamina mid-swim.
Underwater Navigation
The flooded sections of the Lanayru Depths are unique in TotK. Unlike most Depths areas:
- Sidon's water shield works underwater — use it for combat against underwater enemies
- Brightbloom Seeds work underwater — throw them into the water ahead to illuminate paths
- Ultrahand works underwater — you can build a raft or floating platform and propel it through the water using fans or rockets
- Gloom does NOT affect underwater areas — the flooded zones are Gloom-free, making them safer than dry Depths despite the navigation challenge
Best swimming strategy: Activate Zora Armor + eat an Enduring Elixir for bonus stamina, then dive to submerged lightroots in one continuous swim. The entire submerged zone is navigable in ~3–4 minutes with Zora Armor.
Mining in Lanayru Depths
Lanayru Depths has mining outposts on the dry northern and eastern corridors. The flooded zones have ore deposits on the lake floor — accessible via swimming but slower to mine (weapon swings are normal speed underwater).
Dry zone outposts (efficient):
- North corridor near L1 lightroot — 15–20 Zonaite per run
- East section near L5 lightroot — 12–18 Zonaite per run
Underwater ore deposits (bonus):
- Lake floor near L3 lightroot — 8–12 Zonaite, rare Amber cluster
- Deep lake near L6 lightroot — 10–15 Zonaite
Total per-run estimate: 50–65 Zonaite for a complete Lanayru Depths run.
Notable Locations
Zora Mirror Point
The Lanayru Depths has a vertical passage that connects to Zora's Domain's underground — you can reach this via swimming upward through a narrow submerged shaft. This connects the Depths to the Zora Sidequest area for the Water Temple and is required for 100% map completion.
Ancient Zonai Waterworks
A large ancient Zonai structure in the central flooded zone appears to have been a water management facility. Several Construct Workers are still active here maintaining ancient machinery. Defeating the Captain Construct inside yields consistent Large Zonai Charge drops.
Gloom Spring (Southeastern Dry Zone)
An exposed Gloom spring in the southeastern dry corridor. Unlike flooded zones, this area has intense Gloom — wear Depths Armor and move through quickly. A large Poe cluster surrounds the spring.
Tips
- Zora Armor is essential for the flooded zones — without it, swimming in the Depths water is too slow for lightroot collection
- Sidon's ability creates water platforms useful for bridging gaps between flooded sections without full immersion
- Blood Moon timing — the underwater ore deposits reset on Blood Moon, making the Lanayru Depths the best source of surprise-location ore in post-Blood Moon runs
- Floating logs — several large logs float in the underwater sections; use Ultrahand to stack and ride them instead of swimming if stamina is limited
- Shrine mirror pairs — each Lanayru lightroot mirrors a Lanayru surface shrine; activate lightroots first to confirm which shrines you still need above
