Paya's Woodcutter's Axe

Speak with Paya at Kakariko Village

Find Paya at the Sheikah elder's house near the top of Kakariko's terraced hill. She is flustered — she was sorting Impa's personal effects and discovered that the ceremonial woodcutter's axe is missing. It was last seen in the storage barn near the village gate, but the barn was opened and reorganized after the Upheaval and the axe is now nowhere inside. She asks Link to search the surrounding area.

Search the Forest Southeast of Kakariko

Head southeast from Kakariko's gate into the forested hillside. The axe was accidentally carried out with a bundle of logs during the post-Upheaval cleanup — someone set it down while stacking wood and forgot to retrieve it. Look for a glint of metal near a woodpile beside the path. The axe has a distinctive Sheikah eye symbol carved into the handle head, making it visually distinct from ordinary axes.

Check the Riverside Cave

If the forest path yields nothing, check the small cave along the Kakariko riverside to the west. A traveler sheltering there during the Upheaval may have taken the axe thinking it was abandoned. Inside the cave, a chest near the back wall contains the woodcutter's axe, left by a departing traveler who did not realize its significance. Retrieve the axe from the chest.

Return the Axe to Paya

Bring the ceremonial axe back to Paya at the elder's house. Relieved, she tells the story of Impa personally felling the trees used to rebuild Kakariko after the Great Calamity 100 years ago — the axe is a symbol of Sheikah resilience and rebuilding. As thanks, she opens the family's storage and presents Link with a Sheikah Shield (high durability, Sheikah crest design) that has been kept as an heirloom.
