Thunder Gleeok Guide — All Locations, Strategy & Drops in TotK
Thunder Gleeok Guide — Strategy & All Locations
Thunder Gleeoks are the electric variant of Hyrule's apex dragon-bosses. They coat the arena in lightning strikes, call down thunderbolts from the sky, and are almost impossible to survive without Lightning Resistance. This guide covers every Thunder Gleeok location and how to beat them.
Thunder Gleeok Overview
| Stat | Value | |------|-------| | HP | Very High | | Phase 1 | Grounded — electric breath and lightning balls | | Phase 2 | Airborne — aerial lightning storm, ground electrification | | Element | Lightning — electric attacks, shock damage | | Key drop | Gleeok Thunder Horn (armor upgrade material) |
Danger level: Elite. Without Lightning Resistance, Phase 2 Thunder Gleeok will kill most players in seconds. The lightning bolts ignore stamina, timing, and positioning — they target you directly.
Required Preparation
Lightning Resistance (Essential)
Thunder Gleeoks call targeted lightning strikes. Without protection:
- Phase 2 lightning volley deals massive damage with zero warning
- Standing in electrified ground drains HP rapidly
Protection options:
- Thunder Helm (single-piece full protection) — from Gerudo Resistance questline
- Rubber Armor set (all three pieces) — purchased in various locations, provides full Unshockable at 2-star
- Electro Elixir — Thunderwing Butterfly + monster part; Level 2 lasts 8 minutes
Best choice: Thunder Helm for flexibility (frees two armor slots), Rubber Armor full set for damage output.
Best Weapons
- Ice Arrows / Sapphire fused arrows — Ice counters electric, most effective element
- High-attack bow — Savage Lynel Bow (5-shot) hits all three heads per volley
- Royal Claymore or Royal Halberd — for ground phase melee when stunned
- Shock-immune shields — don't use metal shields; they attract lightning
Avoid
- Metal weapons on your back — during Phase 2, stored metal weapons can attract lightning (equip non-metal or store in inventory)
- Standing still — Thunder Gleeok targets static positions
- Fire arrows — no effect (not weak to fire)
Thunder Gleeok Locations
Location 1 — Hyrule Castle Throne Room (Central Hyrule)
Coordinates: 0170, 0960, 0118 Access: Enter Hyrule Castle via the underground passages or upper walls
The most famous Thunder Gleeok guards the inner sanctum of Hyrule Castle — this is a significant encounter in the main questline and lore. It's also the most powerful version encountered before the final boss.
Tips for Castle Thunder Gleeok:
- The throne room arena has limited open space — Phase 2 aerial movement is restricted by walls and ceiling
- Use the elevated ledges and side platforms for bow sniping
- If overwhelmed, fall back through the throne room doorway to break line of sight temporarily
Location 2 — Akkala Citadel Ruins (Akkala)
Coordinates: 3783, 2300, 0150 Access: Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower → fly east toward the Akkala coast
A Thunder Gleeok patrols the Akkala Citadel, one of the large ruined fortresses in the northeast. This is an open outdoor arena with good paraglider access.
Tips for Akkala Citadel:
- The citadel battlements provide elevated firing positions
- East-facing open cliffs give clean Phase 2 approach angles
- Wind conditions here can aid or hinder paraglider Phase 2 flight
Location 3 — North Hyrule Plains / Tabantha Area
Coordinates: Varies — roaming in northwest Hyrule Field area Access: Hyrule Ridge Skyview Tower → fly north or northwest
This Thunder Gleeok roams the northern plains area, sometimes near the road between Hyrule Castle and Rito Village. It's a major open-field encounter.
Tips for Plains Thunder Gleeok:
- No terrain cover — Phase 2 is fully exposed
- Use the flat ground for maximum dodging room
- Updrafts from the Gleeok's own lightning can help reach it during Phase 2
Location 4 — Gerudo Highlands Bridge
Coordinates: -3460, -0290, 0490 Access: Gerudo Highland Skyview Tower → fly east on the highland road
A Thunder Gleeok guards a major bridge in the Gerudo Highlands — this is a route encounter for players exploring southwest Hyrule.
Tips for Gerudo Highlands:
- Bridge terrain limits lateral movement — Phase 2 is dangerous here
- The plateau height provides natural elevation for Phase 2 paraglider approach
- Ice climate nearby — contrast from the electrical danger
Location 5 — Depths Versions
Every surface Thunder Gleeok has a Depths mirror beneath it. The Depths versions appear in large underground chambers with significantly reduced visibility (Gloom environment).
- Depths Thunder Gleeok: Use the same strategy but bring Sundelion dishes to cure Gloom damage
- Brightbloom Seeds for visibility
- Same drops — useful for Gleeok Thunder Horn farming after Blood Moon
Combat Strategy
Phase 1 — Ground Phase
Three heads, each targeting independently:
- Left head: Horizontal electric beam — dodge sideways, jump over
- Right head: Tracking lightning ball projectile — sprint diagonally
- Center head: Direct charge and bite — backflip → Flurry Rush
Hitting head gems:
- Each head has a glowing blue/white gem
- One arrow hit staggers a head briefly
- Ice arrows deal bonus damage and freeze the head slightly
- Multi-shot bow hits multiple heads with one arrow pull — efficient
- Time slow (draw bow while jumping) for headshot precision
Ground attacks:
- Body slam: Shadow appears below target — sprint immediately
- Tail sweep: Circular arc — jump + paraglide over it
- Electrified ground: Blue rings appear — avoid standing in them
When all three heads are stunned simultaneously, the Gleeok collapses — rush in for melee combo on the gem nodes.
Phase 2 — Aerial Lightning Storm
Triggered at ~50% HP or after repeated staggers:
- Gleeok launches skyward
- Phase 2 attack pattern:
- Lightning bolt barrages targeting player position directly
- Periodic "charge shot" — visible before release, dodge sideways
- Electric field sweeps across the ground from above
- Ground electrification makes standing still lethal
Reaching the Gleeok in Phase 2:
- Paraglide from high terrain — climb the nearest rock/wall and glide toward it
- Recall a launched object — Gleeok sometimes throws large rocks/debris that can be Recalled upward
- Updraft riding — jump into air disturbance from the Gleeok's electric discharge and catch thermal
- Skyview Tower relaunch — if nearby, teleport and launch skyward
In the air:
- Draw bow, enter slow-time mode (zoom)
- Hit each of the three head gems once each
- Third hit on all three heads causes crash-down
- Land on Gleeok's back directly and melee the gem nodes
Lightning storm survival:
- Never stop moving horizontally
- Bolt interval: ~2 seconds between strikes
- Lightning tracks your last position — change direction constantly
- Stay out of range of the charged ground attack (large ring appears before it lands)
Thunder Gleeok Drops
| Drop | Rarity | Use | |------|--------|-----| | Gleeok Thunder Horn | Uncommon | Armor upgrade for Rubber Armor (4-star) | | Gleeok Wing | Common | Fuse to arrows — electric attribute | | Gleeok Guts | Rare | Elixir ingredient, sells for 80R | | Topaz | Common (sometimes) | Sell (180R) or fuse for electric arrows |
Gleeok Thunder Horn uses:
- Required for Rubber Armor 4-star upgrade (Unshockable set bonus)
- Fuse to weapons: creates electric melee attacks
- Can sell for rupees if you have surplus
Thunder Helm Synergy
If you already have the Thunder Helm, the Thunder Gleeok fight becomes much more manageable:
- Zero lightning damage from Phase 2 strikes
- Can stand still to aim without panic dodging
- Frees up mental bandwidth to focus on Phase 2 platform approach
