Zora Armor Advanced Guide — Waterfall Climbing & Underwater Mastery

The Zora Armor set transforms TotK's water gameplay — enabling waterfall climbing, faster swimming, and critical paths in the Water Temple. This guide covers the full set's advanced mechanics beyond the basics, including underwater combat, optimal upgrade path, and every water-body secret unlocked by the set.

Zora Armor Full Set

| Piece | Location | Stat | |-------|----------|------| | Zora Armor (chest) | Main quest — given by King Dorephan | Swim Dash | | Zora Helm (head) | Toto Lake — hidden underwater chest | Swim Dash Up | | Zora Greaves (legs) | Yona's quest — complete the Zora Domain sidequest | Swim Dash Up |

Set bonus at two stars (★★): Swim Dash Stamina Up — charged swim dashes drain less stamina, enabling near-infinite waterfall climbing with good stamina management.

Waterfall Climbing — Full Mechanic

How it works:

  1. Equip the Zora Armor chest piece (minimum requirement)
  2. Swim into the base of any waterfall
  3. The Zora Armor channels the water current → Link begins swimming UPWARD
  4. Hold the swim button to maintain ascent
  5. Optional: press dash (ZL + B) for a burst of upward speed (costs stamina)

Stamina management:

  • Normal upward waterfall swimming drains stamina at 1× rate
  • Dash during waterfall swim drains at 3× rate
  • With full set ★★: Dash drains at ~1.5× — sustainable for most waterfalls

Any waterfall: The mechanic works on any downward water flow — not just natural waterfalls. Man-made water channels (Zora's Domain pipes, Lanayru water systems) also work.

Waterfalls Worth Climbing

Zora's Domain

  • Multiple internal waterfall paths unlock shortcuts to upper areas
  • Zora Domain elevated platforms: Accessible only via waterfall swimming — contain Korok Seeds and ore deposits

Floria Waterfall (Faron)

  • The largest waterfall in Faron region
  • Climbing it leads to a clifftop area with a Korok Seed and a chest
  • A cave behind the falls is accessible after climbing (go into the waterfall midway up → enter the cave mouth)

Lanayru River Waterfalls

  • Several cataracts along the river between Kakariko and Zora's Domain
  • Each harbors at least one Korok Seed accessible via waterfall approach
  • Spring of Wisdom shortcut: Upper Lanayru has a waterfall path that shortcuts the Mount Lanayru approach

Death Mountain (Limited)

  • A lava waterfall exists inside Death Mountain — NOT swimmable (lava, not water, obviously)
  • However, the water runoff channels around the volcano's base work with Zora Armor

Swim Speed — Practical Comparison

Without Zora Armor: Standard swimming speed — slow, high stamina drain With Zora Armor (1 piece): Swim dash enabled — moderate speed burst Full set (3 pieces) ★★: Sustained swim dashes — fastest swimming in game

Horizontal swimming tip: The Zora Armor swim dash works horizontally too — crossing Lake Hylia or Zora's Domain at full dash speed is dramatically faster than standard swimming. Think of it as an underwater sprint.

Underwater Combat

Underwater combat is limited in TotK — Link's weapon use is restricted while swimming. However:

Zora Armor + underwater secrets:

  • Some lake floors and underwater caves are accessible only by diving (hold ZL + ZR + forward to dive deep)
  • Underwater chests visible from the surface can be retrieved by diving
  • Zora's Domain underwater: Several chambers are exclusively underwater — no surface route exists

What you can do underwater:

  • Swim toward enemies (Likes/Lizalfos in water) and exit water to fight
  • Use arrows (short range — water resistance)
  • Throw Bomb Flowers (they detonate on water surface, not underwater)

Upgrade Materials

Great Fairy required.

| Level | Materials per piece | |-------|-------------------| | ★ | 3× Lizalfos Scale, 3× Opal | | ★★ | 3× Lizalfos Tail, 5× Opal | | ★★★ | 4× Lizalfos Horn, 4× Luminous Stone | | ★★★★ | 4× Lynel Scale (Lizalfos variant), 4× Diamond |

Opal is the limiting material — needed in significant quantities for ★ and ★★. The fastest Opal farming method:

  • Mine riverbed deposits (Opal commonly in wet stone near rivers)
  • Defeat Wizzrobes and Lizalfos in Lanayru region (Opal drops)
  • Sell threshold: keep 50+ Opal for upgrades before selling surplus

The Toto Lake Helm — Getting It

The Zora Helm is the hardest piece to find:

  1. Travel to Toto Lake (northeast of Zora's Domain — small lake up the cliffs)
  2. The lake is partially frozen on the surface
  3. Break the ice: Bomb the ice layer on the lake surface (or fire arrows at it)
  4. Dive into the revealed water
  5. The Zora Helm chest is at the bottom of the lake — dive straight down
  6. Retrieve the chest

Getting there: The path to Toto Lake from Zora's Domain involves climbing the cliffside northeast. Waterfall swim up the falls on the east side of Zora's Domain.

Water Temple Preparation

Before the Water Temple (Lanayru region):

  • Equip at least the Zora Armor chest piece
  • The temple's water mechanics depend heavily on swimming speed
  • Several puzzles require waterfall climbing to access upper levels
  • Sidon's Water Shield pairs perfectly with Zora Armor — you're swimming constantly and Sidon provides defensive coverage

Quick Tips

  • Opal farming for upgrades — farm Opal specifically in Lanayru riverbed deposits before upgrading. The set needs a lot of Opal.
  • Waterfall shortcuts everywhere — TotK is designed with many waterfall shortcuts you won't notice unless actively looking for water flow from above. Any downward water = potential upward path.
  • Toto Lake ice breaking — bomb the ice surface first. Many players dive and can't find the chest because they miss the ice layer hiding the full lake depth.
  • Set bonus unlocks sustainability — without ★★, waterfall dashing is stamina-intensive. The ★★ set bonus makes it comfortable. Prioritize getting all 3 pieces to ★★.
  • Zora Armor + Sidon in Water Temple — these two mechanics were designed to complement each other. Swim past obstacles, Sidon defends against attack, swim some more. The Water Temple flows naturally with both active.
