Snowquill Set Guide — Cold Resistance & Rito Village Armor
Snowquill Set — Cold Weather Survival
The Snowquill armor set is the primary cold resistance gear in Tears of the Kingdom, sold at Rito Village in the Hebra region. Without cold resistance, traversing Hebra Mountain, the Tabantha Tundra, and snowy sky islands rapidly drains Link's hearts from the ambient freeze. The Snowquill set — or at minimum one piece — is mandatory before exploring these areas.
Where to Buy the Snowquill Set
Location: Rito Village, Brazen Beak Armor Shop
| Item | Price | |------|-------| | Snowquill Headdress | 600 Rupees | | Snowquill Tunic | 500 Rupees | | Snowquill Trousers | 450 Rupees | | Full Set | 1,550 Rupees |
Rito Village is reached via Tabantha Bridge Stable → north through Tabantha Frontier → up the large pillar (follow the winding road). The armor shop is near the top of the village.
Cold Resistance Mechanics
| Cold Level | Area Examples | Resistance Needed | |-----------|---------------|------------------| | Cold Lv1 | Tabantha Frontier, Hebra foothills, night in Akkala | 1 piece Snowquill (or Spicy Elixir) | | Cold Lv2 | Hebra Mountain summit, Rito Village altitude, snowy sky islands | Full Snowquill set OR 2 pieces + elixir | | Extreme Cold | Blizzard areas near Mount Lanayru peak | Full set + elixir recommended |
Key rule: Each piece of Snowquill provides 1 level of Cold Resistance. 3 pieces = 3 levels. For extreme cold (Cold Lv2 areas), you need 2+ pieces or one piece + a Spicy Elixir.
Stats
| Piece | Defense | Cold Resist | |-------|---------|------------| | Snowquill Headdress | 3 | 1 | | Snowquill Tunic | 3 | 1 | | Snowquill Trousers | 3 | 1 | | Full Set (3 pieces) | 9 | 3 + Unfreeze |
Full set bonus: In addition to Cold Resistance 3, the complete Snowquill set grants Unfreeze — you cannot be frozen solid by Ice enemies (Ice Lizalfos spit, blue Chuchu jelly explosions, Naydra's ice breath). This is enormously valuable for the Wind Temple questline and the Rito main quest.
Upgrading the Snowquill Set
| Level | Materials (per piece) | Defense | |-------|----------------------|---------| | ★ | Warm Safflina ×3, Amber ×3 | 5 per piece | | ★★ | Ice Lizalfos Horn ×3, Ruby ×3 | 8 per piece | | ★★★ | Ice Lizalfos Tail ×3, Ruby ×5 | 12 per piece | | ★★★★ | Silver Ice Lizalfos Horn ×3, Diamond ×3 | 20 per piece |
Where to farm upgrade materials:
- Warm Safflina: Grows on cliffs and hillsides in the Tabantha/Hebra area; also purchasable from Beedle at Rito stable
- Ice Lizalfos Horn/Tail: Ice Lizalfos spawn throughout Hebra and are guaranteed to drop these
- Ruby: Found in ore deposits in cold regions; also reward from completing Rito-area shrines
Alternatives to Snowquill
If you haven't reached Rito Village yet:
| Method | Cold Resistance | Duration | |--------|----------------|---------| | Spicy Elixir | Cold 1 | 5–15 min (depends on potency ingredients) | | Spicy Pepper Steak | Cold 1 | 3–7 min | | Sunshroom + ingredients | Cold 1 | Brief | | Warm Doublet | Cold 1 | Permanent (old man's quest reward, but may not exist in TotK) |
Spicy Elixirs (Summerwing Butterfly or Warm Darner + monster part) are the most reliable early substitute. Stock 8–10 before attempting Rito Village if you're going there early.
Snowquill for the Wind Temple
The Wind Temple is the first dungeon in the recommended playthrough order. It's located on a sky island above Hebra — extremely cold at altitude.
Minimum for Wind Temple: Full Snowquill set (Cold Resist 3 + Unfreeze)
Why Unfreeze matters here: Colgera (Wind Temple boss) creates ice pillars and freeze attacks. The Unfreeze set bonus from the full Snowquill set eliminates one of Colgera's most dangerous attack patterns.
Tips
- Buy at least the Tunic first if Rupees are tight — 500R for Cold Resist 1 handles most Hebra surface areas
- Full set for flight — gliding at Rito Village altitude (the village itself is in a cold zone) requires 2+ pieces to avoid passive freeze damage
- Upgrade priority: ★★ — the ★★ upgrade significantly improves defense for relatively cheap Ruby/Ice Lizalfos materials, and it's the sweet spot before you need Diamond for ★★★★
- Dye to Rito blue — the Snowquill set looks excellent in the default white/gold coloring, but Hateno Dye Shop lets you customize it
