Stealth Guide — Armor, Techniques & Sneaking Past Enemies
Stealth Guide — Moving Unseen Through Hyrule
TotK's stealth system lets Link sneak past enemies, steal items from sleeping targets, and deliver devastating Sneakstrike attacks that deal massive damage. This guide covers how stealth works, the Stealth Armor set, and techniques for every situation.
How Stealth Works
Detection zones: Each enemy has a cone of vision and a hearing radius. Walk within either, and they notice Link.
Stealth factors:
- Movement speed: Walking is quieter than sprinting; crouching (hold ZL while still) is quietest
- Equipment: Stealth Armor reduces sound signature
- Environment: Grass, bushes, tall vegetation break line of sight
- Elevation: Enemies looking down rarely look up — high positions are safer
- Wind direction: Minimal effect in TotK (unlike some games — enemies don't "smell" you)
Alert states:
- Unaware (yellow eyes): Normal enemy patrol
- Suspicious (orange): Heard/saw something — investigating
- Alert (red): Full combat mode — all nearby enemies join the fight
Breaking suspicion: If enemies become suspicious but don't find Link, they return to normal after 15-30 seconds. Crouch and stay still during the investigation window.
Sneakstrike — The Stealth Attack
Sneakstrike is a backstab attack that deals dramatically increased damage:
- Approach an unaware enemy from behind while crouching
- The Sneakstrike prompt appears → press A → Link performs a spinning downward strike
- Damage multiplier: 8× normal weapon damage
8× multiplier significance:
- A basic weapon dealing 10 damage hits for 80 on a Sneakstrike
- A Fused sword with 30 attack hits for 240 on a Sneakstrike
- Strong enemies that take 15+ hits normally can be Sneakstruck for 100+ damage — major progress
Sneakstrike on sleeping enemies: Sleeping Bokoblins and Hinox are prime Sneakstrike targets. Sneak to their position while they sleep → land a Sneakstrike → often kill or critically wound them before combat even starts.
Stealth Armor Set
Stealth Armor reduces sound signature dramatically:
| Piece | Location | Effect | |-------|---------|--------| | Stealth Mask (Tights) | Kakariko Village — purchase from shop | Stealth Up | | Stealth Chest Guard | Kakariko Village — purchase | Stealth Up | | Stealth Tights | Kakariko Village — purchase | Stealth Up |
Set bonus at ★★: Night Speed Up — movement speed increases at night, making nighttime stealth exploration dramatically faster.
Shop location: The Armor Shop in Kakariko Village sells all 3 pieces. Combined price: approximately 2,300 rupees.
When to use:
- Approaching sleeping enemies for Sneakstrikes
- Exploring enemy camps without being detected
- Stealth-collecting Hinox necklace weapons
- Yiga Clan hideout infiltration
Techniques
Grass and Vegetation Hiding
Crouching in tall grass makes Link nearly invisible. Enemies walking patterns often avoid tall grass areas — use this to set up Sneakstrikes.
Grass approach:
- Identify target
- Locate nearby tall grass between your position and the target
- Crouch → move through grass → emerge behind target → Sneakstrike
High Ground Approach
Enemies look forward along their patrol paths, rarely upward. Flanking from elevated positions:
- Climb to a higher position than the enemy camp
- Walk along the high ground (stay behind the visual horizon from enemies)
- Paraglide or drop silently behind a target
Distracting Enemies
Throw an item into an enemy's detection zone → they investigate the sound → their back is now turned → approach from the opposite side for a Sneakstrike.
Best throwable distractors: Rocks, small materials — anything that makes noise on impact.
Bomb Arrow Approach
If stealth breaks:
- Fire Bomb Arrows into clusters before breaking stealth entirely
- Damaged enemies are easier to finish quickly
- The chaos from explosions may give you a brief Sneakstrike window on survivors
Yiga Clan Stealth Scenarios
Yiga Clan Hideout: Requires stealth to get through undetected. Yiga Clan enemies eat Mighty Bananas — throw bananas to distract them.
Yiga Clan road encounters: Random Yiga Clan disguised as travelers appear and attack. They can't be pre-emptively sneak-attacked (they detect Link as they initiate conversation). Once combat starts, treat normally.
Yiga Clan dungeon section: Requires moving through a barn-like interior without touching Yiga patrol routes. Crouch + Stealth Armor makes this manageable.
Stealth for Specific Scenarios
Horse Taming
Wild horses flee when they sense Link. Stealth is essential:
- Approach upwind (or from their blindspot — from behind)
- Crouch → Stealth Armor helps
- Get within mounting range without spooking them → mount (A) → soothe repeatedly
Rare Creature Photography
Some creatures (shy fish, specific insects) flee before you can photograph them:
- Approach crouching
- Stealth Armor reduces detection
- Slow movement, no sprint
Stealing Hinox Necklace Weapons
Hinox wears a necklace of weapons you can take while it sleeps:
- Equip Stealth Armor
- Approach sleeping Hinox (large sleeping giant)
- Ultrahand the necklace weapons while it sleeps
- Collect without waking it
Quick Tips
- 8× Sneakstrike changes camps — every Bokoblin camp should start with a Sneakstrike on the captain. This eliminates the strongest enemy before the camp is alerted. Then the alert fight is much easier.
- Stealth Armor from Kakariko early — if you have 2,300 rupees in early game, the Stealth set is one of the best investments. Night Speed Up at ★★ makes it the best exploration armor for nighttime sessions.
- Grass camping works — if you're overwhelmed in a camp, duck into nearby tall grass and crouch. Enemies lose you faster than expected. Reorganize and re-engage with fresh Sneakstrikes.
- Throw rocks as distractors — any throwable item works. Pick up loose rocks before sneaking into a camp. Throw one behind an enemy → they investigate → you Sneakstrike from the other side.
- Sleeping Hinox = free weapons — always check Hinox with Ultrahand before waking them. The necklace weapons are valuable and risk-free to collect while they sleep.
