Description

A massive sand-swimming predator of the Gerudo Desert. Detects vibrations in the sand and devours anything that moves. Lurks beneath the dunes in four fixed territories across the desert and must be lured to the surface using explosive bait — standing on rocks keeps Link safe while setting up each Bomb Flower lure. Dropping directly onto its surfaced body from a paraglide delivers a free flurry of melee hits before it re-submerges. One of the most mechanically unique boss encounters in the game.

Weakness

Molduga's primary weakness is Bomb bait — surfaces and is stunned by explosions on sand.

How to Beat Molduga

1. Moldugas are massive sand-swimming predators found exclusively in the Gerudo Desert.
2. They detect prey through vibrations in the sand and are one of the more unique boss encounters due to the terrain-specific mechanics.
3. Preparation: Bring Bomb Flowers (essential), a strong melee weapon, and heat-resistant armor or food for the desert environment.
4. Identify nearby rock formations before engaging — rocks are your safe zones.
5. Phase 1 — Bait and Bomb: The core Molduga strategy is elegantly simple.
6. Stand on a rock or any solid surface (the Molduga cannot detect you on rock).
7. While on the rock, throw a Bomb Flower onto the sand.
8. The vibration from the Bomb Flower landing attracts the Molduga, which swims toward it and leaps out of the sand to swallow it.
9. Detonate the Bomb Flower as the Molduga surfaces — the explosion stuns it mid-air, causing it to crash onto the sand stunned and helpless.
10. Rush off your rock to the stunned Molduga and attack with your strongest melee weapon.
11. You get roughly six to eight seconds of free damage before it burrows back into the sand.
12. Return to your rock and repeat.
13. Phase 2 — Sand Hazards: The Molduga has several attacks to be aware of.
14. While underground, it creates sand disturbances that show its position — it can launch sand projectiles that erupt from below.
15. If you are standing on sand (not on a rock), it will swim directly to you and lunge from beneath, dealing massive damage.
16. It occasionally circles your position before lunging, giving you a brief warning via the sand trails.
17. If you fall off your rock onto sand, sprint back to solid ground immediately.
18. Do not try to fight on sand.
19. Phase 3 — Low HP Aggression: Below one-third health, the Molduga becomes more active and harder to bait.
20. It may ignore Bomb Flower vibrations temporarily or swim past them.
21. When this happens, create vibrations by running briefly on sand near a rock, then quickly jumping back to safety.
22. The Molduga will lunge at where you were standing.
23. While it is exposed on the surface after a missed lunge, shoot it with arrows to deal chip damage and draw it toward your Bomb Flowers.
24. Patience is the key — the Molduga cannot hurt you on a rock.
25. Take your time, land your Bomb Flower baits, and punish every stun window.
26. Four to five cycles finish most Moldugas.
27. Each kill drops a treasure chest in addition to monster parts.
